Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan [Blu-ray]

Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan [Blu-ray] Review

While I might quibble with the subtitle ("The Rise of Genghis Khan") since his rise to the title takes place *after* this film, it is still a glorious film about an almost complete unknown. Though Genghis Khan has been an archetype of the conqueror on horseback since his armies overran Asia and parts of Europe 800 years ago, most people know nothing about him other than, maybe, he was "Mongolian" and has scary pictures in various histories. This film is based on several historical works that try to tease out a personal history, based on Mongol oral traditions. It is focused almost entirely on the early life of Temujin (Genghis Khan's real name), and you frequently wish the movie was longer and filled in more gaps. Beautifully filmed, it is also a great introduction to the beauties of Mongolia, which should come as a shock to those who think "Mongolia" means "desolate waste."

Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan [Blu-ray] Feature

  • History knows him as Genghis Khan, but before he became a warlord, he was simply a man named Temudgin. Exiled into slavery as a boy and forced into a life of struggle after his father is killed by a rival clan, the greatest military mastermind of all time survived on the strength of a single dream: to unite his people into the largest empire the world has ever known. Asano Tadanobu portrays Temudg

Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan [Blu-ray] Specifications

First entry in a proposed trilogy, Mongol vividly captures the beauty and brutality of ancient Mongolia. Beginning in 1172 and ending in 1206, Sergei Bodrov's Oscar-nominated epic presents future conqueror Ghengis Khan as more lover--and fighter--than diplomat. Against his father Esegui's wishes, nine-year-old Temudjin chooses his own bride, whom he marries in the years to come. Hopes for the future, however, turns to thoughts of vengeance when the clan forsakes the boy upon Esegui's death. While Temudjin (now played by Zatoichi's Tadanobu Asano, a quietly commanding presence) makes his way in a cruel world, turncoat Targutai (Amadu Mamadakov) becomes the new khan. When an opposing clan kidnaps Temudjin's wife, Börte (Khulan Chuluun), he eventually retrieves her, but betrays blood brother Jamukha (Sun Honglei, Seven Swords) in the process, leading to further enslavement and more Kurasawa-style slicing and dicing. Throughout his travails, Temudjin comes to believe that Mongols must unite to share the same language, culture, and set of values. Sustained by his faith in the god Tengri and the devotion of Börte, Temudjin sets out to wrest control of Mongolia from Jamukha and his women and children-killing hordes. Except for an over-reliance on CGI during the climactic battle sequence, Mongol equals the scope and grandeur of historical predecessors, like Braveheart and Hero. If much of the cast is Chinese and Japanese, Bodrov, who directed Prisoner of the Mountains, conjures up authenticity through detailed costumes, Mongolian dialogue, and remote Central Asian locations. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Aeon Flux [Blu-ray]

Aeon Flux [Blu-ray] Review

I love Sci-Fi movies and I also have a deep appreciation for women. Many movies that feature female heroines portray them in a way that de-feminizes, particularly some Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Adventure films. This is one of many reasons why the movie "Tomb Raider" is not a part of my collection.

Please do not be mistaken! Their is a huge difference between sexuality and femininity. The heroine that exudes FEMININITY will by default exude SEXUALITY. However, many movie heroines are very sexy to look at but are not very feminine in their character portrayal.

I am a man that thinks women are neat, with all their complexities. I appreciate their FEMININITY and their STRENGTH. This movie was very well directed. In that, it accentuated a strong heroine who was very comfortable with being a woman. It appealed to my deep love of Sci-Fi films and my appreciation for the "complete woman."

Aeon Flux [Blu-ray] Overview

Like the animated series it's based on, Aeon Flux is the kind of sci-fi that's best appreciated by the MTV generation. It's a serious attempt at stylized, futuristic action/adventure (the title character, played by Charlize Theron, is essentially a female James Bond for the cyberpunk era) and taken for what it is, it's not all that bad. The action takes place in the year 2415, four centuries after a virus nearly decimated the human race, leaving only five million survivors in a utopian city called Bregna. Aeon belongs to the Monicans, a secret rebel resistance force that is struggling to destroy the Goodchild regime led by its namesake, Trevor Goodchild (Martin Csokas), the ruler of Bregna and a descendant of the man who found a cure for the deadly virus. As instructed by the Handler (Frances McDormand, gamely playing along in ridiculous sci-fi regalia), Aeon is assigned to assassinate Goodchild, but there are deeper secrets to be discovered, and conspiracies to be foiled. This leads director Karyn Kusama (who fared much better with her debut feature Girlfight) to indulge in all sorts of routine action and fast-paced gunplay, but the elusive pleasures of Aeon Flux are mostly found in the sleek athleticism of Theron and costar Sophie Okonedo (as a fellow Monican), who commit themselves 100% to roles that are dramatically flat yet physically dynamic. Other highlights include Aeon's high-tech gadgetry (including an eyeball that doubles as a microsocope) and the amusing sight of Pete Postlethwaite in a costume resembling a construction-site disposal tube, but Flux fans may wonder what happened to the surreal, chromium sheen future that gave the MTV series its visionary appeal. As a live-action feature, Aeon Flux is a miscalculated exercise in cheesy style and dour tone, but it's entertaining enough to earn a small cadre of admirers. --Jeff Shannon

Across the Universe [Blu-ray]

Across the Universe [Blu-ray] Review

First of all I'm not going to break this movie down to what it means, it's plot, it's historical value, or whatever. The thing is that it is a fun movie to watch. I truly liked the visuals, and the music scenes. I thought it was great on how the started doing "With a Little Help From my Friends" Beatles style, and finished it like the Joe Cocker version. Very clever. Musical scenes of "Let it Be", and "Strawberry Fields" were moving. While the scenes of "Why don't We Do it in The Road", and "Helter Skelter" just rocked! The absolute best song of this movie is "A Day in The Life" by Jeff Beck(studio version). You only hear a bit of it. I first hear the whole song on [...]. Now for those of you who hated this movie, or got offended by it like some reviewers did, first of all LIGHTENED UP a bit. I think it's awesome listening to Beatles tunes from a different perspective. It's just entertaining folks, don't take it so seriously!

Across the Universe [Blu-ray] Overview

A LOVE STORY SET AGAINST THE BACKDROP OF THE 1960S AMID THE TURBULENT YEARS OF ANTI-WAR PROTEST, MIND EXPLORATION AND ROCK'N ROLL, THE FILM MOVES FROM THE DOCKYARDS OF LIVERPOOL TO THECREATIVE PSYCHEDELIA OF GREENWICH VILLAGE, FROM THE RIOT-TORN STREETS OF DETROIT TO THE KILLING FIELDS OF VIETNAM.

Across the Universe [Blu-ray] Specifications

Set in America during the Vietnam War, Across the Universe is a powerful love story set against a backdrop of political and social unrest: it's a story of soul-searching, self-doubt, and individual powerlessness cleverly conveyed through a multitude of Beatles songs. Like young adults all across America during the 1960's, Jude (Jim Sturgess), Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), Max (Joe Anderson), Sadie (Dana Fuchs), Prudence (T.V. Carpio), and JoJo (Martin Luther) are in turmoil over the war; questioning their individual roles in the war effort and struggling to find a way to hold true to their beliefs while making a difference in the world. While love proves a powerful uniting force, its limitations become clear as relationships are strained and broken over individual perceptions of responsibility to cause and country. A fairly bizarre juxtaposition of extremely stylized, almost hallucinogenic scenes of swirling colors and reflections, highly choreographed dance segments, seemingly commonplace character interaction, and emotionally packed close-up footage of characters lost in contemplative song, this film imparts a good sense of the confusion and passion of the time and is at once powerful, invigorating, and disturbing. The film runs a bit long at 2-hours 11-minutes and several segments drag noticeably thanks to some incredibly slow song tempos. Warning: this production may change how you think about a favorite Beatles song forever. --Tami Horiuchi

Yes Man [Blu-ray]

Yes Man [Blu-ray] Review

Jim Carrey at his best and Zoey Deschanel shines as an spontaneous, lively gal.
The perfect movie to give you a boost of positive energy while making fun of the power (and consequences) of the word YES!!!.
The "Harry Potter party" sequence will be a classic.
I totally recommend this movie.

The DVD has some good additional language options (subtitles or movie in Spanish and French)

Yes Man [Blu-ray] Feature

  • Carl Allen has stumbled across a way to shake free of post-divorce blues and a dead-end job: embrace life and say yes to everything. Working every funny bone in his nimble body and every muscle in his hilariously mobile face, Jim Carrey plays Carl in a YEScapade about opening up to lifes possibilities especially when those possibilities include romance with an intriguing, free-spirited musician (Z

Yes Man [Blu-ray] Specifications

Jim Carrey does wonders with a slight premise that finds his reserved, emotionally-distant character, Carl Allen, a banker who routinely turns down loan applications, accepting a challenge to open up to life by saying "yes" to everything. A man who constantly disappoints friends by weasling out of opportunities for bonding and happiness, Carl radically changes into a creature of complete spontaneity. By never saying no anymore, he gets into situations with unpredictable outcomes, such as driving a homeless stranger to a scary-looking park at night. But for the most part, whatever Carl says yes to becomes a road to worthwhile experiences, even receiving a promotion at work for approving hundreds of micro-loans against all policy. Zooey Deschanel, who often plays appealing kooks, is very good as Carl's girlfriend, a free spirit who takes to his positivity about everything--for awhile, anyway. Director Peyton Reed (Down with Love) makes the most out of the gimmicky comedy, as does Carrey, who does wonders with scenes that are often left open-ended just to see what the brilliant comic will do with them. --Tom Keogh
