Pinocchio (Two-Disc 70th Anniversary Platinum Edition + Standard DVD+ BD Live) [Blu-ray]

Pinocchio (Two-Disc 70th Anniversary Platinum Edition + Standard DVD+ BD Live) [Blu-ray] Review

Pinocchio is one hour and twenty-seven minutes long and was released in theaters on February 9, 1940. The story begins with Jiminy Cricket introducing the story of Pinocchio and who it all began. Jiminy Cricket hopped into a clock and toy shop where all the clocks and toys are made out of wood. After exploring the place he spots Pinocchio and soon Geppetto, along with his pet cat Figaro, walks into the room to put the finishing touches on the place. At the time Pinocchio had no name and it was Geppetto who gave Pinocchio his name. Figaro and Cleo, Geppetto's pet goldfish, do not like the name. Later on that night, Geppetto makes a wish on the Wishing Star and he wishes that Pinocchio was a real boy. After Geppetto, Figaro and Cleo are sound asleep; the Blue Fairy appears and turns Pinocchio into a living puppet. She tells Pinocchio if he wants to become a real boy then he must prove to be brave, truthful and unselfish. Pinocchio must also be able to tell right from wrong and to listen to his conscience. The Blue Fairy appoints Jiminy Cricket to be Pinocchio's and help him to teach right from wrong. While Jiminy Cricket and Pinocchio are singing Give A Little Whistle, Pinocchio falls onto some pots and wakes up Geppetto, Figaro and Cleo. Geppetto finds to his surprise that Pinocchio has come to life. Geppetto realizes that his wish has come true and is overcome with joy. The next day Geppetto sends Pinocchio to school. On his way to school Pinocchio runs into John Worthingthon "Honest John" Foulfellow and Gideon. Honest John tricks him into actor's life. Jiminy Cricket, who is running late, tries to talk Pinocchio out of it. Pinocchio instead goes with Honest John and Gideon. Honest John real intent is to sell Pinocchio to Stromboli who is a puppet master. Stromboli uses Pinocchio in his act and in his stage debut Pinocchio sings I've Got No Strings. Jiminy Cricket finally catches up to Pinocchio and sees Pinocchio enjoying himself. At first Jiminy was just going to leave Pinocchio, but instead decides to say good-bye to him and wish him luck. When he arrives he finds that Stromboli has locked Pinocchio in a bird cage. Jiminy tries to pick the lock but is unable to do so. The Blue Fairy arrives and asks Pinocchio what has happen. When Pinocchio starts to tells lies his nose begins to grow. The Blue Fairy explains "A lie keeps growing and growing until it's as clear as the nose on your face." Pinocchio say he will go straight the Blue Fairy sets him free. On the way home Pinocchio runs into John Worthingthon "Honest John" Foulfellow and Gideon again. To Pinocchio credit he does try to talk his way out of Honest John offer to go to Pleasure Island saying he has to go home. Honest John once again tricks Pinocchio and as Jiminy Cricket says here we go again. Jiminy Cricket has a bad feeling about Pleasure Island and Pinocchio along with his new friend Lampwick go off and have a good time. Jiminy finally finds Pinocchio playing pool with Lampwick and Jiminy is furious. Pinocchio is having a good time does not want to leave and Jiminy leaves in a huff. Jiminy finds out the truth about Pleasure Island; the kids are being turned into donkeys to be sold to salt mines and circuses. Jiminy runs back to inform Pinocchio about what is going. In the meantime Pinocchio is watching Lampwick turn into a donkey and Pinocchio is also taking on donkey features. Pinocchio grows a donkey's tail and ears. Jiminy arrives and rescues Pinocchio. Once the two are back home they find the home baron and a message from the Blue Fairy saying Geppetto, Figaro and Cleo went looking for him but were swallowed by a whale named Monstro and resides there now. Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket go in search of Monstro and find him. Pinocchio is swallowed by Monstro and is reunited with Geppetto, Figaro and Cleo. Pinocchio comes up with a plan to escape and Monstro sneeze the gang out of his stomach. This makes Monstro angry and tries to get them back in his stomach again. Pinocchio is able to save his father but at the cost at his own. Back at Geppetto's home, they are all morning the lost of Pinocchio. Unknown to the mourners the Blue Fairy appears and because Pinocchio has brave, truthful and unselfish, she turns Pinocchio. Pinocchio is one of Disney's greatest classics and has a mixture of humor, sadness, and song. Pinocchio gets an AAAAA+++++.

Pinocchio (Two-Disc 70th Anniversary Platinum Edition + Standard DVD+ BD Live) [Blu-ray] Specifications

This Disney masterpiece from 1940 will hold up forever precisely because it doesn't restrain or temper the most elementalemotions and themes germane to its story. Based on the Collodi tale about a wooden puppet who wants to become a real boy, Pinocchio is among the most magical, mythical, and frightening films to come from the studio in its long history. A number of scenes make permanent impressions on young minds (just ask Steven Spielberg, who quoted the film more than once in Close Encounters of the Third Kind), and the songs ("When You Wish upon a Star") can't be beat. --Tom Keogh

Ultimate Unrated Comedy Collection (Forgetting Sarah Marshall / Knocked Up / The 40-Year-Old Virgin) [Blu-ray]

Ultimate Unrated Comedy Collection (Forgetting Sarah Marshall / Knocked Up / The 40-Year-Old Virgin) [Blu-ray] Review

I bought this 3 pack since it was cheaper then getting each of them individually, and honestly all 3 are worth owning for fans of the Judd Apatow type of comedies that we're seeing lately. The real world, rated R type with a combination of stoner and dirty humor mixed together. The humor throughout is pretty much the same because of the source, and you'll also see some of the same characters pop up that are normal to Apatow's crew like Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen.

All 3 are solid comedies, with my favorite being Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I only give this 4 stars because the Blu-ray quality on all of these aren't exactly the greatest. They're better then DVD, sure, but they aren't as sharp as some of the best looking Blu-ray transfers out there which is a bit of a disappointment. My box also came with all 3 blu-ray cases inside a bit nicked and damaged, which is a bit of a disappointment. The box these come in is just a cheap cardboard cover with the 3 regular movies kept inside. I've thrown away the box and just filed the movies on my shelf in alphabetical order.

Ultimate Unrated Comedy Collection (Forgetting Sarah Marshall / Knocked Up / The 40-Year-Old Virgin) [Blu-ray] Overview

Three of the most outrageous and quotable comedies of all time - Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin - are available together for the first time! Judd Apatow's comic genius is thoroughly exposed with hilarious unrated and extended versions of each film as well as hours of undeniably funny bonus materials, plus interactive features exclusive to Blu-ray Hi-Def. It's the wild threesome that everyone wants in their living room!

Ultimate Unrated Comedy Collection (Forgetting Sarah Marshall / Knocked Up / The 40-Year-Old Virgin) [Blu-ray] Specifications

Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Breaking up is hard to do--but that doesn't mean you can't have some belly laughs about it. Forgetting Sarah Marshall provides that rare treat: a romantic comedy about breakups, that is both romantic and funny. The laughs, especially from writer-star Jason Segel, are both heartfelt and raunchy, and the film is just unexpected enough that it keeps the viewer's attention till the end. The touches of producer Judd Apatow, who's famously retooled rom-coms to appeal to guys as much as women, are woven throughout the film, but Segel's script, reportedly based on many of his own experiences, is fresh and original. And adult. Forgetting Sarah Marshall features male genitalia laffs presented in unexpected and human ways (the nude breakup scene is played for giggles but also deep poignancy), and the language and sex scenes are strictly for grownups--and rightly so. Segel's script, and his performance as Peter, show that he understands the true nature of adult relationships, which provides the refreshing difference between this film and some of Apatow's other crude creations. The cast is sublime; Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars) plays title character Sarah, a self-absorbed actress, and Russell Brand is her new British honey who accompanies her to--what are the chances?--the exact same Hawaiian resort as Peter, who's nursing his broken heart. Mila Kunis plays Rachel, the resort employee who gives Peter a reason to hope, and Paul Rudd is the surfing instructor who gives him his own brand of heartfelt advice ("When life gives you lemons, just say 'F--- the lemons' and bail," he says cheerily). The pacing is screwball, and the absurdities fly (a "Dracula" musical puppet show, and a surprisingly lovely Hawaiian version of "Nothing Compares 2 U"). Nothing the viewer will forget any time soon.--A.T. Hurley

Knocked Up
Unwanted pregnancy might sound like a risky subject for slapstick comedy, but Knocked Up is from writer-director Judd Apatow--so we are in the hands of a man who likes to push things. And like Apatow's predecessor, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up is a shaggy crowd-pleaser, a comedy strewn with vulgarity but with a sweet heart at its center. A one-night stand between the utterly mismatched Ben (Seth Rogen, his first starring role) and Alison (Katherine Heigl) results in said pregnancy, and the two people reunite for mutual support--even though they barely know each other. Ben's a slob who lives with four other guys, all of whom share the same stunted approach to maturity; Alison is a new on-air personality at the E! channel. That these two eventually develop a shared understanding and affection is perhaps the movie's biggest stretch (some of the male-humor jokes amongst the guys are idiotic enough to test anybody's hope of civilizing them).

Rogen and Heigl don't really jump off the screen, but, to be fair, the movie frequently needs them to play straight while the supporting cast cuts up. Virgin vets Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd are around to supply some humor, as Alison's sister and brother-in-law, and the four idiots who live with Ben (Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Jason Siegel, and Martin Starr) are in their own zone of sophomoric bad taste. Still, by 40-Year-Old Virgin standards, this movie doesn't explode, and it sometimes feels ramshackle to the point of not being thought out. Apatow's indulgence of actors creates some fine moments (Paul Rudd seems to have most of them), but it can also make a movie feel flabby, and this is overlong by the length of a belly. --Robert Horton

The 40-Year-Old Virgin
Cult comic actor Steve Carell--long adored for his supporting work on The Daily Show and in movies like Bruce Almighty and Anchorman--leaps into leading man status with The 40 Year-Old Virgin. There's no point describing the plot; it's about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humor and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (Clueless, The Shape of Things) and Jane Lynch (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener (Lovely & Amazing, Being John Malkovich). And yet... something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm--and it's a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine. --Bret Fetzer

American History X [Blu-ray]

American History X [Blu-ray] Review

This movie is pure propaganda to get white people to dislike their race even more and to embrace the ills of multiculturalism. Here in California we are the eighth largest economy in the world and we have been embracing multicultaralism for a long, long time. I personally know for a fact that any good things about it, are heavily outweighed by the bad things. It is fun to get to know other cultures, and one grows and learns a lot about themselves in the process, but it comes at a terrible price. Multiculturalism is a looting of culture and tradition. It is also the means to lower a people from prosperous, down into the ranks of the nothingness pool of poverty and enslavement. Think that I'm just bigoted and don't know what I'm talking about? I would've said the same thing to me a few years back, as I was also heavily indoctrinated by the media, believing that to roll out the red carpet to all peoples from all lands was an enlightened, peaceful position to be at. Nothing could be further from the truth. Realize that you are not to blame if other countries have become rotten from the inside out. Drop your guilt trip.

American History X is a good movie, I highly doubt there is anyone disputing that. Back in the mid-90s when I was attending the College of San Mateo, we watched it in my 3rd World Cinema class (a controversial class taught by a very opinionated black panther, and where my self-hatred really took hold). It's a great movie to watch if you want to have a debate about racial issues afterwords. But the scales are tipped in favor of non-white races in the movie. If you can't immediately see that then just pay attention to the opinions in your debate, almost everyone will be defending every race but the white race after the movie. It has always been one of my favorite movies, but now that I am learning to actually like my own people again, I see it for what it is, yet another brilliant propaganda piece made by Holly Wood, which is in fact an elitist magical world wanded by people who are not of my race, and who are famous for hating my race. Disinformation is a lie sandwich, it will have good truth on the outer layers but a bad lie sandwiched in the middle. This movie is no different.........

The good message: You cannot judge a whole race badly based on the actions of a few bad eggs within it. Every tree has it's good apples and it's rotten apples. One must learn to judge people on an individual basis.

The bad message: If you're a white man, then you should kiss black people's butts because they are more fun and let's face it, you owe it to them. If you don't, then your white brothers and sisters are going to rape and kill you, because that is the real nature of the savage and ignorant white goyim family. Blacks, Mexicans, and Jewish people are just innocent victims of the system, but they want revenge against you for all the atrocities that the system has committed against them, hopefully by your catering to them left and right you can eventually make ammends.

"Ha ha whitey, now the whole world is blaming you for our actions."

American History X [Blu-ray] Overview

Derek Vinyard is dangerous, a coiled fury of hate who leads a neo-Nazi gang. But time and events start to change him. He reassesses his ways while doing time for manslaughter and emerges from prison eager to keep his younger brother (Edward Furlong) from falling victim to the thug cycle of violence and payback. It may be too late. Weaving in and out of events past and present in Dereks life, American History X is revealing in its look at white-supremacist gangs and impassioned in its message that hatred and bigotry can be unlearned. Edward Norton (Fight Club, Pride and Glory) portrays Derek, giving a powerful, persuasive, Oscar®-nominated* performance.

American History X [Blu-ray] Specifications

Perhaps the highest compliment you can pay to Edward Norton is that his Oscar-nominated performance in American History X nearly convinces you that there is a shred of logic in the tenets of white supremacy. If that statement doesn't horrify you, it should; Norton is so fully immersed in his role as a neo-Nazi skinhead that his character's eloquent defense of racism is disturbingly persuasive--at least on the surface. Looking lean and mean with a swastika tattoo and a mind full of hate, Derek Vinyard (Norton) has inherited racism from his father, and that learning has been intensified through his service to Cameron (Stacy Keach), a grown-up thug playing tyrant and teacher to a growing band of disenfranchised teens from Venice Beach, California, all hungry for an ideology that fuels their brooding alienation.

The film's basic message--that hate is learned and can be unlearned--is expressed through Derek's kid brother, Danny (Edward Furlong), whose sibling hero-worship increases after Derek is imprisoned (or, in Danny's mind, martyred) for the killing of two black men. Lacking Derek's gift of rebel rhetoric, Danny is easily swayed into the violent, hateful lifestyle that Derek disowns during his thoughtful time in prison. Once released, Derek struggles to save his brother from a violent fate, and American History X partially suffers from a mix of intense emotions, awkward sentiment, and predictably inevitable plotting. And yet British director Tony Kaye (who would later protest against Norton's creative intervention during post-production) manages to juggle these qualities--and a compelling clash of visual styles--to considerable effect. No matter how strained their collaboration may have been, both Kaye and Norton can be proud to have created a film that addresses the issue of racism with dramatically forceful impact. --Jeff Shannon

Best of Europe: France [Blu-ray] Review

The images are stunning. It is in 1080i but still looks fantastic. Very informative. Rudy Maxa is interesting to listen to and he gives good tips for travelling in the areas he documents. I felt I had to review this blu-ray when I saw one of the two reviews showing a one star review because the person apparantly didn't update their firmware for their Sony laptop computer and had problems watching the disk and rated this one star. They dinged all 3 blu-ray videos in this series for the same reason. There are other titles in this series including England and Italy which are also filmed beautifully and are interesting. Also video is 16:9 and not 1.33:1. Beautiful widescreen.

Iron Monkey [Blu-ray]

Iron Monkey [Blu-ray] Review

Yuen Wo Ping has become synonymous with breathtaking fight choreography, and his distinctive style has been highlighted in films such as THE MATRIX and CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON. IRON MONKEY tells the tale of a small village in China that suffers under corrupt rule from the local governor who hordes grain for himself in the reserves while his people starve. A mysterious figure, dressed all in black and known only as the "Iron Monkey" (Yu Rong Guang), soon rises up and begins his Robin Hood-esque crusade to steal from the rich in order to feed the poverty stricken villagers. When the legendary enforcer Wong Kei-Ying (Donnie Yen) and his young son Wong Fei-Hung (Sze-Man Tsang) arrive in the village, the Iron Monkey finds that he has a very worthy adversary. As Wong Kei-Ying quickly discovers though, outward appearances can be very deceiving, and he soon must make personal choices as he begins fighting against the oppression in the village in order to save his own son.

Yeun Wo Ping serves as not only the fight choreographer on the film, but also as the director as well, and stylistically, IRON MONKEY rivals any of Yuen Wo Ping's more widely known movies. Drawing upon the tradition of Hong Kong martial arts cinema to utilize wire work to allow kung fu scenes to take on an other worldly and supernatural feel, Yuen Wo Ping has since elevated that which had become gimmicky and expected in these films to that of a grace and beauty in artistic movement. Yes, the fight scenes later used in 2000's CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, are completely in the same style as those in IRON MONKEY, but with Yuen Wo Ping, they do not become just rehashed versions of similar themes, but rather have taken on their own distinctive artistic identity, just as one expects to see outrageous stunts in a Jackie Chan film or incredibly fast paced fights in one of Jet Li's movies. With Yuen Wo Ping's style, there is a calmness and grace in the choreography and it is illustrated beautifully in IRON MONKEY as characters chase each other and battle across rooftops. There is a lightness in this approach and an airiness that allows the film to breathe, never stifling the story's progression in sake of a stock action sequence.

A key example of this in IRON MONKEY is a scene where the Iron Monkey and Miss Orchid (Jean Wang) are alone in an open two story room, defying the laws of physics as they both easily fly around to gather papers that were blown around by a breeze. Elementally they each move as light as the air that carries the papers, and while the scene is beautiful in itself to watch, it also serves as a parallel to the gentleness in the relationship between the two characters. Yuen Wo Ping's choreography does become very much like dance, and through it he is able to convey plot elements to the audience without dialogue, thus letting the story progress as opposed to getting bogged down as unfortunately happens in many action sequences in other movies of the genre.

Known as well for his creativity and innovation within his choreography, Yuen Wo Ping likewise envisions some fantastical scenes within IRON MONKEY, including a battle atop a grid of freestanding poles that the main characters must balance upon as they are fighting while an inferno rages below. This sequence is the penultimate one in the movie, and much like the fight amidst the treetops in CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, establishes a defining imagery for the film.

While the beauty of Yuen Wo Ping's choreography is central to the visual dynamic of IRON MONKEY, there are fantastic performances by some talented individuals that make the film more fully realized. Having tremendous athletes who can pull off the complex wire work sequences with apparent ease is one thing, but having them also be able to develop complex characters with multi-dimensional layers is what makes IRON MONKEY a success and does not allow it to be relegated to becoming just another superficially stylized picture. Donnie Yen (SHANGHAI KNIGHTS) is fantastic in his role as Wong Kei-Ying and brings a depth of emotion to the actual historical figure. Coupling this with his extraordinarily adept proficiency as a martial artist, Yen's performance is one of the best seen in recent martial arts epics.

Playing Yen's son, the wonderfully talented young actress Sze-Man Tsang has absolutely amazing martial arts talent, and her ability to play so remarkably well off of Yen and her other adult co-stars further strengthen the core cast that Yuen Wo Ping has assembled for the film. This focus on character, and the incorporation of specific character traits into the fight choreography itself, helps establish a through line in which the audience can be drawn in and in turn empathize with the characters' struggles. This elevates IRON MONKEY into more than just a retelling of a tale from classic Chinese folklore, but something that is indeed timeless and that can be accessed by any audience. When paired with the innovative and distinctive style of Yuen Wo Ping, IRON MONKEY becomes a film that stands apart from its imitators.

For the Blu-ray release, there are two small interviews that comprise the bonus features. The first featurette is a nine minute interview with Quentin Tarantino about his insatiable love for Hong Kong cinema and the other is a six minute interview with Donnie Yen on the making of the film. While not extensive in nature, both interviews provide great insight into the genre and feature clips from multiple other Hong Kong kung fu films to allow the audience to compare and contrast what it is they are talking about, thus making for an enjoyable look into the genre.

Monsters vs. Aliens (Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack)

Monsters vs. Aliens (Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack) Review

Monsters vs. Aliens (Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack) Overview

Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack includes loads of bonus features and B.O.B.'s Big Break in 3D! Blu-ray includes Monsters vs. Aliens in high definition and much more out-of-this-world fun!

When Susan Murphy (Reese Witherspoon) is unexpectedly clobbered by a meteor full of outer space gunk, she mysteriously grows to 49-feet-11-inches tall and is instantly labeled a "Monster" named Ginormica. The military jumps into action, and she is captured by General W.R. Monger (Kiefer Sutherland) and held in a secret government compound filled with other "monsters" like herself. This ragtag group consists of the brilliant but insect-headed Dr. Cockroach P.H.D. (Hugh Laurie); the macho half-ape-half-fish The Missing Link (Will Arnett); the gelatinous and indestructible B.O.B. (Seth Rogen); and the 350-foot grub called Insectosaurus. Their confinement time is cut short however, when a mysterious alien robot lands on Earth and the motley crew of Monsters is called into action to save the world from imminent destruction.

Saawariya [Blu-ray]

Saawariya [Blu-ray] Review

Every so often. In a blue moon, one finds a magical, entrancing work that grabs you from the start. Each character is sympathetic. Each is magical for the staging and talent.
I (we) LOVED this examply of Bollyhoo's ballyhoo. If it was possible for a second helping, i would hold out my bowl for "More Please!".

And Galubji,...ah Galubji. An old dog, I feel as young as a Pup. So beautiful, so wry, so sexy.
The production was lush and vibrant. The music appropriate and rich.
The dances fun and not over the top; placed where they should have been placed.
And the direction,.....with a feather, tickeling and not with a sledge hammer as so many films are badly beaten.
Enough! Basta! Effes!
Watch it. Watch it again after some time has passed. Enjoy it more.

Saawariya [Blu-ray] Specifications

Imagine a movie with the lavish production of Moulin Rouge!, the emotional complexity of a story by the great Russian writer Dostoevsky, a cast of staggeringly beautiful people, and the spectacular choreography of Bollywood extravaganzas? You've just imagined Saawariya, a lush romantic saga decked out in dazzling jewel tones--the entire world gleams with shades of sapphire, emerald, and amethyst. An innocent musician named Raj (Ranbir Kapoor, half Justin Timberlake, half the Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz) falls madly in love with a lovely young woman named Sakina (Sonam Kapoor), who stands every night on a bridge with a black umbrella. But when he learns that she's in love with another man, a man who has been gone for a year but who promised to return that very week, Raj's pure soul turns corrupt with jealousy and longing. The charming lead actors are both making their feature film debut, but in supporting roles are two Bollywood superstars: Salman Khan (once voted the 7th best-looking man in the world by People Magazine) as Sakina's wayward beloved and the rapturously lovely Rani Mukherjee (sometimes known as the Queen of Bollywood) as a prostitute who counsels Raj in his affair, though she may have feelings of her own for the foolish young man. There's nothing else like Bollywood cinema; Saawariya combines wildly theatrical performances and insane dance sequences with an irresistibly sweeping romanticism that puts Titanic to shame. Truly a feast for the eyes and the heart. --Bret Fetzer
