Zombieland [Blu-ray]
Zombieland [Blu-ray] Review
"STAY ALIVE" So are the immortal words of Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) as he tells us how to survive the zombie apocalypse. In college when the zombies took over America, Columbus is now trying to make it back home to Ohio to see if his family is still alive when he runs into Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), a man who excels at killing zombies and just wants a twinkie. In Tallahassee's search for a twinkie, they run across Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin). With the new girls running the show, they all decide to head west to Pacific Playland, a place supposedly free of zombies.
When Shaun of the Dead came out in 2004, written by the guys behind Spaced (if you haven't seen that show, I highly recommend you check it out), it was a breath of fresh air. Recent spoof movies didn't now how to be cutting edge and funny at the same time, but Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg knew how to make an homage correctly. It was only a matter of time before Shaun of the Dead brought forth copy cats. If only all copy cats could be this good!
Zombieland is one of those rare instances where a movie comes out being nearly as good as the movie that inspired it. Like Shaun of the Dead, it can't really be said that Zombieland is truly a spoof as much as it is a comedy that involves zombies. This time they're not the slow moving zombies that inspired Shaun, but they're the fast moving zombies that we've seen more of in the remake of Dawn of the Dead and 28 Days Later. This is important because where Shaun of the Dead was a little more old school, Zombieland tries to give it's story more current flourishes like those seen in more recent indie movies. It gives the movie a nice original narrative feel, but at times can be slightly distracting.
The acting in this movie is superb. Despite the indie flavors of the movie, this film really helps break indie darlings Jesse Eisenberg and Abigail Breslin into the mainstream. Woody Harrelson, though, steals every scene of the movie he's in (with the exception of a brilliant cameo late in the second act of the movie that I'd rather not give away at this moment). Harrelson gives the movie a little bit of an old school hero flavor with his quiet hero, but also has something in his past that gives him a rounded out character to play.
While the movie is great, in the third act of the movie some of the characters make really bad decisions that propel the movie forward. Of course, this brings out the "damsel in distress" portion of the movie that seems to be seen in a lot of movie. It's unfortunate too, in a movie that does so well at being somewhat original in it's premise to nearly fall apart by lazy writing in it's final act.
All in all though, I'd highly recommend this movie. It's still surprisingly refreshing to see a movie that is genuinely funny while still paying great homage to it's predecessors. If you like zombie movies, dark humor, or Shaun of the Dead, you'll probably like this movie. Trust me, give it a shot!
4/5
Zombieland [Blu-ray] Overview
Nerdy college student Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) has survived the plague that has turned mankind into flesh-devouring zombies because he’s scared of just about everything. Gun-toting, Twinkie-loving Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) has no fears. Together, they are about to stare down their most horrifying challenge yet: each other’s company. Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin co-star in this double-hitting, head-smashing comedy.
Zombieland [Blu-ray] Specifications
If there's been a zombie apocalypse and you're road-tripping alone though the wasteland, you could do worse than run into Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), a bourbon-swilling bad-boy butt-kicker with a really cool car. This is where the careful hero of Zombieland, a kid nicknamed Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), finds himself early in the film, and you can hardly blame him for hitching a ride with this swaggering Alpha Male. Still, they have their hands full not only with gibbering zombies but also with two sisters (Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin) who will stop at nothing to reach a Disneyland-like amusement park in L.A. Although Zombieland gets off to a rocky start with Columbus's overly-cute narration (he's got a list of rules for surviving in the zombie world), it settles into an amusing comedy, regularly interrupted by bouts of blood-letting. The road-trip stuff is enough fun that when the movie does arrive at its version of Disneyland, the air goes out of it a little; sure, there's a giant zombie blowout, with entrails flying, but it's not quite the same. Director Ruben Fleischer keeps the gags coming, although the movie is often funnier in its odd little asides (both Eisenberg and Harrelson are expert at this) than in its official jokes. Comic high point: an interlude at the home of a very famous movie star, who plays himself--and we'll leave the spoiler unspoiled, in case anybody hasn't heard about this funny extended cameo. --Robert Horton

Vivre sa vie (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]
Vivre sa vie (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] Review
Vivre sa vie (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] Overview
Vivre sa vie was a turning point for Jean-Luc Godard and remains one of his most dynamic films, combining brilliant visual design with a tragic character study. The lovely Anna Karina, Godard’s greatest muse, plays Nana, a young Parisian who aspires to be an actress but instead ends up a prostitute; her downward spiral is depicted in a series of discrete tableaux of daydreams and dances. Featuring some of Karina and Godard’s most iconic moments—from her movie theater vigil with The Passion of Joan of Arc to her seductive pool-hall strut—Vivre sa vie is a landmark of the French New Wave that still surprises at every turn.

Kid Blu-ray 3-Pack (Night at the Museum / Eragon / Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium) [Blu-ray] Review
These are three very good movies. I went out on a limb on Eragon, but the kids ended up liking it as much as the other two. I think that this is an awesome set for family night...

Casino [Blu-ray] Review
As soon as the main menu appeared, I instantly realized it was going to be an excellent viewing experience. I am not quite sure how they "restored" it, but they did an absolutely spectacular job. All of the colors were alive and vibrant and made it hard to believe this film was made in 1995. I personally did not see any flaws in the picture, nor encountered any problems during the film.
The audio transfer had no problems either. As far as surround sound goes, dialogue sounded great with background actions whispering from speaker to speaker and when the action and music kicked in, it was the full three hundred and sixty degree audio experience.
About the bonus features, I watched the few deleted scenes and "History Alive: True Crime Authors - Casino With Nicholas Pileggi", which was interesting due to hearing true facts as well as seeing photos and live archived footage about the people the film was based upon.
I used my Sony PlayStation 3 for blu-ray format viewing purposes and did not encounter any problems with the disc, film, or features.
If you are a fan of this film, you will not be disappointed at all with this purchase! Add it to your collection today!

Casino [Blu-ray] Specifications
Director Martin Scorsese reunites with members of his GoodFellas gang (writer Nicholas Pileggi; actors Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Frank Vincent) for a three-hour epic about the rise and fall of mobster Sam "Ace" Rothstein (De Niro), a character based on real-life gangster Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal. (It's modeled after on Wiseguy and GoodFellas and Pileggi's true crime book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas.) Through Rothstein, the picture tells the story of how the Mafia seized, and finally lost control of, Las Vegas gambling. The first hour plays like a fascinating documentary, intricately detailing the inner workings of Vegas casinos. Sharon Stone is the stand out among the actors; she nabbed an Oscar nomination for her role as the voracious Ginger, the glitzy call girl who becomes Rothstein's wife. The film is not as fast paced or gripping as Scorsese's earlier gangster pictures (Mean Streets and GoodFellas), but it's still absorbing. And, hey--it's Scorsese! --Jim Emerson

Wow talk about a great deal. Two biblical movies for the price of 1-The Robe and The Passion of The Christ. This was my first time seeing The Robe and I thought it was a wonderful movie. Tyler Perry's Daddy's Little Girls [Blu-ray]
Tyler Perry's Daddy's Little Girls [Blu-ray] Review
A single father, Monty is a garage mechanic who lives in a poor neighborhood and struggles to make ends meet as he raises his three young daughters on his own. But when the courts award custody of his daughters to his corrupt, drug dealing ex-wife, Monty desperately tries to win them back, enlisting the help of Julia, a beautiful and hard nosed attorney he meets during his short stint as a chauffeur. While Monty and the Ivy-League-educated Julia couldn't be less alike, an unexpected romance blossoms, and it soon begins to feel like true love. But in order for their relationship to survive, the couple must reconcile their two very different worlds, and overcome the forces that threaten to tear Monty's family apart. Such a great movie, thoroughly enjoyed it. The acting was outstanding as well as the message. Nice blend of comedy, drama and a good dose of reality. Another great movie by Tyler Perry.
Tyler Perry's Daddy's Little Girls [Blu-ray] Overview
Monty (Idris Elba) is a mechanic struggling to make ends meet while raising his three young daughters. When the court awards custody of his daughters to his ex-wife, Monty desperately tries to win them back with the help of Julia (Gabrielle Union), a beautiful, Ivy League-educated attorney. Monty and Julia couldn't be less alike, but a flame is ignited...touching off a firestorm of love and conflict.
Tyler Perry's Daddy's Little Girls [Blu-ray] Specifications
African-American gospel auteur Tyler Perry leaves behind his over-the-top Madea persona (the driving force of his previous movies Diary of Mad Black Woman and Madea's Family Reunion) to craft a more subdued--yet more emotionally compelling--story. Monty (Idris Elba, The Wire) has been the sole support of his three daughters, but when his ex returns to try to claim them, he can't afford the legal counsel to fight her--until he crosses paths with Julia (Gabrielle Union, Bring It On, Deliver Us from Eva), a lawyer whose successful career hasn't helped her be successful in love. The story of Daddy's Little Girls doesn't hold a lot of surprises; the romance between these two will be bumpy while implausible but necessary-to-the-plot factors keep them from resolving their conflicts until the last moment. But what is surprising--after the grandstanding histrionics of the Madea movies--is how Perry has guided his topnotch actors to rock-solid performances that quietly draw you in. Though the plot twists smack of melodrama, the actors make each scene seem real. The strong supporting cast includes Louis Gosset Jr. (An Officer and a Gentleman) and Tasha Smith, who gives an unflinching and unsettling performance as Monty's ex, who decides to teach her daughters the harshest lessons life has to offer. --Bret Fetzer

Funny Guy Collection (Napoleon Dynamite / Office Space / Young Frankenstein) [Blu-ray]
Funny Guy Collection (Napoleon Dynamite / Office Space / Young Frankenstein) [Blu-ray] Review
I got this collection because it is pretty cheap for three silly flicks and for only .49.
All three movies are hilarious and all looked and sounded amazing on Blu-ray. Office Space in particular looked very very good. Napoleon Dynamite also looked decent for a lower budget film. Young Frankenstein looked pretty good too, but the fact that it is in black and white and sort of was intended to be a little fuzzy.
I think FOX did a great job bringing all of these films to Blu-ray.
All in all, it is well worth it if you're like me and pretty much have a great collection of action Blu-rays an need a chuckle.
