Hurricane on the Bayou [Blu-ray]

Hurricane on the Bayou [Blu-ray] Review

Hurricane On The Bayou is one of the best documentaries of the decade. It is forty minutes, and made for IMAX, which explains why some of the shots used.

The 'Making Of' portion of the DVD explains that the original movie was suppose to be "Storm On The Bayou" featuring Amanda Shaw, a teenage Disney actress and cajun fiddler, Tab Benoit, a blues guitarist and wetlands activist, and a mother Alligator. But when Hurricane Katrina hit in the later stages of its production, the theme and title changed.

Rock and Roll hall of fame member Allen Toussaint, Zydeco legend Chubby Carrier, and gospel queen Martha Wright join our narrators as the film explores the relationship of climate change, levees, development of the Louisiana wetlands, and the resulting devastation from Hurricane Katrina.

The story is told through the narration of Amanda, Tab, Meryl Streep, and Allen Toissaint. The musicians give a diverse angle to this history, humanizing the struggle of the Louisiana Wetlands and the destruction New Orleans.

This is meant to be a respectful family film, so none of the graffic sites, such as dead bodies are shown. Even Amanda Shaw's experience is kept dignified. As she deals with her house and school destroyed, and the uncertain fate of her grandparents, we are never shown her loosing her composure.

The music becomes a powerful narration tool, as the soundtrack hits all the styles of the Delta, the Wetlands, and New Orleans. The film is suppose to be about climate change, weather, and the environment of the Louisiana wet-lands. But the music and the musicians bring a soul to New Orleans, and the Bayou, that is missing from so many hurricane documentaries. This films works as a companion piece for Spike Lee's When The Levees Broke. This is for the family. That is for the adults.

Hurricane on the Bayou [Blu-ray] Overview

A powerfully moving large format film unlike any other, Hurricane on the Bayou carries audiences behind today's news headlines on a journey deep into the soul-stirring heart of Louisiana - before, during and after the unprecedented devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Narrated by Academy Award winning actress Meryl Streep and driven by a rousing jazz, blues and gospel-fueled soundtrack featuring music legends Fats Domino, Aaron Neville, Dr. John and many more, Hurricane on the Bayou is both a haunting document of a storm's human effects and a compelling call to restore Louisiana's wetlands, rebuild New Orleans, and honor the place where America's most vibrant home-grown culture was born.

Unfolding against the poignant backdrop of the most costly natural disaster in America's history, MacGillivray Freeman's IMAX cameras follow a group of four musicians, both legendary and rising, as they explore the electrifying culture of New Orleans: speed through the beautiful, alligator-filled bayous on airboats; recount their heart-wrenching, personal stories of Katrina; and most of all, bring the focus to the rapidly disappearing wetlands that are New Orleans' first line of defense against deadly storms. The wealth, cultural vitality and very future of New Orleans depend on the preservation of these wetlands.

The soundtrack features music legends Fats Domino, Aaron Neville, and Dr. John as well as many more!

EARTH DAYS trailer

Official Selection 2009 Sundance Film Festival It is now all the rage in the Age of Al Gore and Obama, but can you remember when everyone in America was not Going Green? Visually stunning, vastly entertaining and awe-inspiring, Earth Days looks back to the dawn and development of the modern environmental movement—from its post-war rustlings in the 1950s and the 1962 publication of Rachel Carsons incendiary bestseller Silent Spring, to the first wildly successful 1970 Earth Day celebration and the subsequent firestorm of political action. Earth Days secret weapon is a one-two punch of personal testimony and rare archival media. The extraordinary stories of the eras pioneers—among them Former Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall; biologist/Population Bomb author Paul Ehrlich; Whole Earth Catalog founder Stewart Brand; Apollo Nine astronaut Rusty Schweickart; and renewable energy pioneer Hunter Lovins—are beautifully illustrated with an incredible array of footage from candy-colored Eisenhower-era tableaux to classic tear-jerking 1970s anti-litterbug psas. Directed by acclaimed documentarian Robert Stone (Oswald's Ghost, Guerrilla: The Taking of Patty Hearst) Earth Days is both a poetic meditation on humanity's complex relationship with nature and an engaging history of the revolutionary achievements—and missed opportunities—of groundbreaking eco-activism. The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift [Blu-ray]

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift [Blu-ray] Review

Great movie full of action that actually has the dialogue to keep the audience interested. Great storyline, very well written. Has the dialouge and action, suspence to keep the audience interested and to want to watch it again!

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift [Blu-ray] Overview

From the makers of The Fast and the Furious and 2 Fast 2 Furious comes the highest-octane installment of the hit movie franchise built for speed! When convicted street racer Sean Boswell (Lucas Black) tries to start a new life on the other side of the world, his obsession with racing sets him on a collision course with the Japanese underworld. To survive, he will have to master drifting – a new style of racing where tricked-out cars slide through hairpin turns, defying gravity and death for the ultimate road rush. With more mind-blowing stunts and heart-pounding racing sequences than ever, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift puts you in the driver’s seat. “Strap yourself in for a blistering, super-charged ride.” – Pete Hammond, MAXIM

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift [Blu-ray] Specifications

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift has all the elements that spelled success for its predecessors: Speed, sex, and minimal dialogue. The plot doesn't need explication; it's a nonsensical series of confrontations and standoffs that serve to get us from one race to another. Tokyo Drift can most accurately be described as a visual poem about screeching tires, crunching fiberglass, and sleek female skin, set to a killer soundtrack of Japanese pop and hip-hop. The actors are only needed for tight close-ups of narrowed eyes or sweaty hands tightly gripping gearshifts, though Sung Kang, Better Luck Tomorrow, stands out as a vaguely philosophical hoodlum with deadpan charisma. The curved bodies of the cars and the luscious flesh of the women are both shot with a fetishistic hunger. The "drift" style of racing--in which the cars are allowed to slide in order to take sharp turns at high speeds--grabs your eyes; there's a strange, spectral beauty to rows of cars sliding sideways down a mountain road at night. Also starring Lucas Black (Friday Night Lights) as our wheel-happy hero; Bow Wow (Roll Bounce) as the scam-artist comic relief; and martial arts legend Sonny Chiba (Kill Bill) as a yakuza big shot. --Bret Fetzer

The Company [Blu-ray]

The Company [Blu-ray] Review

This is a excellent drama that has excellent production values. It's not totally
realistic in the way spies really work but it's better than some efforts. But most people won't notice that fact.
And in fact the real person; James Jesus Angleton as brillaintly protrayed by michael keatan did in fact keep a mole from ever being in the C.I.A. as long as he was there. He was beyond dilligent in this situation and was successful at it too. After he was gone however: Aldrich Ames became a insidious traitor and murderer that wasn't caught until 1994. Making him the agencies worst mole ever. But during Angletons' time noone was able to do it. The Soviets really got good info from the mid-sixties on from a naval traitor John Walker though. He would be the real "Sasha' but it he wasn't part of the C.I.A.
Anyways this miniseries is still excellent and engaging with great performances from everyone invovled. But Michael Keaton should have gotten a emmy for his fantastic job of one of the most important spy catchers in the history of espionage. The book is better than this series and that fact is probably true of 90% of the movies ever based on books. This blu ray edition looks fantastic and is a directors cut so it's longer than when it was on tv. This series is engaging and doesn't depict any of the spies as monsters or people butchering u.s. citizens like fiends. Many hollywood movies do just that and this one doesn't and is much better done than most spy flicks. It's good entertainment that is not on a anti Cia agenda like lets say 'three days of the condor" which is actually a good thriller but is a paranoid fantasy at heart. This one has large kernals of truth in it and that is better than most spy flicks out there.

The Company [Blu-ray] Overview

COMPANY (BR/2 DISC/WS 1.78 A/DD 5.1/PCM 5.1/ENG-SU

The Company [Blu-ray] Specifications

Handsomely mounted, epic in scope, and featuring an outstanding cast, TNT's The Company might restore some much-needed luster to the image of the Central Intelligence Agency (then again, perhaps not). Based on Robert Littell's popular historical novel of the same name, the show commingles real and invented characters as it traces the CIA's role in several major events, from the earliest days of the Cold War through the collapse of the Soviet Union, with particular attention given to the division of Berlin into East and West in the 1950s, the anti-Communist uprising in mid-'50s Hungary, and the disastrous Bay of Pigs operation in the early '60s.

The first of the miniseries' three parts introduces us to Yale graduates Jack McAuliffe (Chris O'Donnell), Leo Kritzky (Alessandro Nivola), and Yevgeny Tsipin (Rory Cochrane); the first two are recruited by the CIA, but the Russian-born Tsipin sides with the KGB. The initial focus is on the CIA's efforts to find a Soviet mole who's been interfering with the agency's work and putting many American lives at risk. Working with mentor Harvey "The Sorcerer" Torriti (Alfred Molina), who calls him "Sport" and delights in pointing out that such matters are nothing less than a life-and-death struggle between good and evil and right and wrong, McAuliffe skulks around Berlin, where his principal informant and soon-to-be love interest is a lovely young ballerina (Alexandra Maria Lara) with a few secrets of her own. Meanwhile, back in Washington, the colorfully-named CIA counter-intelligence expert James Jesus Angleton (a real guy portrayed with low-key intensity by Michael Keaton) slowly realizes that the mole in question is one of his old pals. And it doesn't stop there. Turns out there's another double agent (codename "Sasha") working for the Reds; this one's deeply embedded in the CIA, and Angleton, a chain-smoking obsessive whose behavior becomes increasingly cold and peculiar, devotes years (and most of the series' third installment) to outing him. The process by which he does just that, culminating in some fairly excruciating interrogation scenes, provides The Company's best moments--especially because we don't know until the very end whether Angleton has fingered the actual Sasha or not.

Viewers unfamiliar with the CIA's history and methods aren’t likely to be very encouraged by what's depicted here--especially in the second part, in which the agency's misadventures in Hungary and Cuba reveal it (as well as the U.S. government overall) to be not merely ineffective but disastrously inept, as well as shockingly callous and hypocritical when it comes to lending material support to the causes it claims to espouse. Still, the series does a good job with many of the elements common to such fare (Robert De Niro's 2006 film The Good Shepherd covers some of the same ground). Codes are written and deciphered. Secrets are kept… and revealed. Shots are fired, and some of them connect. People die, good and bad alike. And even if some of the scenes are a bit overheated and melodramatic, all in all, The Company (which was written by Ken Nolan, directed by Mikael Salomon, and produced by John Calley and Ridley and Tony Scott) is smart and entertaining. And some of it's even true. --Sam Graham

The Narrows [Blu-ray]

The Narrows [Blu-ray] Review

This man is incredible. I have been a fan for a long time and he transforms himself into any character he chooses. I will never understand why this actor has been so under rewarded for his work. He says he doesn't want the leading role parts, but I think he is a leading man and would be wonderful as a romantic lead. He has only gotten better looking and deeper as an actor and he deserves better. This movie was well done and shows how easily one can be drawn into a frightening situation for a means to an end. The supporting cast was also very convincing without being overdone with the Italian ethnicity side of things. The language was very strong and that is not alway pleasing to the ear, but I enjoyed this movie anyway.

Jet Li's Fearless [Blu-ray]

Jet Li's Fearless [Blu-ray] Review

What can one accomplish in 42 years of life? Fearless gives an answer to that question. The film is based on the life of Huo Yuanjia, a national sports hero of old China.

From a young age, Huo watched as his father trained students. His dream was to become like his father, a master fighter. Eventually, he became an excellent stage fighter.

Jet Li gives a moving performance as Huo Yuanjia. On top of his game he makes one tragic decision which leads to fatal consequences for his family. He delivers on a man who loses everything that he loves and falls into the depths of despair.

Wandering aimlessly, Huo finds himself rescued and nursed back to health. A blind girl teaches him the true meaning of life. The scene in the rice paddies is one of the most inspirational parts of this film. From the pit of despair he rises like the phoenix to become the man which Chinese history remembers.

Destiny and fate take over as the course of events lead to the ultimate showdown with four fighters-three Westerners and Japan's national champion. The pride of China is at stake. The ending is truly unexpected but believable.

The marital arts sequences are well choreographed. They are very realistic in comparison to other recent films-no tree dancing in this film.

This film delivers a beautiful tapestry. The action sequences, the scenery and the music make this Chinese composition a graceful work of artistry.

Other reviewers have commented on the DVD quality. Overall, a great story!

Jet Li's Fearless [Blu-ray] Overview

Genre: Action/Adventure
Rating: UN
Release Date: 9-DEC-2008
Media Type: Blu-Ray

Jet Li's Fearless [Blu-ray] Specifications

A moving and inspiring story of redemption and personal triumph in the face of great odds, Jet Li's Fearless is the based-on-facts story of Chinese folk hero Huo Yuanjia (Jet Li). The son of a martial-arts master whose greatest strength was his restraint, Huo grows into an unbeatable fighter whose pride and thoughtlessness lead to a chain of tragic losses. After a classic wanderer-in-the-wilderness penance, Huo reinvents himself as a mature instructor of Wushu, a martial arts system that embraces all forms of fighting without preference or pre-judgement. He also becomes a populist symbol, at the dawn of the 20th century, of China's refusal to entirely capitulate to the boot of Western colonialists. Taking on whatever European, American, or Japanese fighter the outsiders bring in to demoralize the natives, Huo becomes a legend that, in real life, is still revered. Thrillingly directed by Ronny Yu (Warriors of Virtue), Jet Li’s Fearless is a dazzling action movie that transcends its breathless fight sequences with Huo's sportsmanship virtues, i.e., knowing when you've won by example, rather than by the fist. Jet Li is superb in the role. --Tom Keogh

Richard Bangs' Adventures with Purpose: Switzerland [Blu-ray] Review

quality of bluray is awesome and the scenery is breathtaking.

while its commendable to note that they emphasize heavily on the echo-friendly aspects of tourism (almost seems to be the main focus and also seems to be the case with other titles from the same author), it is not obvious from the description on the product.

4 starts because it was not fully satisfying (as are some of history or travel channel's tourism documentaries) and left me wanting more. But for its worth it.

Ghosts of Mars [Blu-ray]

Ghosts of Mars [Blu-ray] Review

There is a reason Ghost of Mars keeps popping up on TV, in video, in DVD, now in Blu-Ray ... it is just plain fun. Not to mention that Natasha Henstridge it is ALWAYS enjoyable to look at. Sadly, she isn't even mentioned in the Amazon display of this DVD as the star of the film. As with all Carpenter films, Escape from New York, Escape From LA and so forth, you are expected to suspend all "reason". It is about entertainment. Frankly, I found the special effects very good and FAR superior to the last 50 Sci-fi channel movies that appeared in DVD. If you like Zombies, sci-fi, grade-A actors and actresses, semi-reasonalble plots and have a sense of humor, you'll enjoy Ghost of Mars.

Ghosts of Mars [Blu-ray] Overview

From John Carpenter, the master of horror behind 1998's hit John Carpenter's Vampires and classics like The Thing and Halloween, comes a sci-fi thriller full of explosive action and bone-chilling suspense. Natasha Henstridge (Species) is Melanie Ballard, a headstrong police lieutenant on Mars in the year 2025. Humans have been colonizing and mining on the red planet for some time, but when Ballard and her squad are sent to a remote region to apprehend the dangerous criminal James "Desolation" Williams, played by Ice Cube (Three Kings), they discover that he's the least of their worries. The mining operations have unleashed a deadly army of Martian spirits who take over the bodies of humans and won't stop until they destroy all invaders of their planet. With a stellar cast including Pam Grier (Jackie Brown), Jason Statham (Snatch) and Clea Duvall (The Faculty), as well as explosive special effects, John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars is an intergalactic terror fest like you've never seen.

Ghosts of Mars [Blu-ray] Specifications

Ghosts of Mars may not be one of John Carpenter's finer efforts, but you can't knock the veteran director for staying true to his roots--it's clearly a Carpenter film, reveling in its B-movie blood lust, and fueled by the director's rock & roll rebellion as well as the sex appeal of star Natasha Henstridge. This rickety sci-fi/horror hybrid recalls Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13, with various connections from throughout the director's career--for better and worse. It's the year 2176, and human colonists on Mars are controlled by a political "matronage," with women (for reasons unexplained) holding court in the capitol city of Chryse. Mars Police Force Lt. Ballard (Henstridge) has been sent to retrieve James "Desolation" Williams (Ice Cube), the planet's most notorious criminal, from a remote mining-colony prison. With her ill-fated crew, Ballard discovers that the colonists have nearly all been possessed by ancient Martian spirits bent on reclaiming the planet, turning them into an army of self-mutilating freaks suggesting an unholy union of Marilyn Manson and the sadomasochistic Cenobites from the Hellraiser films. None of this makes much sense, and the shaky alliance between cops and criminals is a predictable excuse for rampant battle scenes between surviving humans and the ghost-possessed maniacs. Exotic weaponry abounds (along with cheap special effects and some laughable dialogue), resulting in the gruesome dispatch of expendable costars Pam Grier, Joanna Cassidy, Robert Carradine, and Clea Duvall. Driven by Carpenter's synth-metal score, this violent free-for-all has a few brief highlights, but it's suspenseless and ultimately absurd. It's not much, but for loyal fans it's probably enough. --Jeff Shannon

Armored [Blu-ray]

Armored [Blu-ray] Review

Heist films have been a genre that has yielded some truly amazing movies. The recent THE ITALIAN JOB, RONIN and more, even the Pink Panther series, have given us moments where we root for the bad guy in his attempt to pilfer the goods from an even worse bad guy or banker. And now we have a new entry, ARMORED.

I must admit that when I saw the preview for this film (over and over again it seemed) I had no interest in it. Even as I put it in the DVD player I wasn't expecting much. Perhaps this is why I was so pleasantly surprised.

The film focuses on a group of armored car drivers, friends in the field. New to the group is Ty Hackett (Columbus Short). Ty was a decorated war hero in Iraq who returned to a home where his parents had both died and he was not responsible for his younger brother Jimmy.

Working with Ty is Mike Cochrone (Matt Dillon), Ty's godfather and mentor at the company. Through Mike, Ty got the job he now has as well as friends like Baines (Laurence Fishburne), Quinn (Jean Reno), Palmer (Amaury Nolasco) and Dobbs (Skeet Ulrich). This group welcomes Ty with open arms and a sense of brotherhood.

On a regular run, the armored vehicle containing Ty and Mike and driven by Baines shorts out. Mike smells sugar in the gas tank burning and they know it's a set up. A black van pulls up, two men place explosives on the window and as it is about to go off a few firecrackers explode leaving Baines and Mike laughing. It was nothing more than an initiation prank on Ty who has passed his probationary period.

Mike gives Ty rides to and from work and one night not long after the prank, he tells Ty they have a solution to his money problems (he's about to lose his home). They plan to make the robbery real. The men guarding the money plan on a heist that would take in million and expect him to be a part of the operation. Ty at first refuses but after returning home to find a social worker ready to take Jimmy form him, he agrees, as long as no one gets hurt.

The plan moves along like clockwork, the team loading the money and then heading to an abandoned steel factory where they plan on hiding the money and then making it look as if they were hijacked and the money stolen. But as with all good plans, things go wrong when a bum hiding in the plant sees them. As he tries to get away, Baines shoots him in the back.

Ty has had enough. He attempts to help the man but Mike shoots the bum in the back making sure he's dead. Ty no longer recognizes these men as who he thought they were and takes one of the two armored vehicles they came in to get away. He's stopped by Mike in the other but then locks himself in with the load of cash in the vehicle. Now the men change from simple thieves to murderers who want nothing less than to get Ty and the money out.

While they do so, a police car with an officer (Milo Ventimiglia) shows up. When Ty uses a battery to make the siren on his vehicle go off, Baines shoots the policeman as well. Now the group faces not just murder charges but the possible death of a policeman as well. But he's not dead and Ty risks a move to rescue him and get him inside the vehicle with him.

The cat and mouse game of how to get Ty out, how Ty gets help and whether or not these men will get away with murder and the cash makes for a high speed thriller that delivers on all levels. The most amazing thing to me was that as I watched I found myself surprised that it moved along so quickly. I lost track of time and never once felt like the film dragged at any point.

The film is a perfect combination of story, special effects and performances that make you truly believe these men are who they claim to be. Their motivations, their passions and their brutality are demonstrated by each individual as the film draws to its dramatic ending.

Is it predictable? Sure. But it is the rare heist film that isn't. And even those tend to have a last minute twist in common that makes them different. The joy of a heist film is less about its predictablity and more about the ride it offers getting there.

If you're looking for a film that offers adrenaline pushing moments and a hero to boot, then make a point of picking this one up. It's not a rental only film but one that movie fans might want to even add to their collection.

Armored [Blu-ray] Overview

A crew of officers at an armored transport security firm risk their lives when they embark on the ultimate heist.against their own company. Armed with a seemingly fool-proof plan, the men plan on making off with a fortune with harm to none. But when an unexpected witness interferes, the plan quickly unravels and all bets are off.

Armored [Blu-ray] Specifications

A good cast does its best to make Armored roll, but while this heist flick certainly has its moments, it's ultimately arrested by a predictable story, cliché-ridden dialogue, and ham-fisted direction. Matt Dillon plays Mike, the leader of a sextet of guards working for an armored truck company; other members of the team are portrayed by Laurence Fishburne, Jean Reno, Skeet Ulrich, and Amaury Nolasco, but the key is newcomer Ty (Columbus Short), an Iraq War veteran whose parents have both died, leaving Ty to support his troubled younger brother and somehow pay the mortgage on the home their folks left behind. When Mike and the others cook up a scheme to steal a cool million on their next delivery and then claim they were hijacked, Ty is dead set against it--until he goes home and is greeted by a child-welfare official who threatens to put his brother into foster care unless Ty can prove himself capable of looking after the kid (this is but one of the handy plot conveniences designed to push the story forward). Predictability is one thing, but director Nimrod Antal and screenwriter James V. Simpson's setups are so on-the-nose that Helen Keller could see what's coming ("Promise me nobody gets hurt," Ty says to Mike, which guarantees that the body count will start to mount almost instantly). Armored has some good action sequences, a gritty look, a couple of welcome surprises, and the occasional tense moment. But when the great heist movies are recalled, from Topkapi to Sexy Beast, this one is unlikely to be among them. --Sam Graham

The Dark Knight (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray]

The Dark Knight (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray] Review

I loved The Dark Knight when I saw it in the theater back in the summer of 08 - it was one of my favorite movies of the year. Despite that fact, this was no exception to my recent difficulty calmly sitting through a movie I've seen before (because there's so much else out there I need to be watching!), but that's just me. The real reason I bought this Blu-Ray was for some excellent special features chronicling the making of this triumphant summer blockbuster, and what I got was a bit underwhelming. The two slick documentaries about Batman technology and psychology were neat but lacked much input from the film's creators, just a lot of "experts" and third parties jabbing about Batman-ish subjects. Other than that, there's really just a series of short web documentaries, featuring feedback from Nolan and the rest of the crew, even if the story is largely told in still images. I realize the special features I wanted (something on par with Star Trek or Iron Man) requires lots of extra effort (an extra film crew essentially to see everything go down) and maybe the filmmakers were respecting the late Ledger in not showing day to day behind the scenes footage fearing it would be too unsettling, but I kind of was hoping to be unsettled. What I got was just... meh.

The Dark Knight (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray] Overview

The follow-up to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight reunites director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who reprises the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in his continuing war on crime. With the help of Lt. Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves effective, but soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker, who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces Batman closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante. Heath Ledger stars as archvillain The Joker, and Aaron Eckhart plays Dent. Maggie Gyllenhaal joins the cast as Rachel Dawes. Returning from Batman Begins are Gary Oldman as Gordon, Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox.

The Dark Knight (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray] Specifications

The Dark Knight arrives with tremendous hype (best superhero movie ever? posthumous Oscar for Heath Ledger?), and incredibly, it lives up to all of it. But calling it the best superhero movie ever seems like faint praise, since part of what makes the movie great--in addition to pitch-perfect casting, outstanding writing, and a compelling vision--is that it bypasses the normal fantasy element of the superhero genre and makes it all terrifyingly real. Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) is Gotham City's new district attorney, charged with cleaning up the crime rings that have paralyzed the city. He enters an uneasy alliance with the young police lieutenant, Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman), and Batman (Christian Bale), the caped vigilante who seems to trust only Gordon--and whom only Gordon seems to trust. They make progress until a psychotic and deadly new player enters the game: the Joker (Heath Ledger), who offers the crime bosses a solution--kill the Batman. Further complicating matters is that Dent is now dating Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal, after Katie Holmes turned down the chance to reprise her role), the longtime love of Batman's alter ego, Bruce Wayne.

In his last completed role before his tragic death, Ledger is fantastic as the Joker, a volcanic, truly frightening force of evil. And he sets the tone of the movie: the world is a dark, dangerous place where there are no easy choices. Eckhart and Oldman also shine, but as good as Bale is, his character turns out rather bland in comparison (not uncommon for heroes facing more colorful villains). Director-cowriter Christopher Nolan (Memento) follows his critically acclaimed Batman Begins with an even better sequel that sets itself apart from notable superhero movies like Spider-Man 2 and Iron Man because of its sheer emotional impact and striking sense of realism--there are no suspension-of-disbelief superpowers here. At 152 minutes, it's a shade too long, and it's much too intense for kids. But for most movie fans--and not just superhero fans--The Dark Knight is a film for the ages. --David Horiuchi

On the Blu-ray disc
The Dark Knight on Blu-ray is a great home-theater showoff disc. The detail and colors are tremendous in both dark and bright scenes (the Gotham General scene is a great example of the latter), and the punishing Dolby TrueHD soundtrack makes the house rattle. (After giving us only Dolby 5.1 in a number of big Blu-ray releases this fall, Warner came through with Dolby TrueHD on this one.) One of the most interesting elements of The Dark Knight was how certain scenes were shot in IMAX, and if you saw the movie in an IMAX theater the film's aspect ratio would suddenly change from standard 2.40:1 to a thrilling 1.43:1 that filled the screen six stories high. For the Blu-ray disc, director Christopher Nolan has somewhat re-created this experience by shifting his film from 2.40:1 aspect ratio (through most of the film) to 1.78:1 in the IMAX scenes. While the effect isn't as dramatic as it was in theaters, it's still an eye-catching experience to be watching the film on a widescreen TV with black bars at the top and bottom, then seeing the 1.78:1 scenes completely fill the screen. The main bonus feature on disc 1 is "Gotham Uncovered: The Creation of a Scene," which is 81 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage about the IMAX scenes, the Bat suit, Gotham Central, and others. You can watch the film and access these featurettes when the icon pops up, or you can simply watch them from the main menu. A welcome and unusual feature is that in addition to English, French, and Spanish audio and subtitles, there's an audio-described option that allows the sight-impaired to experience the film as well.

Disc 2 has two 45-minute documentaries on Bat-gadgets and on the psychology of Batman, both in high definition. They combine movie clips, talking heads, and comic-book panels, but aren't the kind of thing one needs to watch twice. More engaging are six eight-minute segments of Gotham Central, a faux-news program that gives some background to events in the movie, plus a variety of trailers, poster art, and more. The BD-Live component on disc 1 is more interesting than on some earlier Blu-ray discs, which could be simply a matter of the content starting to catch up with the technology. There are three new picture-in-picture commentaries, by Jerry Robinson (creator of the Joker), DC Comics president Paul Levitz, and Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.--he's a Batman fan who's made some movie and TV cameos), plus you can record your own commentary and upload it for others to watch. There are also three new featurettes ("Sound of the Batpod," "Harvey Dent's Theme," and "Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard") and two motion comics ("Mad Love," featuring Harley Quinn, and "The Shadow of Ra's Al Ghul"). No longer available is the digital copy of the film (compatible with iTunes and Windows Media, standard definition, download code expires 12/9/09). --David Horiuchi

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest [Blu-ray]

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest [Blu-ray] Review

Captain Jack Sparrow is back and the action is twice as big. The adventure picks up with Capt. Jack in trouble again, this time with Davey Jones looking to collect a debt now due him. The plot thickens when Will Turner learns his father is a crew member aboard Jones' Flying Dutchmen and will do anything to free him of his service. All this and the East India Trading Company is hunting down not only pirates but the means to control the sea! This is probably the weakest of the 3 and it still gets 5 stars. Simply great fun!

NOW FOR MY BLU-RAY THOUGHTS: Another EYE POPPING blu ray! The picture and sound are what blu-ray is suppossed to be! The special features are carried over from the dvd with blu-ray special features added. It's worth every penny. FINAL VERDICT: Walk the plank if you don't upgrade matey! ABSOLUTELY UPGRADE WORTHY!

Experience oceans of fun with Blu-ray™ High Definition.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest [Blu-ray] Specifications

Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the strong suit of the franchise, as the film excels during its stunt pieces, which are impressively extravagant (in particular a three-way swordfight atop a mill wheel). It may help to know that Dead Man's Chest was filmed simultaneously with some of Pirates 3, so don't expect a complete resolution (think more The Empire Strikes Back) or the movie will feel a lot longer than it really is.

Bloom shows a tad bit more brawn this time around, but he's still every bit as pretty as the tomboyish Knightley. (Seriously, sometimes you think they could swap roles.) Bill Nighy (Love, Actually) weighs in as Davy Jones and Stellan Skarsgård appears as Will's undead father. But the film still belongs wholly to Depp, who in a reprise of his Oscar-nominated role gets all the belly laughs with a single widened eyeliner-ed gaze. He still runs like a cartoon hen and slurs like Keith Richards--and he's still one of the most fascinating movie characters in recent history. --Ellen A. Kim

Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music Director's Cut (40th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition and BD-Live) [Blu-ray] Review

Thank you Amazon for the easy processing and fast shipment of my Ultimate Collector's Edition WOODSTOCK order. My wife and I have really enjoyed our purchase and would recommend it to anyone looking to purchase it. PLEASE be aware though, if the DVD you are purchasing says Blu-ray Disc it will not play on a standard DVD Disk Player or Computer. When I purchased this item I did not know this and was in the process of returning it to Amazon. I decided not to return it and purchased a Blu-ray Disk Player, I made a good choice.

Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music Director's Cut (40th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition and BD-Live) [Blu-ray] Overview

Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 06/09/2009

Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music Director's Cut (40th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition and BD-Live) [Blu-ray] Specifications

This director’s cut of Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music, released to coincide with the 40th anniversary of that legendary concert event, has to be one of the most impressive Blu-ray releases of 2009 or any other year--and that’s even before you put the discs in your player. The box is designed to resemble a faux fringe jacket (with an iron-on patch attached), and inside are all manner of shiny bells and whistles, including a lucite paperweight with images from the event, a reprint of LIFE Magazine’s original festival feature, and reproductions of various Woodstock memorabilia, right down to notes left by concertgoers ("Please meet me in front of stage. I have your insulin pills") and a three-day ticket to the event. And hey, if you’re looking for subtitles in Finnish, Thai, or Polish, you’ve come to the right place.

The movie itself now weighs in at nearly four hours long, and is presumably the way director Michael Wadleigh wanted it in the first place. The Blu-ray transfer is definitely an upgrade, as is the soundtrack, which was originally recorded on 8-track tape under less-than-ideal conditions. (Using modern digital technology, audio engineer Eddie Kramer, who was hunkered down in what passed for a recording booth at the Woodstock site, has painstakingly restored the soundtrack--even bringing in some of the musicians to re-play their original parts, as on Santana’s “Evil Ways,” one of the previously unreleased bonus performances. Considering that the event is something of a sacred cow by now, this trick may strike some as blasphemous. Then again, this is hardly the first time that a live concert recording has been sweetened, re-recorded, or otherwise enhanced. In fact, it'd be hard to find one that wasn't. And the additions would have gone largely unnoticed if we hadn't been told about them.) In the end, though, there’s only so much improvement possible, and Woodstock was never about technical brilliance anyway. Nor was it mostly about the music, either. Nor was it mostly about the music, either. There are some terrific performances, from acoustic numbers by Richie Havens and Crosby, Stills & Nash to powerful electric contributions from Santana, Sly & the Family Stone, and Joe Cocker. But the truth is that Monterey Pop, which happened two years earlier, was the more exciting concert, and of the several artists who appeared on both bills (including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Who, Jefferson Airplane, and others), all of them made better music at the California festival. But Woodstock was always less a concert than an overall cultural happening, and Wadleigh and his crew, often employing an effective split-screen technique, do a superb job of corralling and conveying the remarkable atmosphere and spirit of it; you didn’t have to be there to recognize that this was the zenith of the Age of Aquarius (it was also the twilight; with Altamont looming, things would never be this peaceful and idealistic again).

Of principal interest on the second disc will be two hours of additional musical performances, including both additional tunes by those who are in the main feature and appearances by five artists who for various reasons (ego, money, quality, time) never made it into the film at all; of the latter, Creedence Clearwater Revival is excellent, Paul Butterfield and Johnny Winter are good, Mountain is mediocre, and the Grateful Dead, with an interminable (38 minutes!) "Turn on Your Love Light," are awful (a special Blu-ray-only feature lets users organize this material as they see fit). Meanwhile, "From Festival to Feature," a new, hour-long look at the making of the movie, is absorbing and minutely detailed. The Amazon-exclusive content (included on disc 2) is an additional 20 minutes of never-before-seen performance footage in high definition from Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and Country Joe and the Fish plus three bonus featurettes. --Sam Graham

The Passion of the Christ (Definitive Edition) [Blu-ray]

The Passion of the Christ (Definitive Edition) [Blu-ray] Review

Whether you believe in Jesus holiness being the messiah or simply a regular human being, you cannot deny this movie touched you in a way. Many people don't wish to understand that this movie is not about Jesus being tortured, but what he went through in his final moments on earth. Many also state that it is impossible that one can handle such beating and still be able to walk with a huge cross on its back. I did my thoroughly investigation after I watched this film for the first time, browsing through websites from people that have studied such brutal events like the crucifixion. I even watched a special documentary on the Discovery Channel when this movie was released in the theaters, regarding Jesus deaths and all events he went through and they all concluded that it was not pretty to witness it. Back in those times many people were crucified and they had to endure torturous procedures before being killed in the cross. And Jesus, convicted for `swearing' he was the son of God, might of actually tolerated a bit more than the usual.

It was a movie that took a lot of bravery and valor from Mel Gibson to make, and that courage paid off with this great film which includes terrific acting and cinematography. `The Passion of the Christ' does contain a lot of violence and gore, something one must have in mind if they are easily offended by that subject.

The Passion of the Christ (Definitive Edition) [Blu-ray] Overview

Studio: Tcfhe Release Date: 02/17/2009 Run time: 127 minutes Rating: R

The Passion of the Christ (Definitive Edition) [Blu-ray] Specifications

After all the controversy and rigorous debate has subsided, Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ will remain a force to be reckoned with. In the final analysis, "Gibson's Folly" is an act of personal bravery and commitment on the part of its director, who self-financed this -30 million production to preserve his artistic goal of creating the Passion of Christ ("Passion" in this context meaning "suffering") as a quite literal, in-your-face interpretation of the final 12 hours in the life of Jesus, scripted almost directly from the gospels (and spoken in Aramaic and Latin with a relative minimum of subtitles) and presented as a relentless, 126-minute ordeal of torture and crucifixion. For Christians and non-Christians alike, this film does not "entertain," and it's not a film that one can "like" or "dislike" in any conventional sense. (It is also emphatically not a film for children or the weak of heart.) Rather, The Passion is a cinematic experience that serves an almost singular purpose: to show the scourging and death of Jesus Christ in such horrifically graphic detail (with Gibson's own hand pounding the nails in the cross) that even non-believers may feel a twinge of sorrow and culpability in witnessing the final moments of the Son of God, played by Jim Caviezel in a performance that's not so much acting as a willful act of submission, so intense that some will weep not only for Christ, but for Caviezel's unparalleled test of endurance.

Leave it to the intelligentsia to debate the film's alleged anti-Semitic slant; if one judges what is on the screen (so gloriously served by John Debney's score and Caleb Deschanel's cinematography), there is fuel for debate but no obvious malice aforethought; the Jews under Caiaphas are just as guilty as the barbaric Romans who carry out the execution, especially after Gibson excised (from the subtitles, if not the soundtrack) the film's most controversial line of dialogue. If one accepts that Gibson's intentions are sincere, The Passion can be accepted for what it is: a grueling, straightforward (some might say unimaginative) and extremely violent depiction of the Passion, guaranteed to render devout Christians speechless while it intensifies their faith. Non-believers are likely to take a more dispassionate view, and some may resort to ridicule. But one thing remains undebatable: with The Passion of the Christ, Gibson put his money where his mouth is. You can praise or damn him all you want, but you've got to admire his chutzpah. --Jeff Shannon

The Green Berets [Blu-ray]

The Green Berets [Blu-ray] Review

John Wayne, to me, is the consummate actor for the roles he played in his long career in movies. I have been a fan of his and his work since I was a little dude. As an adult I continue to collect his work and enjoy them over and over. I spent 30 years in the Army which started in 1968 and his character and the plot of the movie is very believable and true to the real life war in Vietnam. The rhetoric, clothing, operations and missions and all else about the movie are within acceptable tolerances for this story. The booby traps, the visciousness of the Viet Cong against their own people and the missions are true to life. This movie will be represents actual places, people and events in our military history that should help Americans honor the fewer and fewer Vietnam veterans in our great nation who fought a war that wasn't fought to be won (in my own opinion). A lot of them weren't honored when they came home, they were branded as "baby killers" and the like which caused untold mental agony and distress. God bless 'em (us).
As a side note, his westerns are entertaining and action filled. One of the reasons I enjoy them so much is the screen writer he used for so many years, especially his westerns, James Edward Grant. He is the one who put the Duke's famous phrases onto the screen; phrases like, "a man's got to do what a man's got to do", and "Comfortable?!?! I've been called a lot of things in my life, but comfortable was not one of them." The legend lives on in his movies, as does each of the actors that worked with him for all those decades. He is my favorite western star. The vendor was very particular in the packaging and prompt in getting the DVD out to me. My thanks and kudoes to you and your staff for their attention to detail and professionalism. I'll be back for more.

The Green Berets [Blu-ray] Overview

Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 01/05/2010 Run time: 141 minutes Rating: G

The Green Berets [Blu-ray] Specifications

Anyone who fought in Vietnam can tell you that the war bore little resemblance to this propagandistic action film starring and codirected by John Wayne. But the film itself is not nearly as bad as its reputation would suggest; critics roasted its gung-ho politics while ignoring its merits as an exciting (if rather conventional and idealistic) war movie. Some notorious mistakes were made--in the final shot, the sun sets in the east!--and it's an awkward attempt to graft WWII heroics onto the Vietnam experience. But as the Duke's attempt to acknowledge the men who were fighting and dying overseas, it's a rousing film in which Wayne commands a regiment on a mission to kidnap a Viet Cong general. David Janssen plays a journalist who learns to understand Wayne's commitment to battling Communism, and Jim Hutton (Timothy's dad) plays an ill-fated soldier who adopts a Vietnamese orphan. --Jeff Shannon

Dexter: The First Season [Blu-ray]

Dexter: The First Season [Blu-ray] Review

4.7 stars

This show is excellent mainly due to the tight bond Hall makes with this character. I'm not crazy about any of the acting here except Hall's, but he's flawless throughout, bringing a subtlety that few actors on the big or small screens ever master to this degree.

Nearly every episode is well-written, paced, and directed; the season arc is a good one and plays out nicely, no need for spoilers here!

It does get a little gory at times, but the series is about a serial killer, after all. I have some very queasy thoughts about why a series this twisted is so popular, but I guess it's just another Clint-type revenge drama where psychopathic violence is justified by (a vaguely) moral imperative; we do need our foreign policy to start somewhere.

Hall is even better here than in Six Feet Under, where he was superb. He carries Dexter effortlessly on his shoulders, but one can feel the amount of work and care he's put into this role. It's as impressive as Gandolfini's Tony Soprano, and that's saying a lot. As us isual for most of the best cable dramas, the first season seems to be the best, so savor this one if watching it for the first time.

Miami hasn't looked this good and this bad since Michael Mann was in town.

Dexter: The First Season [Blu-ray] Overview

Genre: Television: Series
Rating: NR
Release Date: 6-JAN-2009
Media Type: Blu-Ray

Dexter: The First Season [Blu-ray] Specifications

An interesting and original idea that's very skillfully executed, Showtime's Dexter is never less than watchable, often quite compelling, and sometimes thoroughly riveting. As the 12 episodes from the show's first season (packaged here in a four disc set) reveal, it's also the epitome of "high concept," a kind of Silence of the Lambs for the C.S.I. generation. Creator-executive producer James Manos Jr.'s title character, one Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall of Six Feet Under renown), works for the Miami Police Department as an blood spatter analyst, visiting crime scenes and helping figure out what happened. He has an avocation, too: during his off hours, he tracks down some very, very bad people who for various reasons have eluded the proper authorities. Seems his adoptive father, a cop himself, taught the kid how to channel his dark side in a "positive" direction; and so, having captured these evildoers (including a child molester-murderer and a recidivist drunk driver with a trail of bodies in his wake), Dex dispatches them with clinical precision, thus making him a serial killer who snuffs serial killers. But there's more--much more, as it turns out. By his own description, Dexter is "a monster," an empty shell who fakes all human interactions and admits to no real feelings for anything or anyone, including his foster sister (Jennifer Carter) and his nominal girlfriend (Julie Benz), a former crack addict and battered spouse who's as uninterested in sex as he is. There's an explanation for Dexter's weirdness, of course, one so deep and traumatic that even he isn't aware of it. It's gradually revealed over the course of the season as he and the cops (who include Erik King, Lauren Velez, and David Zayas, all first-rate) track down the so-called "Ice Truck Killer," a fellow monster whose grisly m.o. both fascinates and taunts our hero, leading to a genuinely shocking and squirm-inducing finale. Dexter can be a bit arch, with an ironic, too-hip-for-the-room tone that get a little old. Still, it's a safe bet that anyone who views this first season will be salivating for the second. Extras include audio commentary on two episodes, a featurette about real-life blood spatter analysis, and a variety of DVD-ROM items. --Sam Graham
