UFC Presents WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting): Aldo Vs Faber [Blu-ray]

UFC Presents WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting): Aldo Vs Faber [Blu-ray] Review

If you're a hardcore MMA fan you already know how great the WEC is and this show is no exception. However if you're unfamiliar with the WEC here's a quick introduction.

The WEC is the "little brother" of the UFC. Both companies are owned by Zuffa, but there's no sharing of talent between the two. The WEC focuses exclusively on the lighter weight classes: lightweight (155 lbs), featherweight (145 lbs), and bantamweight (135 lbs). The fights usually tend to be more dynamic and faster paced than those that take place in the heavier weight classes, and it's because of this that the WEC is quickly becoming one of the best mixed-martial arts promotions in the world.

This card was the WEC's first foray into pay-per-view (all other WEC events are broadcast on the Versus network), and it's because of this that the card is stacked from top to bottom.

The main event is current featherweight champion Jose Aldo defending his belt against former champ Urijah Faber. As one other reviewer pointed out this fight does end up being fairly one-sided, but it's a credit to Faber for going the distance with Aldo since most of the champ's opponents can't make it past the first round.

The co-main event is another title fight, as WEC lightweight champ Ben Henderson takes on Donald Cerrone. These two had a five-round war that ended up as "Fight of the Year" on several lists at the end of 2009, and while the rematch wasn't a repeat of that performance it's still entertaining in its own right.

The main card also features former featherweight champion Mike Brown against "Ultimate Fighter" season 5 runner-up Manvel Gamburyan, a great lightweight showdown between Shane Roller and Anthony Njokuani, and a fantastic fight between up-and-coming bantamweight contenders Scott Jorgensen and Antonio Banuelos.

However there is one fight that stole the show at this event, and it's the fight that's already being talked about as "Fight of the Year" for 2010. Leonard "Bad Boy" Garcia welcomes WEC newcomer "The Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung to America, and this featherweight scrap is one for the ages. If you have a friend who isn't into MMA and you want to get them onboard, this is the fight to show them. It's the kind of fight that can be enjoyed over and over again, and its inclusion on this DVD makes this purchase a no-brainer for any fan of mixed-martial arts.

UFC Presents WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting): Aldo Vs Faber [Blu-ray] Overview

In the most explosive World Extreme Cagefighting event ever, featherweight champion and Brazilian phenom Jose Aldo makes the first defense of his title when he takes on former world champion "The California Kid" Urijah Faber. If one title fight wasn't enough, lightweight champion Ben Henderson takes on Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone in a rematch of their 2009 Fight of the Year. Plus, former featherweight champion Mike Brown battles judo ace Manny Gamburyan.

I Am Legend (Ultimate Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]

I Am Legend (Ultimate Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray] Review

This is a super intense movie at every turn. It didn't feel like one of those cookie cutter Hollywood movies. It was fast paced and action packed. The story line was a bit out there, but that was okay by me. It's great for the entire family. No cursing, nudity or gross scenes. I highly recommend this movie. Ciao

I Am Legend (Ultimate Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray] Overview

Robert Neville is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable, and man-made. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City and maybe the world. For three years, Neville has faithfully sent out daily radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there. But he is not alone. Mutant victims of the plague -- The Infected -- lurk in the shadows... watching Neville's every move... waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Perhaps mankind's last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But he knows he is outnumbered... and quickly running out of time.

I Am Legend (Ultimate Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray] Specifications

Will Smith stars in the third adaptation of Richard Matheson’s classic science-fiction novel about a lone human survivor in a post-apocalyptic world dominated by vampires. This new version somewhat alters Matheson’s central hook, i.e., the startling idea that an ordinary man, Robert Neville, spends his days roaming a desolated city and his nights in a house sealed off from longtime neighbors who have become bloodsucking fiends. In the new film, Smith’s Neville is a military scientist charged with finding a cure for a virus that turns people into crazed, hairless, flesh-eating zombies. Failing to complete his work in time--and after enduring a personal tragedy--Neville finds himself alone in Manhattan, his natural immunity to the virus keeping him alive. With an expressive German shepherd his only companion, Neville is a hunter-gatherer in sunlight, hiding from the mutants at night in his Washington Square town house and methodically conducting experiments in his ceaseless quest to conquer the disease.

The film’s first half almost suggests that I Am Legend could be one of the finest movies of 2007. Director Francis Lawrence’s extraordinary, computer-generated images of a decaying New York City reveal weeds growing through the cracks of familiar streets that are also overrun by deer and prowled by lions. It’s impossible not to be fascinated by such a realistically altered cityscape, reverting to a natural environment, through which Smith moves with a weirdly enviable freedom, offset by his wariness over whatever is lurking in the dark of bank vaults and parking garages. Lawrence and screenwriters Mark Protosevich and Akiva Goldsman wisely build suspense by withholding images of the monsters until a peak scene of horror well into the story. It must be said, however, that the computer-enhanced creatures don’t look half as interesting as they might have had the filmmakers adhered more to Matheson’s vampire-nightmare vision. I Am Legend is ultimately noteworthy for Smith’s remarkable performance as a man so lonely he talks to mannequins in the shops he frequents. The film’s latter half goes too far in portraying Smith’s Neville as a pitiable man with a messianic mission, but this lapse into bathos does nothing to take away from the visual and dramatic accomplishments of its first hour. --Tom Keogh

Final Destination [Blu-ray]

Final Destination [Blu-ray] Review

7.9 THE FILM ITSELF
6.9 VISUALS
7.5 SOUND
7.0 PACKAGING
8.4 EXTRAS

Remembering that Final destination came out in 2000, it's easy to see how old the film looks - especially on blu-ray. But even more so, the dialogue, the some what hammy / cheesy acting and just how young the cast is makes you understand you are not watching an Oscar award winning film.

Final Destination is an above average thriller / horror flick that deals with a young man who has visions of death. When he escapes the "death" that was imminent, the count down is on until death "catches up" to those who escaped. It's an interesting premise and it's handled decently. But after 9 years, it's certainly not the most engaging of stories, it sometimes doesn't really hold your attention and the characters feel cookie-cutter at best. But if you're looking for something different and slightly entertaining, you can do a lot worse than Final Destination.

VISUALS 6.9
There's no reason this should be bought on blu-ray. It looks okay at best, but for visual nuts they will certainly call this "horrible". From the bad haircuts that are really shown well here to the blotchy skin / makeup, some movies just should be left on DVD. Of course, being 9 years old doesn't help, but I've seen movies had 20 years ago that look stunning compared to this. It seems like no remastering has been done here at all.

SOUND 7.5
It's good, but nothing special. And after listening to the entire "isolated score" feature, I'm even more less impressed with this than I originally was. The rest of the sound - dialogue and explosions - are better, but still, nothing that makes you crank up the surround sound or anything.

PACKAGING 7.0
No main menu, the movie just starts with a menu bar that pops up on the bottom. The cover kind of resembles a cheesy teen-horror / action flick, and that's exactly what the film is.

EXTRAS 8.4
Two commentary tracks, one of which is really good (the one with the crew) while the other is average at best (the one with some of the cast members). There is a feature that is commentary by the composer as the entire score is presented over the dialogue. I never listened to one of these before, and this was not a good first selection for a film to do so on. The score just isn't that interesting here and the dialogue is "blah" at best.

"The Perfect Souffle: Testing Final Destination" is an inyteretsing feature I have never seen again. The creators talk about what a testing piece does for the film and what changes after it. Kind of interesting, but glad more films don't have this as it won't be watched by many fans.

"Premonitions" is an obnoxiously cheesy piece about a woman who believes she has the power to see when people are dead or in danger, and that she can see the future. Maybe if she didn't try to force her kids to believe it (that's how it seems anyway) it wouldn't be so bad, but this just seems like a family that will be in the news one day for joining a cult or something.

Then there are 3 deleted scenes that show a radically different ending. These are good because it shows just how far off the ending was, but they're bad because this ending is a horrible decision. So I'm glad they changed it and this is a very interesting original ending.

FINAL VERDICT
Final Destination is a decent film that offers something new to a tired genre, but it certainly hasn't aged well in the 9 years since it was released. The special features are impressive, but aside from the crew commentary and the shocking alternate ending there isn't much substance here.

8.1/10 "IMPRESSIVE"

Final Destination [Blu-ray] Overview

After an eerie premonition leads a handful of passengers to disembark an ill-fated flight, Death with all its ingenious contraptions of doom at the ready stalks those survivors (Devon Sawa, Ali Larter, Kerr Smith and more) one by one in the gory, gleeful shocker that launched the fright-filled film series. Final Destination: the start of it all!

Final Destination [Blu-ray] Specifications

While hardly a spiritual upgrade of the slasher film, this high-concept teen body-count thriller drops hints of The Sixth Sense into the smart-aleck sensibility of Scream. Helmed by X-Files veteran James Wong, who cowrote the screenplay with longtime creative partner Glen Morgan, Final Destination is an often entertaining thriller marked by an unsettling sense of unease and scenes of eerie imagery. It suffers, however, from a schizophrenic tone and a frankly ludicrous premise. A high school Cassandra, Alex Browning (Devon Sawa of Idle Hands), wakes from a preflight nightmare and panics when he's convinced the plane is doomed. His ruckus bumps seven passengers from the Paris-bound plane, which immediately explodes into a fireball on takeoff, but fate hasn't finished with these lucky few and, one by one, death claims them. Wong brings such a funereal tone to these early scenes of survivor's guilt and inevitable doom that the already far-fetched film threatens to veer into unplanned absurdity. Thankfully, the tale loosens up with a playful morgue humor: one of the victims winds up the splattered punch line to a grim joke and elaborate Rube Goldbergesque chains of cause and effect become inspired spectacles of destruction. Final Destination is a pretty silly thriller when it takes itself seriously, and the filmmakers play fast and loose with their own rules of fate, but once they stick their tongues firmly in cheek, the film takes off with a screwy interpretation of the domino effect of doom. --Sean Axmaker

Batman Returns [Blu-ray]

Batman Returns [Blu-ray] Review

We're practically up to our knees in Batman movies by now. Comparing the newer series "Batman Begins" (2005) to the former "Batman" (1989): The more recent series is a rather staight-faced interpretation (good nonetheless) when compared to the previous series which often borders on satire. Jack Nicholson's over the top and enjoyable portrayal of The Joker is such an instance and Danny DeVito is quite funny as the Penguin. This approach, contrasted with Tim Burton's dark and forboding (and wonderful) production design, gives these two films their interesting and edgy atmosphere which is missing from the two succeeding films of this series. I've always thought that Michael Keaton was a fine Batman and players such as Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Kim Basinger and Jack Palance all add to the enjoyment, as does Michael Gough, drolly playing Bruce Wayne's valet. He is fondly remembered as the young businessman in the brilliant Alec Guiness comedy "The Man in the White Suit" from the British Ealing Studios in 1951! Happily, he is still active in the business.

The quality of "Batman Returns" in Blu-ray is superb in detail and color definition and technically superior, I think, to the Blu-ray of "Batman", a film made only three years before. And for some reason that I can't quite figure out, the audio quality of this disc and most other Blu-rays I've auditioned is significantly superior in clarity and dynamic range to equivalent earlier DVD releases. Perhaps audio quality is simply being given more attention these days -- a happy state of affairs if so.

Batman Returns [Blu-ray] Overview

Gotham City faces two monstrous criminal menaces: the bizarre, sinister Penguin (Danny DeVito) and the slinky, mysterious Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer). Can Batman (Michael Keaton) battle two formidable foes at once? Especially when one wants to be mayor and the other is romantically attracted to Bruce Wayne? Like the groundbreaking 1989 original, Batman Returns is directed by the wizardly Tim Burton. And like the first blockbuster, it’s a dazzling adventure that leaves you breathless. Special Features: • Commentary by Director Tim Burton • The Bat, the Cat and the Penguin Making-of Featurette • Shadows of the Bat: The Cinematic Saga of the Dark Knight Part 4: Dark Side of the Knight • Beyond Batman Documentary Gallery – 6 Featurettes: • Gotham City Revisited: The Production Design of Batman Returns • Sleek, Sexy and Sinister: The Costumes of Batman Returns • Making up the Penguin • Assembling the Arctic Army • Bats, Mattes and Dark Nights: The Visual Effects of Batman • Inside the Elfman Studio: The Music of Batman Returns • Souixsie and the Banshees Face to Face Music Video • The Heroes and The Villains Profile Galleries • Theatrical Trailer

Batman Returns [Blu-ray] Specifications

With 1989's Batman, Tim Burton's bold visual style, the late Anton Furst's stunning production design, and the dark dance between doppelgangers suggested by Michael Keaton's tortured Batman and Jack Nicholson's demonic Joker rejuvenated the caped crusader's franchise while setting a dauntingly high bar for any sequel. It's not surprising, then, that 1992's Batman Returns couldn't match the sheer impact of its predecessor, yet the subsequent passing of the baton to Joel Schumacher, and the title hero's retreat to a more conventional persona, make the second Burton Batman worth another look. Perhaps reasoning that the appeal of two dueling schizoids might be upped by adding a third, Batman Returns pits millionaire Bruce Wayne and his alter ego against two equally split personalities, Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer) and the Penguin (Danny DeVito). If the equation yields less than the desired sum, it still gives Pfeiffer and DeVito room for oversized, properly gothic performances, and the very feline Pfeiffer, in particular, has a field day. DeVito's cackling, mutant orphan is nearly as riveting, and the story might have fared better if the scriptwriting committee hadn't tossed in a third villain, Christopher Walken's rapacious industrialist, Max Schreck (coyly named for the actor who played the earliest screen vampire, Count Orlock, in F. W. Murnau's German expressionist classic, Nosferatu), thereby pushing the plot toward rococo excess. Bo Welch's production design sustains the brooding mix of deco and gothic established by Furst, and Danny Elfman's dark, stirring score helps pick up some of the slack. --Sam Sutherland

Ray and Kirk accord it away

Ray Banana Man Comfort and Kirk Side Kick Cameron are raising funds to promote their bastardised version of Charles Darwin's "Origin of Species" to 50 Universities. They need your money to give away 100000 copies to 100 Universities (although why they don't simply pray for the cash I am unsure). While I think putting money in these IDiots pockets is a horrid idea, I do think every student should see their ridiculous arguments and the words of Charles Darwin. Gojira [Blu-ray]

Gojira [Blu-ray] Review

GODZILLA IS THE ALL-TIME JAPAN MONSTER MOVIE CLASSIC.
I HAVE TO CORRECT AMAZON'S DESCRIPTION OF THIS PRODUCT 1st. THE DESCRIPTION STATES " THE ORIGINAL JAPANESE VERSION OF GODZILLA WITHOUT THE AMERICANIZED ADDITION OF RAYMOND BURR" ....WELL THIS IS WRONG IT IS THE AMERICANIZED VERSION WITH RAYMOND BURR AND THE DVD CASING SHOWS BURR'S PICTURE....ALL WELL THIS IS THE VERSION I WANTED ANYWAY.
THE ORIGINAL JAPANESE CLASSIC WAS ACTUALLY FIRST SHOWN IN 1954 AND WAS IN JAPANESE AND BECAME SUCH A HUGE HIT, THEY DECIDED TO REVISE THE FILM FOR THE AMERICANIZED AUDIENCE. THUS THEY INTRODUCED A RELATIVELY UNKNOWN AMERICAN ACTOR AT THE TIME BY THE NAME OF RAYMOND BURR WHO WAS TO BE THE FILMS NARRATOR AS THE AMERICAN REPORTER STEVE MARTIN. ( OF COURSE BURR IS NOW WELL KNOWN FOR HIS ROLES IN DETECTIVE TV SHOWS OF "PERRY MASON" and "IRONSIDES" )
THE PREMISE OF AN AMERICAN REPORTER "STEVE MARTIN" IS KIND OF FAR FETCHED AT THE TIME, TO THINK THAT THE JAPANESE WOULD ACTUALLY LET A AMERICAN REPORTER FOLLOW THEIR TOP JAPANESE SCIENTISTS AND THEIR MILITARY BRASS AROUND IN A JAPANESE CRISIS WOULD HAVE BEEN UNTHINKABLE AT THE TIME. STILL THE PREMISE WORKED, AS BURR IN HIS ROLE, NARRATED TO THE AMERICAN AUDIENCE AS GODZILLA TORE APART JAPAN.
SPECIAL EFFECTS WERE THE 1st IN THE MAKING, I MEAN NOBODY HAD MADE A FILM OF SUCH A GIGANTIC CREATURE DESTROYING CITIES TO CORRECT SCALE. IT'S LIKE WATCHING HISTORY IN THE MAKING . OF COURSE MUCH OF THE DESTRUCTION WAS DONE AT NIGHT IN A BLACK AND WHITE FILM, WHICH WAS SMART BECAUSE YOU COULD HIDE A LOT OF STUFF, BUT THE SCALE IN WHICH THEY WERE WORKING HAD NEVER BEEN ATTEMPTED BEFORE. SURE YOU CAN SOMETIMES TELL IT IS A PERSON IN A RUBBER SUIT WALKING ON MINATURES , AND SOME OF THE BUILDINGS LOOK LIKE CARDBOARD, BUT THIS FILM WAS THE 1st OF ITS KIND AND IT PAVED THE WAY FOR MORE JAPANESE BIG MONSTER FILMS.
OF COURSE IF THE FILM FOLLOWED THE ENDING WHICH SHOWS GODZILLA BEING DISSOLVED IN THE SEA AND ONLY HIS BONES BEING INTACT , THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN NO MORE GODZILLA MOVIES. DEMAND FOR MORE GODZILLA BROUGHT HIM BACK FROM HIS UNTIMELY DEATH AND ALSO CREATED RODAN, MOTHRA...... ETC. ETC.
VERY ENJOYABLE MOVIE, WORTH EVERY CENT THAT I PAID WHICH WAS LESS THAN .00. I DON'T RENT THESE CLASSICS I BUY THEM.

Gojira [Blu-ray] Overview

The Original Japanese Masterpiece

The ocean's surface boils white-hot and a Japanese freighter mysteriously vanishes in the Pacific. Rescue boats meets the same fate, and the superstitious villagers of Odo Island fear an ancient legend has come true: the legend of Godzilla! Reawakened from eons-long sleep by an H-bomb test, the behemoth seeks revenge on the civilized world, turning Tokyo into a wasteland of atomic fire and rubble. Caught in the monster's path of destruction are young lovers Emiko and Ogata, who must betray their friend Dr. Serizawa, a brilliant but tormented scientist, in order to save the world.

Classic Media presents the original and uncut Japanese-language version of Ishiro Honda's Gojira (1954), critically acclaimed as a bold anti-nuclear allegory and one of the greatest monster movies of all time. Also included is Godzilla, King of the Monsters (1956), the popular "Americanized" version starring Raymond Burr as a reporter covering Godzilla's rampage.

Gojira [Blu-ray] Specifications

The first of the Godzilla movies, and the most somber and serious in tone, Godzilla, King of the Monsters was originally a 98-minute Japanese horror film, until a U.S. company bought the rights and reissued the film at its current 79 minutes, replacing sequences involving a Japanese reporter with new inserts of a dour, pipe-smoking Raymond Burr. True to the fashion of cautionary monster movies, Godzilla has arisen due to nuclear radiation--a 400-foot, fire-breathing dinosaur resurrected in Tokyo Bay--and proceeds to devastate Tokyo. Hardly a bogus building is left unbusted, nary a toy tank unmelted, by the reptilian rogue, until scientists discover another weapon of awesome destruction that just might stop him. The special effects are impressive, with the filming done so as to mask the fact that the monster is just a guy in a rubber suit, working better here than in the sequels, where they seem to have given up any pretense to that fact, in favor of flamboyant effects and battle sequences that more often than not are delightfully, unabashedly juvenile. --Jim Gay

Warren Miller's Playground [Blu-ray]

Warren Miller's Playground [Blu-ray] Review

After purchasing Playground, I now own ten or more of the Warren Miller ski movies in both VCR and DVD. I have been a fan of Warren Miller for years and knew of him when I lived in Idaho and he was in Sun Valley beginning his career. The movies have migrated into some real extreme skiing and Playground is a good example of this. The movie is narrated by Jonny Moseley who does a great job of explaining the ski sites and the skiers in the movie. There is a lot of footage from Alaska which highlights the vastness of this state. The interview with Body Miller is interesting as he further explains his passion for ski racing and how his focused attitude sometimes gets him in trouble with the sports and other international media. This movie is a must for any ski movie library.

Dragon Ball Z: Android 13/ Bojack Unbound (Double Feature) [Blu-ray] Review

This set collects DBZ movies 7 & 9. They have been working on rereleasing all 13 DBZ movies and 2 television specials in remastered format on DVD and putting them out simultaneously on Blu-Ray in High Def. The set's each contain two movies and they have been releasing them in order coinciding with the recent series set releases.

This set contains the movies 7 'Android Assault' (renamed since the original north american release was named 'Super Android 13') and 9 'Bojack Unbound'. This set contains the 7th and 9th movies as they opted to release movie 8 'Broly The Legendary Super Saiyan' with Broly's second appearance in movie 10 'Broly Second Coming', which was released earlier because of the popularity Broly has among fans.

Movie 7 'Android Assault' was always a story I liked, it finds Goku and the guys (including Future Trunks) in the city shopping and running various errands. After some humorous character interactions the story kicks in when it is revealed Dr. Gero had three more androids (13,14,15) being prepared to fight Goku and his friends. The androids attack the guys in the city and the three super saiyans (Goku, Trunks and Vegeta) quickly move the fight to a northern climate where no innocents will be hurt. Gohan and Krillin come along and provide some comic relief as the three androids face off against the three super saiyans. In the end Android 13 is more than meets the eye and becomes the unstoppable Super Android 13 taking down all of the guys. This is one of the movies with the familiar formula of Goku being granted the others energy in the end to attempt a final blow at the big bad but at least in this one the others also step in to help him a little more at the end. This is an entertaining movie that any DBZ fan should enjoy.

Movie 9 'Bojack Unbound' was always one of my favorites because it 'retells' my favorite moment in DBZ history where SS2 Gohan uses the one arm Kamehameha with help from his father's spirit. The plot takes place after the cell games and of all the movies taking place out of story continuity this one is actually possible despite not being considered canon. After destroying King Kai's planet Goku has unleashed a terrible imprisoned Villain, Bojack, and his crew. Meanwhile on earth a millionare throws a tournament that the remaining Z fighter's enter to win the cash, even Chi Chi allows Gohan to attempt the cash prize for his education. In the final rounds Bojack and his gang arrive and start taking out the Z Fighter's eventually leaving only Gohan, the only SS2, to stop them. The ending plays out simliar to the end of the cell games and this movie is very entertaining with another original villain idea and design. I enjoyed it.

All the DVD rereleases are not only remastered but come two discs in a steelbook case with nice artwork and title's that line up complementary on a shelf where my old DBZ movies had several mismatched themes across the thirteen movies. The Blu-Ray come with the two movies on one disc and are in the usual Blu-Ray style cases but with nice complementary artwork just the same. The new set designs and remastered and High Def format's may not be enough of a reason for some to double dip for movies they already own but some others and I appreciate it while others who haven't bought them yet get a more affordable chance. Also with two movies per set you save alot of shelf space, and most of us have shelves that are beginning to get a little overcrowded by now.

Great pair of movies, I know everyone likes Broly but in terms of movie villains I would put Broly, Cooler then Bojack and Android 13. They should have brought Bojack back for a second go instead of throwing in more random underdeveloped villains in later movies. My only issue is that they passed up another chance to put Super Saiyan 2 Gohan on a cover opting instead for Vegeta.

If you like this you'll like the steelbook set containing the two specials, 'The History of Trunks' and 'Bardock the Father of Goku'. Thanks for your time.

The Colt [Blu-ray]

The Colt [Blu-ray] Review

If you read enough of the reviews on here, you will find that people with a sharp eye will point out that the crossed sabres insignia on one of the hats is upside down, and although I consider myself a Civil War enthusiast / history buff, I was able to forgive this one quirk and enjoy the movie for what it was: a truly worthwhile movie that was easy to watch and an emotional ride that moves you. I'm really surprised this movie didn't get more attention than it did (or maybe it did back when it first came out in 2005?) but I watched it with my girlfriend and we were both commenting on how much we were enjoying it....and she's not a Civil War enthusiast. Another thing that gets brought up in some reviews is the language, and for a Hallmark Entertainment film, it does contain the "God-*&^$" and a few curse words, but let's face it: it's about adult men fighting during the Civil War, and there are bound to be a few curse words.....but anyone who's reading this probably hears worse in their everyday life, so forgive this movie of its few curse words and keep in mind it does take place during the Civil War and there are moments of action and fighting. The main story is about the Colt, of course, and the emotional attachment of the main character and his fellow soldiers to it. Without giving too much away, the colt is born into a time of chaos and fighting and it turns out to be one good thing that bonds this small troop of Michigan Cavalry. This movie has something for everyone, and it moves along at a good pace and I really didn't find any boring or slow moments at all. There are a few scenes that definitely stand out, and as a grown man, am not ashamed to admit that I got a little emotional watching them because of the characters and their story (especially the main character). The acting is pretty good throughout and this has definitely become one of my favorite movies in my collection! I'm just sorry I'm catching this 5 years later! Overall, I would definitely say buy this movie and sit back and let the story of the Colt unfold and enjoy it. The dialogue, the scenery, the music, it all captures you and takes you back to 1864 and you can't help but cheer for the Colt! The last scene will definitely leave an impression on you......

The Colt [Blu-ray] Overview

It's 1864, and the First Michigan Cavalry is stranded in a Virginia forest, choking with smoldering fires and smoke and chilled by the distant cries of falling men. Among those stranded in this hell: the weary Sergeant Longacre (Steve Bacic, Out of Order); Covington (Darcy Belsher, Legalise), an illustrator enlisted to capture the Civil War in unerring detail; and trooper Jim Rabb (Ryan Merriman, Taken), who counts his brother among the casualties, yet still rides his beloved mare Jen with a true soldier's indomitable will to survive. Then one morning Jim discovers that Jen has given birth and by her side is a newborn colt, shaking and afraid, born to chaos, and clinging to his mother for life. Longacre orders Jim to shoot the foal, lest it prove a hindrance, but Jim--seeing the colt as a consolation and a reminder of the beauty of life--refuses.
An omen of good fortune, Jen and her nursing foal join the team of men marching toward unknown horizons. However, the camp is suddenly taken by Confederates, Jen and the colt are stolen, and Jim spurs a horse in a long, winding chase and shoots the fleeing soldier to retrieve the mother and baby. The incident has left him in darkness, afraid, lost, and separated from his bivouacked brigade, with a dying enemy on his hands. But honoring the Confederate Reb's last wish sparks in Jim a journey of remarkable honor and duty toward enlightenment and untold danger--one that will test the spirit and courage of a country at war and pay heartrending tribute to those of God's creatures who are blessedly innocent to the careless ways of man.

The Losers (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

The Losers (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) Review

For all my reviews visit my website

I am NOT reviewing the DVD. Just the movies unless otherwise stated.

Please note that the rating above might not accurately reflect my thoughts, you will see a rating sentence at the end of the review.

The statement above simply means that there is a lot of killing in this movie. (And an inside joke.) Most of the killing is done with guns, but once in the movie there is a gun-knife battle. They played with this. The saying "you brought a knife to a gun fight" actually doesn't play here. But I sense the director knew that saying and that's why he included the scene. But we're just getting started!!!

This movie was extremely refreshing. I haven't seen an action movie in the theaters like this in ages! It's absolutely great. Everything that is about an action movie is there, so why the he11 is there a PG-13 rating? Not enough blood you MPAA idiots!?!? If you see this movie and feel there isn't enough explosions, you're right. What makes up for the fact is that the explosions that are there are EXTREMELY FAN-@#$%ING-TASTIC OF EXPLOSIONS!!!!

All action movies need a little comedy unless it is a really grim action. And usually, a grim action does not work...it can, but it usually doesn't. This movie delivers the comedy, but recognizes that the comedy needs to be extreme melted cheese on corn or else it will be a comedy. This is action. Horror has comedy as well, but it's Dark Humor, not light humor. Even drama has comedy, but just not in the really big scenes. All movies need comedy, but in a way that doesn't make you feel your watching a comedy. This movie successes in the essay I just wrote.

This movie also plays well in the artistic style. Like a comic book, it paints the name of the city they are traveling to on the scene, as if it were drawn. For instance, you'll find "BOLIVIA" painted on a large forest of trees in an early scenes. Some of those scenes can be a little cheap, but lately, so can Comic Books. Oh, did I forget to mention this movie is based off a comic book? Yeah, it keeps that all-around yet hardcore feeling of a comic book intact. Also, many times, this movie pretends to end but then continues and tricks you. It deliberately confuses the viewer. Something you don't see much anymore because of activists. AKA Hollywood can be a coward.

The acting is above average. It fits well for the action movie type of persona. It isn't crazy like Pro-Wrestling, it isn't freaky like Horror, it's just mild voices with Bad@$$ personalities. I can't explain the acting to well. I think that the acting was made better by the script, I can see the scriptwriter going "okay, how can this be poetic justice?" Or "How can I make this funny?" Something you usually see from the actors, is actually from the scriptwriter and the actors just try there best to put that into their character.

The overall plot wasn't so big, as much as it were the plot of the scenes. Cougar makes the movie all the more awesome, without Cougar there would be no movie, it would just be *sarcasm*SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER OF THE YEAR*sarcasm* material. My favorite scene is not the climax, although that comes close; rather, it is the office scene. This scene is done extremely well.

Visuals were nothing to complain about. But I do have something to complain about, the soundtrack. The end the note on the song that goes ON AND ON AND ON AND ON! (You will figure it out once you see it.) Most of the soundtrack besides that note was okay, but it was the action that was big. People keep getting shot left and right, they even shoot two of they're main characters in the limbs. The second person was a directors smart. There's a scene where two of the main characters are pretending to lay down with no legs. Then, later, that very same person gets shot and has no legs. They even have bodies laying down in both the scenes. I'm noticing directors are coming back.

Explosions. Quality not Quantity. You wanna see the Airplane scene for sure.

There's probably more to talk about in this movie, it's so refreshing. But I can't go on. Rating? 5/5.

The Losers (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) Feature

  • Title: LOSERS, THE BLU-RAY/DVD/DIGI
  • Publisher: WARNER HOME VIDEO / Genre: ACTION/ADVENTURE / Theme: REVENGE / Rating: PG-13
  • Product Type: VIDEO /
  • Platform: BLU-RAY DISC

The Losers (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) Overview

An explosive action tale of betrayal and revenge, The Losers centers around an elite Special Forces unit sent to the Bolivian jungle on a search-and-destroy mission. But the team – Clay, Jensen, Roque, Pooch and Cougar – soon find that they have become the target of a deadly double cross instigated by a powerful enemy known only as Max. Making good use of the fact they’re now presumed dead, the group goes deep undercover in a dangerous plot to clear their names and even the score with Max.

The Losers (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) Specifications

The Losers provides nonstop and pretty thrilling action, with a stellar cast, doing the comic book series from which it was adapted proud in the process. The movie may not have an airtight plot line, but its enthusiastic, talented actors--Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Chris Evans, and the underappreciated Jason Patric--and the crisp, punch-packing direction by Sylvain White more than make up for it. The Losers follows the gambits of a team of U.S. Special Forces, with appropriately comic-bookish names like Clay (Morgan), Roque (Idris Elba), Jensen (Evans), Pooch (Columbus Short), and Cougar (Óscar Jaenada). They're sent to Bolivia, where they are double-crossed and presumed dead--with a big bad evil guy, Max (Patric), hot on their trail. In the jungle, they join up with a mystery woman (Saldana, a confident, believable action hero) with her own agenda--and perhaps not the most trustworthy of intentions. The action is nonstop, with plenty of great special effects, as the team continues mostly under the radar with both its mission and trying to stay one step ahead of the shadowy Max. Morgan is terrific as a budding action star, self-deprecating in the manner of George Clooney, and a man who (almost always) gets the job done. And he'd be nowhere without his crew of sidekicks, all of whom have great chemistry and repartee, though it's Evans's Jensen who gets the best comic-relief lines. "I'm warning you, I am a lethal killing machine," Jensen intones to a mocking disbeliever. "In the words of ancient Taoist masters, 'Don't start none… Won't be none.'" Saldana brings great sex appeal to her role as the mystery ally. The comic-book nonstop action in The Losers makes it the perfect movie escape--a true winner for fans of action, humor, and a little extra kick in the pants. --A.T. Hurley

The Blind Side [Blu-ray]

The Blind Side [Blu-ray] Review

I don't want to appear snarky but "The Blind Side" is not what I would call a great movie. Where it excels is in audience manipulation. Emotion runs so high here that you forget you're watching a first-class sports weepie. This ranks with "Miracle", "Rocky", and "The Rookie" in the annals of sports films that tug at your heart strings. The film is anchored by the terrific dynamic of Sandra Bullock and Quinton Aaron as the surrogate mother and her large but fragile adopted son. One thing I would like to note. I was gratified to see Bullock win the Oscar but if you isolated this specific performance I would probably have given the prize to either Gabourey Sidibe for "Precious" or Carey Mulligan in "An Education". "The Blind Side" is the type of film that is best to be enjoyed and brush aside any minor quibbles.

The Blind Side [Blu-ray] Overview

Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron) knows little about family. Less about football. What the homeless teen knows are the streets and projects of Memphis. Well-to-do Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock) knows little about his world. Yet when she and Michael meet, he's found a home. And the Tuohys have found something just as life-changing: a beloved new son and brother. This real-life story of family and of Michael's growth into a blue-chip football star will have you cheering with its mix of gridiron action and heartwarming emotion. Share the remarkable journey of the college All-American and first-round NFL draft pick who was a winner before he ever stepped onto the playing field.

The Blind Side [Blu-ray] Specifications

The Blind Side takes the true story of a young man who went from abandonment to success as a pro-football player and treats it with respect. The movie doesn't oversell what is, on the face of it, already compelling. It's almost impossible to describe the plot without sounding painfully inspirational: Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron, Be Kind Rewind), a hulking but gentle African-American teen in Tennessee, gets taken in by a well-to-do white family; the mother, Leigh Anne Touhy (Sandra Bullock), pushes and mothers the boy, who eventually wins a football scholarship to the University of Mississippi. In the wrong hands, this could have been maudlin, manipulative, and condescending. To the credit of writer-director John Lee Hancock, adapting Michael Lewis's acclaimed book, the result is intelligent, genuine, and alternately funny and moving. Leigh Anne could easily have been grandstanding and virtuous, but Bullock doesn't shy away from her vain and domineering side. The football scenes will be gripping even to non-sports fans because they've been so successfully grounded in Michael's emotional life. The all-around solid cast includes country music star Tim McGraw, pint-sized Jae Head (Hancock), and Kathy Bates as the tutor who guided Michael's academic success. Don't be surprised if you can't keep yourself from watching all the real-life photos of Michael, Leigh Anne, and the rest of the family that are featured in the credits; by the end of the movie, you will care about them all. --Bret Fetzer

Sherlock Holmes Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law Interview

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are the new dynamic duo in the action packed, and often funny, Sherlock Holmes. Downey and Law star in the detective caper as Detective Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. The actors, who had never met prior to being cast together, got along famously. Their chemistry in the film is absolutely magical! Tribute's Bonnie Laufer had the opportunity to chat with both Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law in London, England about taking on these infamous characters, how they established their wonderful chemistry and how Jude Law is handling his brand new nickname!

State of Play [Blu-ray]

State of Play [Blu-ray] Review

My husband brought home this DVD and I'd never even heard of it. Why wasn't this a huge hit? Was it only in theaters for a minute, or what? My theory: this is another movie that fell victim to a terrible, awful title. I challenge you to remember the title "State of Play" while you are watching it, without cheating and looking at the DVD case.

As for the movie, five hearty stars, two thumbs up, GREAT suspenseful, smart thriller with a terrific all-star cast. A love letter to the dying/ changing newspaper industry, a nod to the Watergate era and the movie "All the President's Men" (a great movie title!), and a taut political drama. I actually hugged my fleece throw at a few places, it was very tense.

Recommendation: Absolutely. Our whole family watched it (two teenagers, two parents) and enjoyed it. Great movie led by stellar cast.

State of Play [Blu-ray] Overview

Academy Award®-winner Russell Crowe leads an all-star cast, including Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams & Helen Mirren in the blistering thriller about deception, manipulation & corruption. When D.C. Reporter Cal McCaffrey (Crowe) is assigned to investigate the murder of an assistant to an up-and-coming politician (Affleck), he uncovers a conspiracy that threatens to bring down the nation’s power structures. In a town of spin-doctors and wealthy power brokers, he will discover one truth: when fortunes are at stake, no one’s integrity, love or life is safe. From director Kevin Macdonald of The Last King of Scotland, State of Play brings together gripping performances, riveting suspense and is “sophisticated, intelligent and powerful” (Shawn Edwards, Fox-TV).

State of Play [Blu-ray] Specifications

The superlative British miniseries becomes a smart, soap opera-free film courtesy The Last King of Scotland's Kevin Macdonald. His writers, including Tony Gilroy (the Bourne series) and Billy Ray (Breach), haven't simply condensed and Americanized the six-hour series--they've reinvented it. Now set in Washington D.C., veteran journalist Cal McAffrey (Russell Crowe, replacing Brad Pitt, who dropped out over script changes) still collaborates with editor Cameron Lynne (a delectably imperious Helen Mirren) and junior reporter Della Frye (Rachel McAdams) on a story involving Cal's politico pal, Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck), but there's a new subtext behind their plunge into sex scandals and corporate malfeasance, since this State of Play also eulogizes old-school beat reporting, and in interviews, Macdonald has acknowledged the influence of newsprint classics like All the President's Men (the Watergate Hotel even shows up as a location). So, while Cal and Della, the Globe’s blogger, try to determine whether the congressman’s aide Sonia (with whom he was having an affair) died at her own hands or the hands of another, they're also fighting for their careers and the survival of their ailing paper. Stephen's political rival Senator Fergus (Jeff Daniels), does his best to stymie their efforts, but PR flack Dominic Foy (Jason Bateman) becomes a reluctant ally. Though fans of the series may miss a few characters, like Cameron's son (played by James McAvoy in the BBC version), Oscar-winning documentarian-turned-filmmaker Macdonald remains true to its spirit. Be sure to stay through the poignant end credits, during which he returns to his doc roots. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
