The Girl Next Door [Blu-ray]

The Girl Next Door [Blu-ray] Review

why are so many people rating this movie of what is about? yes its about torturing a young girl. yes that's immoral. but this movie is great. the plot is great. the performances are great. this film is captivating! it lures you in, and you don't want to miss a scene.

if you cant appreciate good acting and writing, then you should not watch this movie.

The Girl Next Door [Blu-ray] Overview

In a quiet suburban town in the summer of 1958, two recently orphaned sisters are placed in the care of their mentally unstable Aunt Ruth (Emmy® winner Blanche Baker of HOLOCAUST). But Ruth s depraved sense of discipline will soon lead to unspeakable acts of abuse and torture that involve her young sons, the neighborhood children, and one 12-year-old boy whose life will be changed forever. William Atherton (DIE HARD), Catherine Mary Stewart (NIGHT OF THE COMET) and Grant Show (MELROSE PLACE) co-star in this devastating drama adapted from the controversial best seller by Jack Ketchum that Rue Morgue Magazine called one of the most disturbing reads in the history of horror literature.

The Girl Next Door [Blu-ray] Specifications

Based on the novel by acclaimed author Jack Ketchum, The Girl Next Door draws its nerve-wracking power from a real-life horror show--the torture of Sylvia Likens and her sister by Gertrude Baniszewski and her offspring in the mid-1960s (the case also serves as the basis for the film An American Crime). Here, the Likens character is a recently orphaned teen (Blythe Auffarth) taken in by Ruth Chandler (Blanche Baker), a single mother who plies her adolescent sons and their friends with alcohol and lax supervision. Ruth takes an almost instant disliking to the bright young girl and her sister (who is afflicted with polio) and mounts a campaign of mental and physical abuse upon them; her sons quickly fall into step behind their mother, and a neighborhood friend (Daniel Manche) struggles with his own participation in the atrocities. As true crime thrillers go, The Girl Next Door succeeds on many fronts: Baker and Auffarth give impressive performances, and the violence, though harrowing, is never offered as exploitation. Director Gregory Wilson also keeps the pace brisk and breathtaking as the torture escalates; however, he is less capable in the expositional scenes, and the script by Daniel Farrands and Philip Nutman has a leaden ring at times (which undoes the efforts of the younger cast). Still, it's challenging fare for strong-hearted horror and suspense fans. The DVD includes two sets of commentary: one by Wilson, producer Andrew van den Houten, and cinematographer/co-producer William M. Miller, and another by Ketchum and the screenwriters, who pull no punches in expressing their displeasure over changes made to the film's conclusion (and their assessments are entirely correct). Interviews with the cast and crew and the original screenplay (in DVD-ROM format) round out the supplemental features. --Paul Gaita

The Towering Inferno [Blu-ray]

The Towering Inferno [Blu-ray] Review

The action was directed by Irwin Allen, who is a philosopher, so his interview is interesting. In a sense this is classic adventure directing (45% of film). This is the blueprint for the blockbuster, they were here filming behind the scenes and used 4 film crews, so there is McQueen footage behind the scenes, though there exists no film of McQueen being interviewed. Though a lost interview was found of Bruce Lee, who was the Martial arts instructor for McQueen and Stirling Dale Silliphant - the writer of the film! I guess this makes McQueen the old version of Tom Cruise, who does own one of McQueen's bikes. Perhaps Newman represented a version of Denzel Hayes Washington. Lines were added to Mcqueens script so he had the same number of lines as Newman, and his name is to the left in the main titles, so his name is read first. Who also worked with real life fireman to help the role.

The dts HD MA really sizzles out, and the music is mostly on the front, I prefer this because old films can sound fake when you insert rear effects; the film also has an Academy winning song, and a film sound track by the person who did the Star War's theme next.

It does a mythic quality, which can be a good or a bad thing, though it may be a bad thing in this film, I would have preferred something more realistic, and less wanting.

The twin towers were the tallest building then, but in 1974 it was surpassed by the Sears Tower, is a 108-story building. But the Towering Inferno represents the tallest building in the ideal sense, which connects itself to the Tower of Babel, which was in Iraq, so things have turned. So the themes taken on are adultery (Richard Wagner), lying (Fred Astaire), and greed (Richard Chamberlain).

It may not look big, but it feels big - using space within space.

Disaster movies used to work because there was little certainty as to who would survive. Not so in this film, really an amalgam of two original stories, about a group of well-to-do celebrants at the top floor of a skyscraper. Cheapo electrical wiring and bad construction management cause an enormous blaze at the lower floors, steadily rising to consume the revelers. Newman's an architect, McQueen a firefighter, and Fred Astaire a kind old gentleman, for which he was Oscar-nominated. O.J. Simpson plays a security guard who rescues a cat. Now that's a disaster. --Keith Simanton

Over America [Blu-ray]

Over America [Blu-ray] Review

I've seen several of these "armchair tourism" Blu-rays now (like Living Landscapes HD Hawaii [Blu-ray]). Most are little more than screensavers, so I had low expectations for Over America. Unlike some of the other reviewers, based on previous experience with such titles, I wasn't expecting a history lesson, comprehensive survey of American geography or cities, or a documentary of important American places. I took the title at face value and simply wanted to enjoy seeing America in a way that I knew I would probably never be able to -- short of spending my life savings. On that point, Over America delivers and is pleasantly good. There are some aerial fantastic shots that I would never be able to otherwise experience.

You can think of it as a glorified 55-minute sampler of American life, narrated by Tom Skerritt. The video moves from east to west, starting in NYC, going to PA, then DC, Chicago, moving across the heartland, out to CA, then ending in Alaska and Hawaii. There are maybe 15-20 cities/regions profiled. The music selection can seem a bit cliche and dated. I heard cool jazz on at least 3 cities (Chicago, LA, and NY, with the requisite "New York, New York"). I suppose it's appropriate for the region portrayed, as Texas has honky tonk and New Mexico has Spanish guitar. Other parts have more mellow orchestrated music, or simply pianos. The narration isn't particularly exciting or informative though, sounding a bit like a tourist bureau infomercial or a pre-recorded guided tour like you might find in a government visitor information center like the Smithsonian or Ellis Island.

Video quality is inconsistent, with some very good shots of golden canyons and verdant cropfields and some bad hazy shots, especially during low light situations like early morning, and many instances of lens flare and a strange moiring effect from buildings windows, crops, and crowds. New York, for example, has a sort of dreary look to the daytime shots and the autumn foliage of Central Park looks rather dull. Night scenes are most problematic, with severe grain and noise in many shots. On the upside, I really loved the flyovers of the American Heartland and the endless expanses of farmland as well as the canyons.

At the current low price, this is a pretty good bargain if you just want eye candy. All the places shown are subtitled with the name of the location so you can google them later or research further. I think the price is right, and I give it credit for that. This disc is probably best for people who don't have the budget, time, or inclination to travel across this huge country, or to introduce people to the majesty of some of America's places. It's good for footage shot 20 years ago, but not a great example of the Blu-ray format.

Over America [Blu-ray] Overview

Get rare views of some of America s most beloved landmarks, from the Statue of Liberty to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. See the Twin Towers in all their glory before Sept. 11. Over America lets you experience the country like never before. Take a tour of some of the most exciting cities in the nation, from San Francisco to New York and Washington, D.C. Get up close and personal with Alaska s spectacular snow-capped mountains, fly over Chicago s downtown and then travel to Los Angeles for amazing night views of the glittering city. Catch a flight to Hawaii and experience Oahu from above. Then, make your way to the Grand Canyon, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Plus, see stunning film of Texas, Baltimore, Philadelphia and the Pacific Northwest. Let Over America s breathtaking cinematography and original music score help you get away from it all.

Juno (Special Edition + Digital Copy) [Blu-ray]

Juno (Special Edition + Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] Review

I don't know what I was expecting with this one, but it turns out that it's quite good. It's not really a movie about teen pregnancy - that just forms the backdrop. It's more about Juno's journey through these nine months of her life, how she experiences things, how and what she learns, etc. It's not quite a romantic comedy, but it's definitely not a drama, and it's not something sappy. It's quirky, and overall it's positive and fun. Feel-good but also serious, a little odd, and interesting to watch. No boredom here.

Ellen Page does a good job - a cynical, slightly strange teen. Supporting parts by J.K. Simonds, Allison Janney and Jennifer Garner are very well done, good solid perfomances. Jason Bateman's role is a little less well done, but he basically plays a guy who won't grow up, which he does well.

I'd give it a good solid 8 (out of 10), and it's something I'd watch again.

Juno (Special Edition + Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] Specifications

Somewhere between the sharp satire of Election and the rich human comedy of You Can Count On Me lies Juno, a sardonic but ultimately compassionate story of a pregnant teenage girl who wants to give her baby up for adoption. Social misfit Juno (Ellen Page, Hard Candy, X-Men: The Last Stand) protects herself with a caustic wit, but when she gets pregnant by her friend Paulie (Michael Cera, Superbad), Juno finds herself unwilling to terminate the pregnancy. When she chooses a couple who place a classified ad looking to adopt, Juno gets drawn further into their lives than she anticipated. But Juno is much more than its plot; the stylized dialogue (by screenwriter Diablo Cody) seems forced at first, but soon creates a richly textured world, greatly aided by superb performances by Page, Cera, Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman as the prospective parents, and J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man) and Allison Janney as Juno's father and stepmother. Director Jason Reitman (Thank You For Smoking) deftly keeps the movie from slipping into easy, shallow sarcasm or foundering in sentimentality. The result is smarter and funnier than you might expect from the subject matter, and warmer and more touching than you might expect from the cocky attitude. Page's performance is deceptively simple; she never asks the audience to love her, yet she effortlessly carries a movie in which she's in almost every scene. That's star power. --Bret Fetzer

William Shakespeare: As You Like It (Recorded live at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre) [Blu-ray] Review

William Shakespeare: As You Like It (Recorded live at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre) [Blu-ray] Overview

Thea Sharrock's irresistible new production of Shakespeare's popular
romantic comedy stirs wit, sentiment, intrigue and love into a
charming confection which challenges the traditional rules of romance.
At its heart, a feisty but feminine Rosalind (Naomi Frederick), in love
with the endearingly naïve Orlando (Jack Laskey), uses her disguise as
Ganymede to counsel him playfully in the art of wooing. Distraction is
provided by Dominic Rowan, a remarkably funny Touchstone, and
Tim McMullan, whose sonorous tones are perfectly suited to the
lugubrious wit of Jaques. Filmed in High Definition and true surround
sound.

Go [Blu-ray]

Go [Blu-ray] Review

When I saw this film back in 2000 I was shocked at how much fun it was. Watching it multiple times over the past decade (I can't believe this decade is over) I am shocked at how `good' of a film it really is. `Go' may be a little all over the place at times, and it is true that it lacks a real solidified `plot', but this film shockingly holds up very well, beings that it is now nearly eleven years old. It's rare to find films of this nature (in this genre) that age so well.

I mean, I don't think anyone even remotely considered this would be a longstanding modern masterpiece or anything.

The film does borrow a lot from `Pulp Fiction' in structure and pace, and that is a wonderful thing because it basically updates Tarantino's style to envelope what the late nineties was all about. What is so cool about `Go' is that even now, eleven years later, this feels fresh and fun and relevant. Sure, times have changed over the past decade, but `Go' still carries with it a smart and spunky sense of nostalgia. Roaring through a single 24 hour period, `Go' spirals off in a few different directions as it incorporates the lives of a slew of teenage (or barely out of their teens) slackers/hoodlums/`whatever you want to call ems'.

Let's see if this makes sense...

Ronna is about to be evicted, so she drags her friend Claire with her to see drug-dealer Todd to score some drugs they can sell for profit, infringing on Simon's turf, but it's okay because Simon and his buddy Marcus are in Vegas getting roughed up by bouncers. Ronna bites off more than she can chew when she runs into Adam and Zach, two soap opera actors who are forced into a real `sting' operation by an officer named Burke in order to clear their names of a drug charge they claim innocence to.

I think that kind of covers it.

The film is littered with fun performances, all of which really rise to the occasion and deliver mature and believable (and praiseworthy) turns. Sarah Polley is a great (if largely overlooked) actress who has delivered many times before, and this is no exception. Her steely sadness is beautifully mixed with her determination. Timothy Olyphant made a big impression on me when I first saw this movie (I initially campaigned him for a Supporting Oscar nomination), and while I feel as though he has squandered his talent by playing this same character in every movie to the point where his turn here even feels strangely stale, I still remember that I totally loved what he did here when I first saw it. The real standouts for me though, are Katie Holmes (who steals her every scene, not only with her virginal beauty but also with her stellar acting chops) and Scott Wolf. I also really liked Desmond Askew's energetic delivery.

But really, singling out anyone is rather pointless when the entire ensemble cast is truly in tune with one another, the material and their director. If you want a fun film that is brash, engaging, briskly paced and genuinely intense, then `Go' is certainly the movie for you!

Go [Blu-ray] Specifications

Director Doug Liman's follow-up to the winning Swingers is a rollicking adventure that, while lacking in any substantial plot, speeds along with nonstop adrenaline and style to burn. Taking a cue from Pulp Fiction, Liman plays tricks with time and overlapping plots, all of which play out in L.A. and Las Vegas in a 24-hour period sometime between Christmas and New Year's. Slacker grocery-store clerk Ronna (Sarah Polley) is trying to score rent money by selling hits of Ecstasy at a rave party, but winds up inadvertently double-crossing a ruthless dealer (sexy and scary Timothy Olyphant). She's also invading the dealing turf of her coworker Simon (Desmond Askew), a Brit on his first trip to Vegas, which turns nightmarish after a jaunt with pal Marcus (Taye Diggs) to a "gentleman's club" turns violent. And then there's the two soap-opera actors (Jay Mohr and Scott Wolf) who cross paths with Ronna more than once in their attempts to divest themselves of a drug-related charge by participating in a sting.

The way Liman and writer John August layer these stories owes a huge debt to Quentin Tarantino, but the comedy and action sequences rocket like a bat out of hell with energy, humor, and genuine surprise. In addition to some hilarious dialogue exchanges--including a classic scene between Ronna's stoned friend (Nathan Bexton) and a Zen cat--Liman works wonders with one the most winning ensembles in recent memory, a cast that includes both established actors and TV cuties. Mohr, Diggs, and especially Polley (doing a 180 from her turn in The Sweet Hereafter) are as excellent as you'd expect, but it's Wolf (of Party of Five) and Dawson's Creek's Katie Holmes (as Polley's best bud) who turn in revelatory work; Holmes especially seems poised to be a breakout star. An amazing cinematic ride--like a roller coaster, you'll want to go back again and again. --Mark Englehart

Astro Boy [Blu-ray]

Astro Boy [Blu-ray] Review

This is a movie that's sure to please both kids and parents alike. The story is engaging, it has plenty of lessons to teach youngsters, the art is great (on-par with the quality of Pixar films).

Astro Boy [Blu-ray] Feature

  • ISBN13: 0025192058493
  • Condition: NEW
  • Notes: Brand New from Publisher. No Remainder Mark.

Astro Boy [Blu-ray] Overview

Set in futuristic Metro City, Astro Boy is about a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist in the image of the son he has lost. Unable to fulfill the grieving man's expectations, our hero embarks on a journey in search of acceptance, experiencing betrayal and a netherworld of robot gladiators, before he returns to save Metro City and reconcile with the father who had rejected him.

Astro Boy [Blu-ray] Specifications

Are heroes born or made? How does one go about finding one's true destiny? Dr. Tenma (Nicolas Cage), a revered scientist on the floating paradise known as Metro City, has recently created a technologically advanced robot in the image of his late son Toby in an effort to assuage his overwhelming grief. Far from an average robot, his creation (Freddie Highmore) is a thinking, feeling robot endowed with the memories and emotions of the real Toby and powered by a unique blue core energy recently discovered by Dr. Tenma's good friend Dr. Elefun (Bill Nighy). Despite his efforts, Dr. Tenma quickly discovers that his new creation will never replace his human son, and he coldly casts him aside. Being a thinking, feeling robot, the robot boy sets off in search of a place where he might fit in, and his journey lands him below Metro City, on the surface of the wasteland known as Earth, where he is befriended first by a trio of rebellious robots who dub him Astro Boy and later by a group of human orphans led by the robot repairman Dr. Hamegg (Nathan Lane). Although Astro Boy fully intends to confess his robotic origins to the humans, circumstances prevent the disclosure, and his first real friendships are tainted by the underlying deception. Meanwhile, back in Metro City, President Stone (Donald Sutherland) launches a campaign to destroy Astro Boy in an effort to steal the blue core energy and use it with its opposing and very unstable red core energy to guarantee his reelection. In the end, Astro Boy's real ancestry comes to light, and his relationships with the humans and his very existence are threatened. It also falls to Astro Boy to save Metro City from certain destruction at the hands of President Stone. Based on the 1950s Japanese manga and the 1960s Astro Boy Japanese animated television series commonly credited as the first anime cartoon, Astro Boy is an engaging, action-packed film about self-discovery and pursuing one's destiny. While there's a healthy amount of violence and peril in the film, it's generally appropriate for ages 7 and older. --Tami Horiuchi

Galapagos [Blu-ray]

Galapagos [Blu-ray] Review

This continues the tradition of excellence with BBC nature documentaries; interesting information, very high production standards and stunning visuals accompanied by first class narration.

There are three shows in this mini series and each of them are worth watching. They manage to show us more than tortoises and marine iguanas--they also highlight the avian fauna of the island fairly well, including documenting a neat bit of hunting by the short eared owls. Very informative, covering the drift and history of the Galapagos as well as the flora and fauna. I do wish they'd gone into more detail about the effects of the introduced plants and animals, and I wish they'd shot another episode worth of content. It'd have been neat to get a more in depth view of the difference between the older and younger islands--what animals are only found on the younger vs older islands, differences in temps, etc. It covers some of the differences--it shows much more varied topography on the older islands, and implies they have a greater diversity of life, but more detail would have been nice.
Still, a great introduction into the Galapagos and very enjoyable to watch.

Galapagos [Blu-ray] Overview

The inspiration for Darwin's theory of evolution, the Galapagos Islands are a living laboratory, a geological conveyor belt that has given birth to and seen the death of many species of plants and animals. As the western islands rise up from the sea offering a chance of life, the eastern islands sink back beneath the waves guaranteeing only death. Between the two are the middle islands; fertile, lush land in its prime that contains an incredible diversity of life. Nowhere else on the Earth are the twin processes of creation and extinction of species so starkly apparent... see it all unfold before your eyes in this stunning series filmed entirely in high definition from the BBC and the National Geographic Channel.

Galapagos [Blu-ray] Specifications

While its title may be superfluous, Galapagos: The Islands That Changed the World is a beautifully filmed journey into "the islands of the tortoise." Located due west of Ecuador, the Galapagos islands are full of gorgeous scenery and exotic wildlife. And this 150-minute documentary shows it all, thanks to stunning cinematography shot from all viewpoints--the air, sea and, of course, land. The collection is both soothing and exhilarating as it allows viewers to peek in on mating albatrosses (which are monogamous), penguins fishing, and surprisingly graceful giant tortoises swimming in the ocean. The filmmakers also manage to capture a ferocious volcanic eruption that is amazing in its clarity. The problem with many documentaries lies in the narration. A documentary filmmaker hits the jackpot when he is able to get someone like Sigourney Weaver, whose crisp narration fits in beautifully with the sweeping footage in Planet Earth. While Tilda Swanton lends a relaxing quality to Galapagos, her voice at times is a bit too lulling to hold the viewer's interest. The writing also borders on melodramatic, with talk of the simmering sea and such. With visuals as stunning as this, hyperbole is unnecessary. Charles Darwin has described the Galapagos as a world within itself, and it is said that the islands were one of his inspirations for his book The Origin of Species. While the film doesn't clearly explain why the Galapagos are unlike any other place on earth, it does showcase a destination that is unlike what most of us know. --Jae-Ha Kim

The Bank Job [Blu-ray] + Digital Copy

The Bank Job [Blu-ray] + Digital Copy Review

I wasn't familiar with the Baker Street robbery that took place in London in the early '70s and provides the source material for this British picture. The "Bank Job" has a lot to really like, but at the top of my list was the amazing recreation of 1971 London --- from the streets of the city to the styling of the clothing and hair of the characters. This amazing attention to time and place, along with the stellar ensemble cast of petty criminals, immediately sets the tone for this movie and transports you back to the time of post-60s disillusionment.

Unlike other suspense films, "The Bank Job" doesn't have so many twists and turns that it leaves you confused and frustrated trying to piece together an elaborate jigsaw puzzle. Perhaps this is because it is based on a true story and the screenplay remains true to the real life events. I'm still surprised that these petty thieves were able to get away with such a preposterous bank heist. "The Bank Job" is an entertaining, fast paced and engaging movie that is well worth a viewing.

The Bank Job [Blu-ray] + Digital Copy Specifications

A cheerful, energetic, and completely entertaining movie, The Bank Job follows some small-time hoods who think they've lucked into a big-time opportunity when they learn a bank's security system will be temporarily suspended--little suspecting that they're being manipulated by government agents for their own ends. The result is that the movie doubles its pleasures: While the robbery itself has the usual suspense of a heist film, when the robbery is over the hoods find themselves being hunted by the police, the government, and brutal criminal kingpins who were storing dangerous information in a safety deposit box. The Bank Job won't win any awards, but it's enormously fun. Director Roger Donaldson (No Way Out, Species) propels the action along with vigor, editing zippily with perfect clarity among multiple storylines and various colorful characters. Jason Statham (Snatch, The Transporter), as the leader of the bank robbers, successfully steps away from his usual bone-crunching roles to a more human presence. The rest of the cast--including Saffron Burrows (Deep Blue Sea), Keeley Hawes (Tipping the Velvet), David Suchet (Poirot), and many faces familiar from British film and television--give their characters the right degree of personality and flavor without getting fussy or detracting from the headlong rush of the story. A little sex, a lot of action, a sly sense of humor, and a twisty plot; if more movies had these basic pleasures, the world would be a happier place. --Bret Fetzer

Fish Tank [Blu-ray]

Fish Tank [Blu-ray] Review

"Fish Tank" was written and directed by Andrea Arnold. It is a gritty, disturbing coming-of-age story for Mia played by Katie Jarvis, a fifteen year old girl who wishes to be a dancer but lacks raw talent and makes up for it with raw attitude against everyone in her life until the introduction of her mother's new boyfriend, Connor played by Michael Fassbender makes a major impact on her life.

First off, I never deciphered the title. Why Fish Tank? There is a fish in it and some swimming in the water but at no point did I feel this girl was trapped in her life and while she maintained a bit of routine aka swimming in circles, I felt she went through a great deal of journey and changing up of her habits due to new circumstances introduced into her environment so....why?

Next, the main character Mia is almost impossible to like. The biggest problem is that she is difficult to understand when she is speaking and at least 25% of her lines were lost. She is hostile and spews bile out of her mouth at anyone who even glances at her the wrong way. The littlest thing sets her off and even when someone takes a chance on her and shows her attention, tries to get her to smile and encourages her to pursue her goals, she'll turn on them in a heartbeat. Granted, not everyone here is deserving of good behavior, in fact all the characters have a dark streak in them and rub each other the wrong way, but her temper is so explosive that it becomes difficult to make excuses for her purely based on environment and genetics. She has a few fleeting moments of happiness and has a very pretty smile in those rare moments but she never holds on to it and pushes it away as if it makes her vulnerable. This is one tough cookies, almost inaccessible to anyone who speaks to her until a particularly hot older man breaks her down.

All that being said, Katie Jarvis' first movie role as Mia was pretty amazing. The unsentimental presence that she stays guarded with throughout is consistent and compelling for a new performer. Her own dream is to be able to dance but her stiff movements and lack of a gift for rhythm makes all of her moves, no matter how rehearsed seem forced and unnatural. She is extremely defensive and secretive about her dream until she lets another character deeper into her life. The peeling away of the layers and slowly exposing the depths of her character also reveals ulterior motivations of the others in her family. Jarvis' talent is proven in how unsettling the movie feels until the eventual mild, calm ending.

The most enjoyable (if there is something to enjoy here) part of the movie was Michael Fassbender as Connor. Obviously he is an attractive man shirtless but he has an effortless charm and walks the line perfectly between responsible adult and possible lech for a minor. You can't tell what side he is leaning towards because all of his actions and remarks can be seen in both lights and it really keeps you guessing throughout. Either way, the impression is given that he cares about Mia for some reason and encourages her to help her succeed and perhaps the factor that he might be the only person to do that for her wrapped up in a sexy package feeds Mia's hidden desire for him.

The story was riveting and difficult to look away from. It ties your insides up into a knot and stays that way for the two hour duration and is so disturbing that it sticks with you and I have a stomach ache sitting here immediately afterward. The acts were well set up gradually increasing the stakes and suspense and a few scenes I couldn't look away even if I wanted to! The shaky cam was only occasionally distracting and overall served the movie well for realism. The lighting was not always lit in such a way that you could see the characters and the experimentation with light and shadow and focus made the reality take on a different feel adding suspense and confusion. Using these techniques, the film takes on the feel of a waking nightmare while displaying a window into British lower-class.

The Ten Commandments [Blu-ray]

The Ten Commandments [Blu-ray] Review

There is another copy of this film, release one year later with different artwork. As far as I can determine there is no difference between the two, running time and extras are unchanged. The picture and sound quality, wide-screen presentation is identical. We were so impressed with this telling of the story of Moses, that we played it again two nights later. I can say we were impressed with the quality of the production including locations, sets, costume, script/story/dialogue, special effects, and actors. If asked sum up our families overall impression in one word, I would say, "realistic". It is very detailed in its presentation, and sticks closer to the biblical accounts than any other film of Moses. The scenery, sets, costumes I mention are much more authentic than what I have seen in the past. I do not mean expensive, or glamorous like an epic film, just very realistic.

But the writing of the characters is where the movie really excelled. The lead actors and supporting cast take their parts and pull it together with their performances, but there is so much depth and humanity in the way their parts are written. You really get a sense of joy, suffering, betrayal, faith, love and so much more. The part of Moses in not portrayed as a beloved all powerful leader. He has tremendous fear at times, and is burdened non-stop with the stress of leading his people, who are very difficult to lead. Many are the times he is tearful and in pain, begging God to release him of his burden. At one point after the people had broken a promise to the Lord, Moses orders his people that had been living under Egyptian rule for over 900 years to make weapons and learn to fight their way across the desert, and they did. It is not glamorous war but a bloody desperate struggle.

There are portions of the scripture included here that other films shy away from, such as when Moses has a large number of the people killed for breaking a promise to obey the Lords commands. Those that refused to admit this was wrong, ask for forgiveness and swear their allegiance to God were stoned and speared to death. It has the scene where Moses sweetens a poison spring, through Gods instruction. Not to say this movie is all inclusive or completely accurate, no film I have seen yet based on any book ever is, much less biblical movies. Consider that there are 4 books in the bible to tell the story of Moses being Exodus, Deuteronomy, Numbers, and Leviticus. With that in mind you can see the challenge any film maker is faced with, but this is the most complete I have seen yet. I strongly recommend.

Music and Lyrics [Blu-ray]

Music and Lyrics [Blu-ray] Review

Every few years, a musical comedy comes along that perfectly nails a musical era. The late 70s would be "Spinal Tap". The 90s would be "Singles". And here, ladies & gentlemen of the 80s generation, we have "Music and Lyrics".

I don't know if pre-80s or post-80s people would understand the humour, but gawd I was in stitches from the beginning. The film starts with a frighteningly accurate parody of an 80s pop video: complete with plinky synthesizers, moussed hair, atrocious 80s dancing (you know the moves I'm talking about), slutty nurses with grand cleavage, and men with pants that are so tight you can tell their religion. If this description stirs up any high school memories, then this is the movie for you.

People call this a romantic comedy, which it is, but I think the real comedy lies in the cultural satire. Hugh Grant plays the aging popstar "Alex", an ex-80s glamboy who never quite grew up. Over the years he's been reduced to playing highschool reunions and Six Flags themeparks, always eliciting orgasmic screams from the middle-aged women in the crowd but never taken seriously in the real world. Then one day he gets the chance to write a new hit song for a modern pop diva, but he needs a lyricist to make it happen. Enter Drew Barrymore as "Sophie" whose lyric writing skills are only topped by her neurotic behaviour. Instant comedy, my friends.

But really, the plot is almost irrelevant. The point of this film is--in the spirit of Spinal Tap--to mock the silliness of what we all were but are too embarrassed to admit, now that we're "grown up". My fellow refugees from the 80s, this is your catharsis, a way of exorcising all the 80s demons from your closets. You laugh at the screen, but you're actually laughing at yourselves & loving every minute.

Both Hugh & Drew deliver great, believable performances, and the script is fast paced & witty like an old Katharine Hepburn / Cary Grant picture. But what really made this a great film are the riotous performances by the supporting characters: Brad Garrett ("Everybody Loves Raymond"), Kristen Johnston ("3rd Rock from the Sun"), and the rookie Haley Bennett as the perfect Britney/Shakira pop diva whose songs always seem to have the word "booty" in them. Each of these actors add their own particular quirky comedy to this production.

Don't miss your chance to see this movie. Twice even. And the bonus features on the DVD are a real treat: the Gag Reel (bloopers), Deleted Scenes, and The Making Of featurette. Especially if you were born between the years of 1965 and 1975, you must see this movie immediately.

Music and Lyrics [Blu-ray] Overview

First you're hot, then you're not...and then you're Alex Fletcher (HUGH GRANT). So when the sizzlingest tween-queen on the charts asks the has-been '80s pop sensation to write her a song, he grabs for another chance at stardom. Problem: Alex can say it with music, but he sure can't say it with words. Enter Sophie Fisher (DREW BARRYMORE), his beguiling if quirky plant lady, who has a green thumb for lyrics. Together, they go after songwriting success -- and discover that if you want to write the perfect love song, it helps to fall in love. With Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore at the keyboard and Marc Lawrence (Two Weeks Notice) directing, Music and Lyrics is a witty, wacky romantic comedy that faces the music...and laughs!

Music and Lyrics [Blu-ray] Specifications

Music and Lyrics is frothy and sweet, like the top of a perfect cappuccino shared a deux. Hugh Grant is a self-professed "happy has-been," playing his befuddled, adorable persona more spot-on than he has since Four Weddings and a Funeral. As Alex, former member of an '80s pop band who years later is playing at water parks and high school reunions, he's settled into a life of lesser expectations. Drew Barrymore, quietly radiant, is Sophie, the underachieving girl Friday who arrives to water--make that overwater--Alex's plants--and to explode him out of that comfy rut. If the plot's a bit farfetched, it matters not, since the two lead characters are so likable--and make such beautiful music together. Big bonus: the supportive role of Kristen Johnston as Rhonda, Sophie's older sis (and longtime Alex fan) whose hilarious performance threatens to steal the show whenever she's onscreen. (The owner of a chain of successful weight-loss centers, Rhonda tries to comfort a rattled Sophie: "Want to do some stress eating?") The film also marks the remarkable debut of Haley Bennett, who plays a pop star of Britney/Cristina proportions with deadpan sincerity radiating through her skimpy outfits and mega-extensions. As Alex and Sophie work on crafting musical magic, something else is taking hold. It's music to the ears of anyone needing a sweet romantic comedy that hits all the right notes. --A.T. Hurley

The Legend of Zorro [Blu-ray]

The Legend of Zorro [Blu-ray] Review

Lights, camera, ACTION!!! As much as I enjoyed his intro as Zorro, in The Mask of Zorro, I was thrilled with this sequel. I've loved many a Zorro in my time, but Banderas puts just enough "human frailty" into the character to make him my all-time favorite! Catherine Zeta-Jones is beautiful as ever, and it's great to see her character come alive with some 'female fire'. My only critique that could be considered the least bit negative is that the use of the terms "Mom" and "Dad" was totally out of the time period. But then, even Tornado, the horse, was given a few "lines"..... I just had a great time watching this movie...... again and again!

The Legend of Zorro [Blu-ray] Overview

The original caped crusader is back! Antonio Banderas and Academy Award®-winner Catherine Zeta-Jones (2002, Best Supporting Actress, Chicago) return for more swashbuckling action, adventure and excitement in the explosive cinematic thrill-ride, The Legend of Zorro! Having spent the last ten years fighting injustice and cruelty, Alejandro de la Vega (Banderas) is now facing his greatest challenge: his loving wife Elena (Zeta-Jones) has thrown him out of the house! Elena has filed for divorce and found comfort in the arms of Count Armand (Rufus Sewell), a dashing French aristocrat. But Alejandro knows something she doesn't: Armand is the evil mastermind behind a terrorist plot to destroy the United States. And so, with his marriage and country's future at stake, it's up to Zorro to try and save two unions before it's too late.

The Legend of Zorro [Blu-ray] Specifications

The Zorro brand of hot-blooded derring-do returns with The Legend of Zorro, starring Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones in the roles that brought them stardom with The Mask of Zorro. Now married for ten years and parents to young rascal Joaquim (charming Adrian Alonso, perhaps being set up for a future Son of Zorro), dashing swordsman Alejandro (Banderas, a Spaniard playing a Mexican) and sultry spitfire Elena De La Vega (Zeta-Jones, a Welshwoman playing a Spaniard) abruptly divorce, sending Alejandro on a drunken binge--which only gets worse when he learns Elena is being wooed by the mysterious Armand (Rufus Sewell, a Brit playing a Frenchman). Little does Alejandro know that Elena has ulterior motives, and that a worldwide conspiracy and a secret weapon will soon threaten the integrity of the U.S. The Legend of Zorro has way too much plot, leaving room for only two genuinely preposterous donnybrooks and a handful of lackluster brawls. Banderas and Zeta-Jones flash a bit of their considerable charisma, but by and large they (and the movie as a whole) are on autopilot. Not awful, but lacking any real spark. --Bret Fetzer

The Omega Man [Blu-ray]

The Omega Man [Blu-ray] Review

Much of The Omega Man is very dated. As I watched it, the one thing that kept going through my head was that it needs better music. Music can often make or break a film. I feel that this film could be made much more powerful if it had a stronger, more modern music track.

The Omega Man [Blu-ray] Overview

Bluray Disc

The Omega Man [Blu-ray] Specifications

Science fiction took a grim turn in the 1970s--the heyday of Agent Orange, nuclear peril, and Watergate. Suddenly, most of our possible futures took on a "last man on Earth" flavor, with The Omega Man topping the doom-struck heap.

Charlton Heston plays the government researcher behind the ultimate biological weapon, a deadly plague that has ravaged humanity. There are two groups of survivors: a dwindling band of immune humans and an infected, psychopathic mob of light-hating quasi-vampires. The infected are led by Mathias, a clever, charismatic man set on destroying the last remnants of the civilization that produced the plague. Heston has a vaccine--but he and the few remaining normals are outnumbered and outgunned. By day, he builds a makeshift version of the nuclear family (with Rosalind Cash as his afro-wearing, gun-toting little lady). They plan for the future while roaming freely through an empty urban landscape, taking what few pleasures life has left. By night, they defend themselves against the growing horde of plague victims. Both a bittersweet romance and a gothic cautionary tale, The Omega Man paints a convincing portrait of hope and despair. It ain't pretty, but it's a great movie. --Grant Balfour

Strain Hunters India Expedition by Green House Seed Company New 10 minute trailer

Strain Hunters are people that cant sit still for too long. After completing the Malawi expedition in 2008, Arjan and myself began to think about the next mission. We had many destinations in mind, because the list of places where amazing landraces are awaiting is a long one. After much thinking and talking we selected a few top-spots on our list, and started gathering information and ideas. It became very clear that there was one place that could not be overlooked: the region of the Himalayas, particularly the Indian side, where the best charras and creams are from. Ever since 1993, when the Green House won the Cannabis Cup with a cream from Malana, Arjan wanted to explore the origins and the history of this wonderful hashish. His last trip to India was in the 1980s, when he acquired the genetics that gave birth to the Himalaya Gold, one of the most acclaimed outdoor strains ever produced. So we decided time had come to go strain hunting in India. Now we needed a good guide, someone that could show us the right path to the highest fields, the tastiest creams, and the holiest of mountains. A few years back, during one of the Cannabis Expos we attended in Europe, we met Italian book writer and connoisseur Franco Casalone, author of the most famous books on cannabis written in Italy. He lived in the Indian Himalayas for several years, living the life of a true charsí (master of charras-making). We suddenly had the feeling that he was the right man for our mission, so we ...

The Burning Plain [Blu-ray]

The Burning Plain [Blu-ray] Review

"The Burning Plain" simmers slowly, transcending time and space, weaving back and forth chronologically to tell a tale of such pain and grief that it is truly heartbreaking to watch. The incredibly talented Charlize Theron plays Sylvia, a restaurant hostess somewhere in Oregon, who walks dazedly through life, exorcising her inner demons through casual, indiscriminate sex. There's a strange guy (Jose Maria Yazpik) who seems to be stalking her. Then in another strand, there's a discontented housewife (Kim Basinger) who is having an affair with a married man (Joaquim de Almeida). A tragedy ensues, lives are thrown off balance and viewers are left to put the pieces of the puzzle together. I love this method of storytelling (from the same guy who gave us Babel and Amores Perros) and putting things together step by step, though I did manage to 'solve' the dark mystery harbored by Charlize Theron early on in the story. The talented cast, including young actors J.D. Pardo and Jennifer Lawrence who play teenage lovers brought together as a result of the tragedy, deliver finely nuanced performances that elicit viewer's empathy. Nothing is black and white - what initially appear to be flawed and immoral characters are revealed to have surprising depth. This is a movie that slowly engages the viewer's attention and once it does, it takes full grip and never lets go till the final scene.

The Burning Plain [Blu-ray] Overview

Academy Award® winners Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger star in this romantic mystery about hope, redemption and second chances. Sylvia (Theron) is a woman on the edge whose cool, professional demeanor masks a deeply troubled, sexually charged storm within. When a stranger from Mexico confronts her with her mysterious past, she is launched into an emotional journey back to the defining moment of her life. Gina (Basinger) is a housewife trapped in a loveless marriage who finds solace and passion in an illicit affair. Though separated by time and great distances, these women find their lives linked by the forces of love and fate.

The Burning Plain [Blu-ray] Specifications

A painful secret separates a mother and daughter in The Burning Plain, the feature directorial debut by the screenwriter of Babel, 21 Grams, and Amores Perros. The story moves fluidly in time: In the present, Sylvia (Charlize Theron) seems to be leading a confident life as the manager of an expensive restaurant, but it’s a mask covering promiscuity, self-mutilation, and suicidal impulses. Many years earlier, a young girl named Mariana (Jennifer Lawrence, The Bill Engvall Show) tries to piece together what led her mother (Kim Basinger) into an extramarital affair...even as Mariana herself falls into a dangerous relationship with the son of her mother’s lover. These threads and more are interwoven into an increasingly potent knot. The Burning Plain has some obvious dialogue and a few off-key notes, but despite that is a striking first effort by Guillermo Arriaga. Theron has always been best in roles that draw on anger and pain, like her astonishing performance in Monster; she goes bland when called on to portray nobility and happiness, but give her inner demons and her remarkable beauty roils with hidden emotions. The rest of the supporting cast--including John Corbett and Robin Tunney in small roles--turn in strong work. Like a boa constrictor, the movie slowly coils around you, then squeezes. --Bret Fetzer

Ouran High School Host Club: The Complete Series [Blu-ray]

Ouran High School Host Club: The Complete Series [Blu-ray] Review

"The Ouran host Club is where the school's handsomest boys with too much time on their hands entertain young ladies who also have way too much time on their hands."

Well, that's the basic description. But "Ouran High School Host Club: Complete Series" is so much more than just a slapsticky reverse-harem anime -- it's a charming little comedy series that's constantly awash in costumes, geekery, over-the-top schemes, and an adorable budding romance. Even in its more serious moments, it's utterly charming.

Haruhi Fujioka has just started on her scholarship at the elite Ouran Academy, and is looking for a quiet place to study... when she stumbles across the Host Club. The six wealthy boys there entertain girls with flirtation and elaborate costumes and decorations. The members: melodramatic and not-too-bright Tamaki, mischievous Hitachin twins Kaoru and Hikaru, cool-headed genius Kyoya, childlike Honey, and his silent stoic cousin Mori.

But when Haruhi accidentally breaks an antique vase, she finds herself drafted into the Host Club to pay off the debt... and only THEN does Tamaki find out she's a girl. But she continues working at the Host Club, and encounters some pretty bizarre adventures as she tries to navigate the world of the uber-wealthy. And when they aren't entertaining girls, the Host Club tries to help people with their fragmented relationships and troubles.

But just being rich doesn't keep the Host Club members from having their own troubles -- and as she gets to know them, Haruhi learns that the happy-go-lucky Tamaki has a tragic past that threatens to ruin his future. Will the little band of friends be able to help their "boss"?

It's hard to really summarize an anime like "Ouran High School Host Club" -- it's a big fluffy whirl of costumes, roses, over-the-top luxury, and lighthearted pokes at anime conventions ("Yay! There's debauchery here!"). It's just such a fun little show, and it's made even better because it's almost surreal at times -- Haruhi even notes, after an "Alice in Wonderland" dream, that she can't even tell when she's awake or asleep.

There's lots of funny goofy dialogue ("I never would have pegged the boss as an S&M pervert." "I told you! It wasn't like that at all!") and hilariously weird situations (the guys all dress up in over-the-top drag, causing Haruhi to roll around screaming with laughter). But there are some more touching moments as well, such as Tamaki comforting Haruhi when she's frightened by a thunderstorm, or the flashback episodes where we see how Tamaki befriended the icy Kyoya or the manipulative twins.

But the best part of the show is the characters -- Haruhi is a likably down-to-earth, sensible "commoner" who often seems weirded out by the antics of the megarich teens of Ouran. But she's slowly charmed by Tamaki, a sweet but not-very-bright young man who seems pretty confused about his romantic feelings. You end up liking Tamaki even better when you find out the truth about his family, and what a kind person he is.

And the rest of the cast is lots of fun as well: Hunny's cutesiness is a little annoying, but it's fun to see him kicking the collective backsides of a secret police force. Mori is cool (if underdeveloped), Kyoya is a delightful mix of insecurity and Machievellian scheming, and the twins are simply hilarious (especially since their "theme" is twincest).

"Ouran High School Host Club: The Complete Series" is a delightful, lovable anime series, and leaves you desperately wishing it would never end. Charming, fluffy and fun.

Ouran High School Host Club: The Complete Series [Blu-ray] Overview

Now available for the first time in blu-ray!

Ouran Academy: An institution of extravagance and prestige where learning is secondary to luxury. Haruhi began the year as an out of place scholarship student, but she's found new popularity as a member of the Host Club. Playing the part of a sensitive suitor and wooing the ladies of the school has become a full-time job. Of course, now that Tamaki and the other boys can no longer deny the charms of her girly side, life feels more like a storybook daydream.
