The Fast and the Furious Trilogy (The Fast and the Furious / 2 Fast 2 Furious / The Fast and the Furious: Toyko Drift) [Blu-ray]

The Fast and the Furious Trilogy (The Fast and the Furious / 2 Fast 2 Furious / The Fast and the Furious: Toyko Drift) [Blu-ray] Review

The fast and the Furious Trilogy is one of those series that people try to hide that they like, but the minute someone brings it up they want to be part of the conversation. Altough the first one was great and the second was (I will let you judge) and the third was was cool because it was cool that they introduced the world to drifting, the series has stood the test of time. The new one (aptly named Fast and Furious) brought the series back to wher it belong. Vin Diesel and Paul Walker are awesome and the women are beautiful.

Lennonyc [Blu-ray]

Lennonyc [Blu-ray] Review

Lennonyc [Blu-ray] Overview

LENNONYC is the story of one of the most famous and influential artists of the Twentieth Century, and how he found redemption not in the public adoration he craved as a youth, but in the quiet and simple pleasures of fatherhood. And, though he wasn't a typical immigrant, his story is certainly an immigrant's tale. Lennon came to New York City in 1971, seeking what every other immigrant who has washed up on its shores has sought: freedom-the freedom to be himself and not 'Beatle John,' the freedom to love without the overwhelming public scorn he and Yoko had suffered in London, and, simply, the freedom to live a normal life.
LENNONYC tells this story with never before-released in-studio recordings, concert film only recently transferred to HD, and a trove of Lennon/Ono compositions-some in versions previously unheard. It also contains interviews with those closest to Lennon during this period in his life-friend and photographer, Bob Gruen; musical collaborator and drummer, Jim Keltner; May Pang, Lennon's companion during his 'lost weekend;' rock superstar, Elton John; and Jack Douglas, the producer of Double Fantasy. LENNONYC also contains one of the most powerful and emotionally direct interviews Yoko Ono has ever given. No film about John Lennon has ever covered this story with the same breadth and depth as LENNONYC.
As the public turns its attention to what would have been Lennon's 70th birthday and the 30th anniversary of his murder LENNONYC uniquely commemorates the life of one of the most important and influential artists of the Twentieth Century-someone whose life and work is as powerful and relevant today as it has ever been

Personal Effects [Blu-ray]

Personal Effects [Blu-ray] Review

A friend gave me this movie. I didn't know what to expect. I was surprisingly surprised. I think Ashton did a wonderful job. Actually, the whole cast was great. Having lost a family member to a brutal death, I could relate to Ashton's character and felt he expressed my pain perfectly. The exploration of grief from different angles was well written. I hope to see Ashton in more movies where he can show how he has grown as an actor.

Brothers [Blu-ray]

Brothers [Blu-ray] Review

Contrary to what the trailer would have you believe, this is not a modern day, hedonistic Jane Austen novel with love triangles and pseudo-incestuous relationships. Save that garbage for Lifetime and A-Lister female celebrities who either want a time piece under their belt, or think they have the chops to translate a classic piece of chick-lit onto the big screen with more than a modicum of success. Looking at you, Kate Winslet. Instead, this movie instantly gains a star when it avoids the cheap and the obvious, delving into the rampant Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) cases resulting from wars in the Middle East rather than an actual love triangle. Allowing the superb cast to channel emotions ranging from joy to despair, elation to psychosis, was a much wiser choice.

Just as Jarhead Captain Sam Hill (Tobey Maguire) is strapping on his LPCs and heading out to BFE, Afghanistan where he'll get sleepless nights in the sandbox and the 4 fingers of death for dinner, leaving his beautiful wife Grace (Natalie Portman) and their two daughters behind, bidding his Marine Corp father an Alpha Mike Foxtrot, his soup sandwich brother Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal) is being released from prison for an undisclosed crime.

All is well in the MMFD until Hill's chopper flight goes Tango Uniform, hit by enemy fire. Thrown to his fourth point of contact with no time to pop smoke, his situation is a FUBAR Charlie Foxtrot and he's taken prisoner by the Taliban. Captured with a Private, Cpt. Hill reminds the lower enlisted Marine to remain disciplined and strong. He is assumed dead, and his family is informed of the travesty. Before the dress blues have left the driveway, Sam's brother Blue Falcons him back home, playing the role of Jodie with Grace. When he's rescued, however, the movie heats up as PTSD hinders the reacclimation with his family and causes him to engage in the mental goat rope of infidelitous thoughts.

Military lingo aside, this is a very compelling film dealing with timely subject matter. The three leads are wonderful, but Tobey Maguire really stretches his legs in his role as a traumatized Marine back from war. When he begins to go bug-eyed - aided by his gaunt appearance - it's genuinely disturbing. The pacing away from war is a little slow but manageable.

I give very high praise and recommendation for director Jim Sheridan's work in this film. He made the right choices, let the stars dominate the screen, and created a wonderful, albeit imbalanced movie.

Brothers [Blu-ray] Overview

Captain Sam Cahill (Maguire) is embarking on his fourth tour of duty, leaving behind his beloved wife (Portman) and two daughters. When Sam’s Blackhawk helicopter is shot down in the mountains of Afghanistan, the worst is presumed, leaving an enormous void in the family. Despite a dark history, Sam’s charismatic younger brother Tommy (Gyllenhaal) steps in to fill the family void.

Brothers [Blu-ray] Specifications

Screenwriter David Benioff (The 25th Hour) didn't have to do much to relocate Brothers from Denmark to America. The story remains the same: Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire) loves his family, but he's equally devoted to his career. Just as his ne'er-do-well brother, Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal), exits prison, where he did time for robbery, the Marines deploy Sam to Afghanistan. Tommy starts looking in on his wary sister-in-law, Grace (Natalie Portman), but then Sam's helicopter crashes in the mountains, and the military informs Grace that her husband has died. Unbeknownst to the Cahill clan, the Taliban has taken Sam hostage and tortures him to elicit information. Sam resists, but his colleague caves, leading to an unthinkable act. Back in New Mexico, Grace and Tommy grow closer, stopping just short of a full-blown affair (in Susanne Bier's original, they take the plunge). Even Tommy's disapproving Vietnam vet father, Hank (Sam Shepard), sees his son in a new light after Tommy renovates Grace's kitchen. But when Sam is rescued by his company, he returns a broken man and is convinced that his wife has fallen in love with his brother. Even his daughters are afraid of him (Bailee Madison impresses as the eldest). As in Bier's film, Jim Sheridan (In America) elevates redemption and forgiveness over tragedy and loss, and his well-meaning remake gets off to a solid start, but it loses steam by the end. Brothers offers a compelling scenario, but the telling is too overstated to capture the full heartbreak of the situation. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Hoosiers DVD + Blu-ray Combo

Hoosiers DVD + Blu-ray Combo Review

It doesn't get more sappy than when one character in this movie says, "Let's win this one for all the small schools who never had a chance to get here." But what of it? I am feeling mighty sentimental today, just the right mood to be in when talking about HOOSIERS, my favorite basketball movie right up until WHITE MEN CAN'T JUMP came along. HOOSIERS is one of those movies that, whenever it comes across the television set, I'm compelled to stop and watch the thing There's a reason HOOSIERS placed fourth in the AFI's list of all-time best sports movies.

The story is based on real life events, tweaked for better viewing consumption. Instead of 1954, the film is set in 1951 in the fictional town of Hickory, Indiana. If you're any sort of basketball enthusiast, then you're already clued in that Indiana absolutely reveres its basketball, treats it like religion. Somewhere in Indiana, there's probably an altar dedicated to Steve Alford. Gene Hackman has one of his most ferocious and best ever roles in the highly volatile former college basketball coach Normal Dale. Down to his last chance, Coach Dale drives up to basketball-mad Hickory in 1951 and right away shifts the status quo with his ornery ways (some say, big city ways). Hickory is a tiny town, the high school basketball team comprising only six players and so we immediately regard the Hickory Huskers as extreme long shots.

Everything works with this movie, everything. The story is warm and humorous. The acting is marvelous from Hackman on down. Dennis Hopper as the town drunk who becomes the reluctant assistant coach gets nominated for an Oscar. In a slow burn romance, Barbara Hershey plays the frosty schoolteacher whom Hackman eventually charms (or wears down, anyway). Maris Valainis - who was never much heard from again after this - breathes life and even this mythical aura into Jimmy Chitwood, the boy with few words and the supremely sweet shot. HOOSIERS is a shot of nostalgia, and because it evokes a more innocent era, it could get away with the sentimental stuff. It's cliched now, but those shots of the town faithfully traveling on the road with the team, that was really good.

And perhaps no one moment defines this underdog feel so much as that one which had Ollie, the littlest guy on the team, sinking those two charity shots or, as I like to call it, the Sasha Vujajic Game 7 moment. It's set in stone that the Hickory Huskers will somehow reach the championship game, no surprises there. But the movie is so good at manipulating you that you can't help but get revved up when it all comes down to that last shot for the win, but even before that when, in that tense time out huddle, Jimmy Chitwood looks at the coach and calmly tells him: "I'll make it." In the best tradition of classic feel-good movies, you realize that your strings are being pulled. But that doesn't matter.

Hoosiers DVD + Blu-ray Combo Overview

Studio: Tcfhe/mgm Release Date: 04/06/2010 Rating: R

Hoosiers DVD + Blu-ray Combo Specifications

One of the most rousingly enjoyable sports movies ever made, this small-town drama tells the story of the Hickory Huskers, an underdog basketball team from a tiny Indiana high school that makes it all the way to the state championship tournament. It's a familiar story, but sensitive direction and a splendid screenplay helped make this one of the best films of 1986, highlighted by the superb performances of Gene Hackman as the Huskers' coach, and Oscar nominee Dennis Hopper as the alcoholic father of one of the team's key players. As the drama unfolds we come to realize that many of the characters (including Barbara Hershey as a schoolteacher with whom Hackman falls in love) are recovering from disappointing setbacks, and this depth of character is what makes the otherwise conventional basketball story so richly rewarding. Like Rocky, Rudy, and Breaking Away, this is a quintessentially American movie about beating the odds and rising above one's own limitations. Just try to watch it without cheering! --Jeff Shannon

Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series (with Collectible Cylon) [Blu-ray]

Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series (with Collectible Cylon) [Blu-ray] Review

Since the boxed (not the crappy package with the free toy) Blu Ray set was going for less than the complete set in DVD, I finally decided to upgrade. And boy, am I glad I did. Yes, it's shaky, dark and grainy: it was shot that way, but the space battle scenes are beautiful and the sound is clear and immersive. I haven't watched all yet (just on the third disc), but so far the only problem I've found is a small glitch that causes the last 3 seconds of a deleted scene to loop. I don't know if I'll get a replacement since the rest plays perfectly.

Since this series wasn't meant to look pristine I doubt I'd upgrade from DVD, but if you're buying it for the first time why buy the lower resolution for around the same (or higher) price?

Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series (with Collectible Cylon) [Blu-ray] Overview

Now you can relive every action-packed moment of the epic story that Entertainment Weekly proclaims “Riveting”! Rejoin the fight to save the human race as a small but determined fleet quests for the fabled planet Earth while being hunted by their nemesis, the robot cylons. Steamboat Bill, Jr. [Blu-ray]

Steamboat Bill, Jr. [Blu-ray] Review

Having been a fan of Buster Keaton for almost 40 years, anytime a truly beautiful print of one of his films becomes available is a time to rejoice. Here, we have two different prints of the same film, and both are worth watching. The story about a young man who comes to live with his father-who treats him with disdain because he is not a chip off the old block turns into quite a comedy epic, with some of the most spectacular stunts of Keaton's career (the scene where the wall of a house falls around him is still stunning, especially when you take into account the 2 inches of clearance around him-if it would have wobbled...).

Kino, as usual, has put together a package that rivals their previous one for THE GENERAL, with various music tracks for the film (although I wish they would have included Gaylord Carter's organ score which was on their previous DVD release and is his most majestic score) and extras, including behind-the-scenes photos and recordings of the song "Steamboat Bill" from the early days of recording.

Supposedly a Blu-Ray disc of OUR HOSPITALITY & SHERLOCK, JR. is in the works, and of course we have Kino's new restoration of METROPOLIS to look forward to at the end of the year or the beginning of next, so a tip of the captain's hat to the incredible people and the work they do at that company-keep it coming!

Steamboat Bill, Jr. [Blu-ray] Overview

The last of the independent features made in the prime of Buster Keaton s career, STEAMBOAT BILL, JR. is a large-scale follow-up to The General, substituting a Mississippi paddlewheel for the locomotive, and replacing the spectacle of the Civil War with a catastrophic hurricane. Keaton stars as William Canfield, Jr., a Boston collegian who returns to his deep-southern roots to reunite with his father, a crusty riverboat captain (Ernest Torrence) who is engaged in a bitter rivalry with a riverboat king coincidentally, the father of Willie s sweetheart (Marion Byron). Keaton s athleticism and gift for inventive visual humor are in top form, and the cyclone that devastates a town (and sends houses
literally crashing down around him) is perhaps the most ambitious, awe-inspiring and hilarious slapstick sequence ever created. In the silent era, it was common practice for filmmakers to create two
separate negatives of their films, each comprised of differing takes and camera angles. This definitive Blu-ray edition contains both versions of STEAMBOAT BILL, JR. the Buster Keaton Estate version and the Killiam Shows Archive version each mastered from archival 35mm materials. All new Special Features include: Complete alternate version of Steamboat Bill, Jr., comprised entirely of variant takes and camera angles, Music by The Biograph Players presented in DTS-HD, Master Audio 5.1, Organ score by Lee Erwin, Piano score by William Perry, Documentary on the making of the film, Stills Gallery, Why They Call Him Buster (a montage of pratfalls), and Two vintage recordings of the folk song Steamboat Bill .

Steamboat Bill, Jr. [Blu-ray] Specifications

Buster Keaton stars in the story of a college-educated young man who comes home to help his father work on his Mississippi River steamboat and immediately demonstrates just what a landlubber he is. What's worse, the woman he falls for is the daughter of his father's worst rival, a bullying rich guy who wants to drive Buster's boat out of business. Keaton's slapstick is inspired and precise, particularly during an amazing sequence in which he tries to walk across town during a tornado. Watch in amazement as the front of a building falls on Keaton and he walks away without a scratch. --Marshall Fine

Artie Lange's Beer League [Blu-ray]

Artie Lange's Beer League [Blu-ray] Review

Beer League is an *extremely* vulgar, obnoxious, and inappropriate film. It's completely distasteful, gross, disrespectful of women (rather strongly) and it's just... a film intended for grown men.

You know, people call these kind of films teenage humor, but would YOU want your teenager watching a film where the sexual content is extremely high around every single turn? I know I wouldn't. Because of that, this is a guy movie.

Hey, I'm a guy and I did enjoy the movie, but there's absolutely no way you can deny how incredibly trashy this kind of humor is.

The storyline is about a team of softball players (grown men with no life) saying the most obnoxious things imaginable to each other (including frequent insults towards each other when someone would mess up a play on the field).

What WAS incredibly funny was the character of a mother always appearing RIGHT when her son was ready to have some disgusting fun with his girlfriend, haha.

This film is complete trash, but satisfying enough to watch it with a group of beer-drinkin', Molly Hatchet-jammin' boys.

Artie Lange's Beer League [Blu-ray] Overview

NEW ON BLU-RAY
Artie Lange's BEER LEAGUE
Beer, broads and softball combine with hilarious results in ARTIE LANGE'S BEER LEAGUE, an over-the-top comedy about a group of misfits whose weekly softball games descend more into fights for macho dominance than making home runs. When love enters his life (Cara Buono), it unexpectedly alters Artie's low self-esteem; and the odds for winning--not only the league trophy but a new life--are considerably amped along with the comedy and chaos.
DVD Features include: 145 Minutes of Unrated Bonus Features;Spanish Subtitles; Unrated Commentary with Artie Lange and Frank Sebastiano; Beer Goggles Short; Beer League: Behind the Scenes; Live from CineVegas!;Artie Behind the Scenes of JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE! and THE BEST DAMN SPORTS SHOW; In the Studio with Artie: Jokes and Ringtones; Raw Interviews;Photo Gallery; Closed Captioning.

Artie Lange's Beer League [Blu-ray] Specifications

It's appropriate that this extravaganza of lowbrow cinema had its premiere at the 2006 Cinevegas Film Festival, because what happens in Artie Lange's Beer League should stay in Artie Lange's Beer League. Lange is most recognizable for his stint in the Mad TV ensemble, but probably more idolized by the people who will get wild kicks from his leading man debut as the resident guest-baiter and booze/scatological/flatulence/sex joke expert on Howard Stern's radio show. Those are the same kinds of laughs this movie relies on in telling the wisp of a story about a bunch of New Jersey boneheads whose lives are fulfilled by softball games and the beer-guzzling that goes on before, during, and after. Artie's team is proud to be in the bottom ranks of their league, especially when brawls erupt at games against their slick, archrival team. Artie and the rest of his team know these arrogant jerks in their immaculate black (of course) uniforms are unbeatable, so it's only natural that Artie thinks its easier to just beat the hell out of them. The local cop who's had to deal with both teams finally gets so angry with the escalating brawls that he issues an ultimatum: Whichever team loses the season has to disband and never play on the league again. It's kind of an utterly tasteless version of The Bad News Bears for people who like their movies vulgar, offensive, misogynistic, and often really funny in spite of it all. Some of the subplots and supporting players include Ralph Macchio as one of Artie's childhood friends who's about to get married (cue depraved bachelor party scene with lots of topless babes), Mary Birdsong from Reno 911! as a kooky waitress, and a delightful turn by crusty character actor Seymour Cassel as Artie's teammate Dirt, who may be old but loves booze, fisticuffs, and debauchery as much as anyone. For some reason, Artie's foul-mouthed slobbery attracts a local Jersey girl (Cara Buono), even though he's jobless and still lives with his mom (Laurie Metcalf, who should get some kind of good sport award). The buffoonery doesn't just stop with the movie. There's also more than two hour of bonus material tailored for Artie Lange enthusiasts who probably number more than you'd think -- whether they'd ever admit it or not. --Ted Fry

Outbreak [Blu-ray]

Outbreak [Blu-ray] Review

This is an excellent movie. Watched it when it first came out and still enjoy it, the casting was exceptional. Love Donald Sutherland, Dustin Hoffman and Rene Russo not to mention Morgan Freeman, Cuba Gooding and Kevin Spacey. The storyline is so authentic it can become scary if you think about it.

Outbreak [Blu-ray] Overview

Bluray Disc

Outbreak [Blu-ray] Specifications

When Warner Brothers was unable to secure the rights to Richard Preston's terrifying nonfiction book The Hot Zone (purchased by a rival studio), they took the basic idea of a fatal virus on the loose in the U.S., added Dustin Hoffman and director Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot), and produced an unusual thriller--a surprise hit--called Outbreak. The other picture, slated to star Robert Redford and Jodie Foster, fell through. The premise of Outbreak, which owes something to Elia Kazan's 1950 plague-scare movie, Panic in the Streets, is as terrifying as it is timely. As developers slash their way deeper into the previously unexplored tropical rainforests, they are exposed to radically new forms of life, including diseases, that in these days of commonplace international travel could turn into deadly epidemics almost before we know it. Hoffman's character and his estranged wife (Rene Russo) are disease experts called in to identify the unknown killer, which was carried into the country by an illegally smuggled monkey. The best sequence shows the disease spreading--through recycled air on a passenger jet, or a sneeze in a crowded movie theater. The final chase is pretty conventional, but the cast is terrific, including Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, Donald Sutherland, Cuba Gooding Jr., J.T. Walsh, and Zakes Mokae. --Jim Emerson

The Mist (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]

The Mist (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray] Review

While "The Mist" has an abundance of "creepy crawlers," especially the skyscraper-sized one that appears near the film's end, it is not those which are the most frightening. That title belongs to Marcia Gay Harden's "Mrs. Carmody," a religious zealot who manages to throw the seeds of mistrust into the grocery store as the assembly tries to map out its strategy to deal with marauding horde outside the doors. The screenwriter crafted a character that truly believes that she is "the messenger of God" and that only she can weed out the true "evil" and she manages to turn others to her side, resulting in brother turning against brother.

The film also allows fair screen time from the "minor" characters, giving each significance and even "noble deaths." Great performances are delivered by star Thomas Jane, Laurie Holden, Frances Sternhagen, Andre Braugher, Ollie Weeks, William Sadler, Sam Witwer, and young Nathan Gamble as Jane's son. In fact, much praise should be given to the remaining cast members who manage to show what happens when "mob mentality" takes over.

Like any good "monster" film, they are kept at a minimum, springing out at the right time to effectively maximize the fear quota.

A plus on the DVD is the inclusion of a B & W cut of the movie, further solidifying its 50's monster movie origins.

The Mist (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray] Feature

  • Format: Subtitled, Widescreen
  • Language: English
  • Aspect Ratio: 2.35:1
  • Run Time: 126 minutes
  • Actors: Andre Braugher, Jeffrey DeMunn, Marcia Gay Harden, Dave Jensen, Brian Libby

The Mist (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray] Overview

From legendary frightmaster Stephen King and 3-time Oscar-nominated director Frank Darabont* (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) comes "one of the scariest King films since Stanley Kubrick's The Shining" (Tasha Robinson, The Onion A.V. Club). After a mysterious mist envelopes a small New England town, a group of locals trapped in a supermarket must battle a siege of otherworldly creatures...and the fears that threaten to tear them apart. Starring Thomas Jane (The Punisher) and Oscar winner* Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River) in one of the year's most talked-about performances, The Mist is riveting, with "tension like an ever-tightening clamp" (Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune).

The Mist (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray] Specifications

Writer-director Frank Darabont, who showcased the softer side of Stephen King in his film adaptations of The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, turns to darker material for The Mist, his latest King adaptation about a group of ordinary townspeople trapped in a supermarket by a mysterious fogbank. Thomas Jane is top-billed as a Maine illustrator who attempts to calm the frightened shoppers, but his job is cut out for him from the get-go, first by the discovery of malevolent creatures lurking in the mist, and then by the mad mutterings of Mrs. Carmody (Marcia Gay Harden), a local eccentric who calls for Old Testament-style sacrifices to appease the supernatural forces. Darabont delivers monster movie thrills and understated social commentary with equal skill, and he's well supported by his cast (which includes Andre Braugher, Toby Jones, William Sadler and Jeffrey DeMunn) and the vivid special effects by KNB EFX, which effectively mix CGI with models and stop-motion animation (the terrific monsters were designed by legendary comic book artist Bernie Wrightson). And for those curious about how the novella's downbeat ending has translated to film, suffice it to say that Darabont's conclusion is at once different and more unsettling than King's. --Paul Gaita

Kevin Smith Box Set (Clerks | Chasing Amy | Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back) [Blu-ray]

Kevin Smith Box Set (Clerks | Chasing Amy | Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back) [Blu-ray] Review

No one's reviewed this beast yet? Really? No one? Okay, here we go. While Clerks may not be the first working class slacker comedy, it's certainly the quintessential film of the genre, not to mention of Kevin Smith's lengthy career. I first saw it when I was about 15 and was turned off by the filthy, over the top sexual discussions, but giggling at the odd ball debates on the nature of customer service and Starwars. Now that I am literally the age of the characters in the film (maybe even a little older), I found myself immersed in the rhythms of the film, barely noticing the bawdy language and demented twists. Single, fresh out of college, and working retail, I more or less live a version of this movie. What I once took to be amateurish (which it is to an extent) I now see was brilliantly conceived and executed. This is simply a must see. While the film was shot on a shoestring budget and is known for its grimy look, the blu ray is surprisingly capable. The HD transfer adds a subtle layer of texture to the film that DVD just can't duplicate. Sure, you may scoff at the ability to see the grain better, but that's exactly what it feels like. Since the original print was blown up from a lower resolution source, there is still a somewhat fuzzy quality to it, but if you have a large enough TV, the improvement is noticeable. And the sound... well there is a little action on the rear speakers, and I could hear all of the dialog... though I'm just sure it has to be basically the same as the DVD. The extras are the real meat and potatoes of the set, including everything from the Clerks X dvd box. As much as I love Smith's movies, I almost find myself enjoying the documentaries produced by Zak Knutson and Joey Figueroa even more. The Snowball Effect is the centerpiece of the bonus content and is a fascinating story of how a convenience store clerk became a successful filmmaker. It's just very well executed story telling on the part of the documentarians (and the anecdotes of Smith himself) and could have easily worked as a theatrical release. The only problem with the extras is that they're all in 480p. This wouldn't be a huge issue, but for some reason my player formats these parts funny, stretching out the picture and distorting the image. I messed around a bit and the best compromise was framing the picture like full screen, but then I was stuck with a tiny image with black bars on all four sides. It's a bit annoying since the Clerks 2 blu ray had EVERYTHING in high definition and looked great. This problem isn't as prevalent on the Oh What a Lovely Tea Party doc, since it was already presented in full frame, but more on that later.

The next film in the set is Chasing Amy. It's a brilliant dissection of the immature male mind and sexual insecurity. Whereas Clerks was more of a document of that kind of guy, Amy cracks open his head and takes a look inside. I always find myself a little lost around the midpoint of the film, as it shifts from one story arc to a completely different one. I just get tired of Holden's issues with women. Taken as a whole, there are really devastatingly powerful emotional threads in this movie and it really works in ways I didn't expect. Since I'd also seen Clerks and Mallrats recently, I also was able to catch a lot of clever Askewiverse references throughout this flick. The real star of the film is the amazing performance from Joey Lauren Adams. Just wow. Chasing Amy is the film that established Smith as permanent fixture in the world of independent film, a statement supported by the (again) wonderful Chop Shop documentary. It covers the trials and tribulations of getting financing at old Miramax, and how to produce a professional quality film on just 0,000. There's interesting deleted scenes, a Q and A, and a really good featurette that reunites Smith and Adams. Again, same weird stretchy problem with the extras. Picture wise, this blu ray film transfer IS a noticeable improvement on standard definition. I've seen this one on TV recently in 480i and can tell you I was pining for a HD edition. Whereas the old version was murky and cheap looking, this transfer just shows how well shot and directed this feature was. There's a still a light grain to it (and there should be), while the HD brings out subtleties of Adams beauty and performance. I really got what could drive Holden to go "chasing amy" for so long. The famous flub of the camera crew reflection is just as clear as ever and it lends the scene a sense of frantic tension of a documentary that has to be experienced to be fully understood. The sound mix is more interesting this time around, with the original theme of the film coming off as quirky and strange as ever.

The final film in the box is Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. I remember first being blown away and exhilarated by this film the first time I saw it. I was literally shaking I was laughing so hard. On second viewing years later, not so much. Don't get me wrong, it's still a lot of fun, it's just that the humor has become really dated and it hasn't held up as well as the other films in the set. There are a lot of jokes about Miramax, a company which for all intents and purposes no longer exists in the form lampooned in the movie. The Affleck-Damon stuff is still good fun, just muted by the direction their careers have taken since then, and their wonderful performances in Smith's previous film, Dogma. This blu ray was easily the best looking of the box, since it had the largest budget and is the most recent. The sound is also quite spectacular at times with music and explosions rocking the subwoofer and surrounds throughout the runtime. Since this was one of the first movies released on the format, however, the edition is fairly barebones. Sony hadn't yet figured out how to make dual layered discs, so the only feature from the DVD retained here is the commentary. And that's it. The commentary unusually has subtitles which is handy.

It's not a complete wash though. On the Clerks bluray, they managed to squeeze Oh What a Lovely Tea Party about the making of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. This doc was not made by Knutson/Figueroa, but rather his friend Malcolm Ingram and Smith's wife Jen Schwalbach. Unlike the usual Smith bonus DVD doc, this one is more raw and unpolished. It took some getting used to, but I felt like for this particular movie that this direction worked better. We aren't taken through a long story of how Smith came up with the idea and how he pitched it and what drugs Mewes was on. Instead, we're shown the actors on the set and the realistic tedium of what filming a movie is really like. Wait around, BS, shoot the scene, mess up, giggle, try again, watch it with the director, giggle some more. There's some interviews with the cast, which are again more straight forward than what we're used to seeing. You can hear Schwalbach ask questions and let the subjects go on and on. It feels more like a real conversation than a professional documentary. Overall, It's a really good bonus that makes getting Jay and Silent Bob on bluray feel less like a rip off. Then again, you do get great picture and sound on that bluray.

Man that's a lot of stuff. I'll be surprised if Amazon let's me post it all. Of all the hours of material contained in the box, here's the stuff I haven't covered (because I haven't watched them yet - probably won't): Clerks 1995 commentary, Clerks First Cut, Clerks first cut 2004 commentary, Chasing Amy 2009 commentary (smodcast 97), and Jay and Silent Bob commentary. As you can see, this is just a mammoth package. If you own all of the editions of these films so far, I'd recommend just picking up Chasing Amy on blu ray. If you're like me and haven't purchased any of these film yet and know you dig Smith's style, then you must get this. If not, your life will be incomplete. The sun will shine less brightly. And you'll probably have a few more hours to engage in social activities. But who needs those anyway?

Kevin Smith Box Set (Clerks | Chasing Amy | Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back) [Blu-ray] Overview

CLERKS is one wild day in the life of a pair of overworked counter jockeys whose razor-sharp wit and on-the-job antics give a whole new meaning to customer service.

CHASING AMY: Filled with Smith's unique ear for dialogue and insight into relationships, CHASING AMY offers a thoughtful, funny look at how perceptions alter lives, and how obsession and self-doubt skew reality.

JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK: Wildly irreverent and packed with stars, including Ben Affleck, Chris Rock, Jason Lee and more, the hilarious conclusion of Jay and Silent Bob's story is big entertainment.

Kevin Smith Box Set (Clerks | Chasing Amy | Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back) [Blu-ray] Specifications

Clerks
Before Kevin Smith became a Hollywood darling with Chasing Amy, a film he wrote and directed, he made this ,000 comedy about real-life experiences working for chump change at a New Jersey convenience store. A rude, foul-mouthed collection of anecdotes about the responsibilities that go with being on the wrong side of the till, the film is also a relationship story that takes some hilarious turns once the lovers start revealing their sexual histories to one another. In the best tradition of first-time, ultra-low budget independent films, Smith uses Clerks as an audition piece, demonstrating that he not only can handle two-character comedy but also has an eye for action--as proven in a smoothly handled rooftop hockey scene. Smith himself appears as a silent figure who hangs out on the fringes of the store's property. --Tom Keogh

Chasing Amy
Writer-director Kevin Smith (Clerks) makes a huge leap in sophistication with this strong story about a comic-book artist (Ben Affleck) who falls in love with a lesbian (Joey Lauren Adams) and actually gets his wish that she love him, too. Their relationship is attacked, however, by his business partner (Jason Lee), who pulls a very unsubtle Iago act to cast doubt over the whole affair. The film has the same sense of insiderness as Clerks--this time, Smith takes us within the arcane, funny world of comic-book cultism--but the themes of jealousy, deceit, and the high price of growing up enough to truly care for someone make this a very satisfying movie. --Tom Keogh

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
With sidesplitting dialogue and rampant profanity, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back reunites Kevin Smith's dynamic duo in supreme lowbrow style. It's the fifth comedy in Smith's celebrated New Jersey "trilogy." Here Quick-Stop potheads Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith) wreak vengeance on Hollywood, where Miramax is making a "Bluntman & Chronic" feature inspired by J. and S.B., but without their permission. En route from Jersey to La La Land, Jay and his "hetero life mate" encounter sexy jewel thieves (including the delightful Shannon Elizabeth), a precocious orangutan, a dimwit wildlife marshal (Will Ferrell), and a nonstop parade of in-jokes, harmless (yet controversial) gay jokes, and splendid celebrity cameos. While gently biting the Miramax hand that feeds him, and paying affectionate homage to the Star Wars saga, Smith sheds all inhibitions to give Jay and Silent Bob a stellar sendoff that's nasty, sassy, and undeniably hilarious. --Jeff Shannon

28 Weeks Later [Blu-ray]

28 Weeks Later [Blu-ray] Review

28 Weeks Later does a few things. It does justice to the first film, it excells in style and cinematography, and it compells with brilliant storytelling. What 28 Weeks Later failed to do was give us truly memorable scenes and action bits worth playing over again. While I feel that the film is much better than most horror sequels these days, I wanted so much more out of this film that displayed so much potential.

Like I said, the film looks amazing. The cinematography and lighting are remarkable. I hate all these pictures these days that involve too many close-ups. This movie took everything wide and beautiful. It's remarkable for its look. That being the most significant thing about the film, the second most would be the story. I enjoyed how it felt original and mysterious. The family's story was effective and the writer inserted no cliche's. Also, the performances were great. Seeing Jeremy Renner pre-Hurt Locker was great.

The few problems I have with the movie do not ruin it, but rather just make the film less memorable. Aside from some shots of the infected father, there's nothing about this movie that I look back and think "That was awesome." 28 Days Later had a few good "wow" points that I can recall off the top of my head. The major problem with this film, is that there is no scene that I instantly remember and engage with. I loved the baseball bat scene of 28 days later and its following ending fight sequence. Really the only thing that was really cool about this one was the "sniper-bait" scene with the kid and Jeremey Renner. The helicopter scene was underdone, in my opinion. My only other problem was its sound editing. The first scene was WAY TOO QUIET!!!!As well as some others.

Other than the fact that 28 Weeks Later is somewhat unexciting, the story and style are equally as beautiful. It's a blast to look at. The only thing I would have asked for was a stronger element of action. Certain horror films, such as the recent Hills Have Eyes, are amazing for they're intense fight scenes. Have some infected duke it out with humans in a well choreographed environment and we're due for a classic. To conclude, 28 Weeks Later certainly does justice to the first film, but it does not do justice to its own potential. It had the tools to be groundbreaking.

28 Weeks Later [Blu-ray] Overview

28 WEEKS LATER is sequel to the successful 28 Days Later.

The film pick up six months after the Rage virus has spread throughout the city of London. The United States Army has restored order and is repopulating the quarantined city, when a carrier of the Rage virus enters London and unknowingly re-ignites the spread of the deadly infection, wreaking havoc on the entire population. The virus is not yet dead, and this time it's more dangerous than ever!!

28 Weeks Later [Blu-ray] Specifications

As an exercise in pure, unadulterated terror, 28 Weeks Later is a worthy follow-up to its acclaimed predecessor, 28 Days Later. In this ultraviolent sequel from Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (hired on the strength of his 2001 thriller Intacto), over six months have passed since the first film's apocalyptic vision of London overrun by infectious, plague-ridden zombies. Just when it seems the "rage virus" has been fully contained, and London is in the process of slowly recovering, an extremely unfortunate couple (Robert Carlyle, Catherine McCormack) is attacked by a small band of rampaging "ragers," and the cowardly husband escapes while his wife is attacked and presumably infected. Their surviving children (Imogen Poots, Mackintosh Muggleton) fall under the protection of a U.S. Army sharpshooter (Jeremy Renner), but nobody's safe for long as 28 Weeks Later goes into action-packed overdrive, with scene after blood-gushing scene of carnage and decimation. The film's visuals follow the look established in 28 Days Later, this time with bigger and better scenes of a nearly abandoned London on the brink of utter destruction. The military subplot gets a bold assist from Harold Perrineau (as a daring helicopter pilot) and Idris Elba (in a too-brief role as the military commander), and their firepower--not to mention the efficient lethality of helicopter blades--turns 28 Weeks Later into a nonstop bloodbath that's way too intense for younger viewers and guaranteed to leave hardcore horror fans gruesomely satisfied. That's all there is to it--this film is almost plotless and dialogue is minimal throughout--but as a truly terrifying vision of survival amidst chaos, 28 Weeks Later honors its origins and qualifies as a solid double-feature with Children of Men. Could there be another sequel? Thanks to the "chunnel," the answer in this case is definitely oui. --Jeff Shannon

Hellboy (Director's Cut) [Blu-ray]

Hellboy (Director's Cut) [Blu-ray] Review

There's been quite a few comic book adaptations being done, although that I haven't read any of the comics before watching the movies. Though that of the ones that I've seen some seem to be alright, good, and some I think are great without having any of the comics to know anything about the stuff prior to watching the movie. While I have to say that some comic based movies like Spider Man, or even X-Men, I've come to enjoy watching them, then when I went about watching Hellboy, I found another one that I can go about enjoy watching without reading the comic. I have to say that this movie reminds me of how the Spider Man movies were approached, but this movie feels darker than that of those movies and the writing seems to be just on par with those movies, maybe even better.

When it comes to the use of CGI, in movies, there are some that I seen that know how to use it properly while others it don't turn out so good. With Hellboy, they knew how to make good use of it and turns out rather good in the end. As for the acting in the movie I felt that each of the actors done everything to give their characters the feel that they are in the comics. With the 3-Disc set, I like all the special features that have been packed in this set, everything from the trailers & tv spots to even about a 2 ½ hour documentary on how the movie went about from the comics to the big screen. Seeing that, I never realized how much stuff went about in the making of this movie and know that these movies aren't easy to make. Overall I give it 5 stars out of 5.

Hellboy (Director's Cut) [Blu-ray] Overview

From visionary writer/director Guillermo del Toro (director of Blade II, The Devil's Backbone) comes Hellboy, a supernatural action adventure based on Mike Mignola's popular Dark Horse Comics series of the same name. Born in the flames of hell and brought to Earth as an infant to perpetrate evil, Hellboy (Ron Perlman) was rescued from sinister forces by the benevolent Dr. Broom (John Hurt), who raised him to be a hero. In Dr. Broom's secret Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, Hellboy creates an unlikely family consisting of the telepathic "Mer-Man" Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) and Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), the woman he loves who can control fire. Hidden from the very society that theyprotect, they stand as the key line of defense against an evil madman who seeks to reclaim Hellboy to the dark side and use his powers to destroy mankind.

Hellboy (Director's Cut) [Blu-ray] Specifications

In the ongoing deluge of comic-book adaptations, Hellboy ranks well above average. Having turned down an offer to helm Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in favor of bringing Hellboy's origin story to the big screen, the gifted Mexican director Guillermo del Toro compensates for the excesses of Blade II with a moodily effective, consistently entertaining action-packed fantasy, beginning in 1944 when the mad monk Rasputin--in cahoots with occult-buff Hitler and his Nazi thugs--opens a transdimensional portal through which a baby demon emerges, capable of destroying the world with his powers. Instead, the aptly named Hellboy is raised by the benevolent Prof. Bloom, founder of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, whose allied forces enlist the adult Hellboy (Ron Perlman, perfectly cast) to battle evil at every turn. While nursing a melancholy love for the comely firestarter Liz (Selma Blair), Hellboy files his demonic horns ("to fit in," says Bloom) and wreaks havoc on the bad guys. The action is occasionally routine (the movie suffers when compared to the similar X-Men blockbusters), but del Toro and Perlman have honored Mike Mignola's original Dark Horse comics with a lavish and loyal interpretation, retaining the amusing and sympathetic quirks of character that made the comic-book Hellboy a pop-culture original. He's red as a lobster, puffs stogies like Groucho Marx, and fights the good fight with a kind but troubled heart. What's not to like? --Jeff Shannon

Immortal Beloved [Blu-ray]

Immortal Beloved [Blu-ray] Review

*SPOILER (Jump to the numbers at the bottom of this review if you don't want to know who is Beethoven's Immortal Beloved) A wonderful movie that uses music as much as acting to portrait Beethoven. Director and writer Bernard Rose did a tremendous job using music as a co-star for this wonderful movie. While it is true, there were letters found made out to "Immortal Beloved" written by Beethoven, many scholars believe the woman Beethoven refers to is not even in this movie, but is another married woman named Antonie von Birkenstock Brentano. She was married very young to an older man in an arranged marriage. None the less, this is an enthralling movie that goes into many details of Beethoven's adult life until his death. Oldman is excellent in his role, and does a wonderful job portraying a deaf man holding a secret love for his younger brother's wife. While the identity of Beethoven's Immortal Beloved may incorrect in the movie, other aspects of his life are accurately presented by writer/director Rose who thoroughly researched the film's subject prior to writing the screenplay. Among the themes covered is Beethoven's apparent rudeness, explained here as being due to his deafness, his disdain for both his contemporary musicians and aristocracy as well as his initial like of Napolean(until he declared himself Emperor). His struggle to obtain custody of his nephew Karl as well as his trying to get Karl to follow in his footsteps while Karl only wants to be a soldier is a main theme. All of the music in the film, is very aptly matched to each scene. This is noted by several of the actors on the included featurette. The visuals, locations and costumes are beautiful and span the time of Beethoven being a young man until the time of his death. The film is shot mostly in Prague, a city that pretty much looks like it did 300 years ago. The films is also bright and well lit, so these wonderful scenes can be enjoyed in all their Blu-Ray high definition glory. A wonderful movie for those that enjoy history and music. Note there is some language and nudity.

Immortal Beloved [Blu-ray] Overview

COLLEGE PROFESSOR BEGINS TO SUSPECT THAT HIS NEIGHBOUR IS ATERRORIST.

Immortal Beloved [Blu-ray] Specifications

This thrilling, speculative story about the mystery woman whom Ludwig van Beethoven once identified in a letter as his "immortal beloved" is directed by Bernard Rose (Paperhouse). Gary Oldman plays the deaf genius with tragic brutality in a series of flashbacks that arise during a connect-the-dots investigation by Beethoven's secretary (Jeroen Krabbé), who is looking into the composer's love affairs to ascertain who held the key to his heart. Rose arrives at a moving if imperfect portrait of a complicated artist, and he pays gorgeous tribute to Beethoven's stolen innocence in childhood. (You may never hear the Ninth Symphony again without thinking of Rose's beautiful image of young Ludwig immersed in cosmic rapture.) Produced by Mel Gibson's company, Icon. --Tom Keogh

The Green Mile (Blu-ray Book)

The Green Mile (Blu-ray Book) Review

One of Tom Hanks finest roles as the head supervisor of E block, known as the green mile, the death row of an Alabaman prison. The Green Mile is a powerful and moving story of a simple-minded, physically huge black man charged with the brutal rape and murder of twin eight year old girls in the deep south of America in 1932. Sent to death row of Cold Mountain Penitentiary he increasingly convinces the supervising wardens not only of his possible innocence but of his extraordinary abilities that make him a gift from God. Some extraordinary supporting performances make this one of the finest movies of the last decade, David Morse as 'Brutal' Howell a gentle giant, Doug Hutchinson as the immature, power crazed Percy Whetmore, Sam Rockwell as the truly loathsome often puerile Wild Bill Wharton and of course Michael Clark Duncan as the remarkable John Coffey.

The Green Mile (Blu-ray Book) Overview

When John Coffey arrives on the death row cellblock at Cold Mountain Penitentiary, the prison guards discover that he has mysterious powers hidden wit

The Green Mile (Blu-ray Book) Specifications

"The book was better" has been the complaint of many a reader since the invention of movies. Frank Darabont's second adaptation of a Stephen King prison drama (The Shawshank Redemption was the first) is a very faithful adaptation of King's serial novel. In the middle of the Depression, Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) runs death row at Cold Mountain Penitentiary. Into this dreary world walks a mammoth prisoner, John Coffey (Michael Duncan) who, very slowly, reveals a special gift that will change the men working and dying (in the electric chair, masterfully and grippingly staged) on the mile . As with King's book, Darabont takes plenty of time to show us Edgecomb's world before delving into John Coffey's mystery. With Darabont's superior storytelling abilities, his touch for perfect casting, and a leisurely 188-minute running time, his movie brings to life nearly every character and scene from the novel. Darabont even improves the novel's two endings, creating a more emotionally satisfying experience. The running time may try patience, but those who want a story, as opposed to quick-fix entertainment, will be rewarded by this finely tailored tale. --Doug Thomas

Napoleon Dynamite DVD + Blu-ray Combo Review

this is a movie about extremely odd people who are very aware of said weirdness but do not care if people hate them, do not understand them, they are gonna be who they are and that is that. The moon boots, fanny packs, iron on t shirt decals, all reminded me of my childhood ( I had some of the clothes deb wore when I was a kid and my cousin had a fro like napoleons in the 80's and the shirts too. Come to think of it, he kind of looked like napoleon..... I am not kidding. Also if you grew up in the sticks and went to a small school ,and had really strange friends and family you will laugh your ass off. I love Napoleon's weird job with the farmer and his fake girlfriend and his fondness for tator tots. :)

TÝR - Hold The Heathen Hammer High (Official)

The TYR Vikings have completed their latest work under the glow of the North Star. On "By the Light of the Northern Star" the Faroese band delivers catchy yet technically brilliant tracks, and once again demonstrates how to impressively unite the contemporary present with the mythological past. Pushing Daisies: The Complete Second Season [Blu-ray]

Pushing Daisies: The Complete Second Season [Blu-ray] Review

I showed my friend this show. I put it in and we were a little tipsy and we started watching some random episode. And she was like, "what is this? This isn't a real show. How could something THIS BEAUTIFUL be on TV?" And I said, well they cancelled it so it's not on TV anymore. And she almost cried. She DIDNT BELIEVE THIS WAS A TV SHOW, because the set design, costumes, story line, cinematography BLEW HER AWAY. It was so beautiful there were no words. It was so smart and so touching and funny! The first time I saw this show, I just knew it was ME. It was something I would want to make myself, be a part of, or just watch constantly. It's just so original and beautiful... ABC should be ASHAMED they let this go. And SOMEONE should have picked it up. If you haven't seen it, you should.

Pushing Daisies: The Complete Second Season [Blu-ray] Specifications

The second season of Pushing Daisies became, unfortunately, its last--abruptly wrapping one of the most beautiful and unusual love stories ever told on TV. Farewell to Ned (Lee Pace), the handsome piemaker who can restore the dead with one touch (and un-restore them with another, or else end another life in exchange). Farewell to Chuck (Anna Friel), his true love, brought back to life by Ned and therefore forever untouchable by him again. Farewell to Olive (Kristin Chenoweth), the pixie who pines for our piemaker, and also to Emerson (Chi McBride), the P.I. who partners with Ned (and Chuck and Olive) to solve murders with inside information from the briefly revived. But what a memorable sendoff this second season is: starting with bees gone wild and a shirtless Ned, paying homage to Pete's Dragon in one lighthouse-centric episode, and ending with some measure of closure that comes in a 13th-episode, "we know we're canceled" rush. Like that finale, the season is not always as fully realized as its rich fairytale world, yet it still achieves genuine joy and longing. In many ways, it is a season of separation, with Olive off to a nunnery and Chuck out of Ned's apartment (for a little while, at least). Olive and Ned get to explore their potential romance, while Chuck gets some unexpected family time. This set contains several featurettes, most notably a celebration of the show's music (a character all its own) and series creator Bryan Fuller, who also brought us Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, and some of Heroes' best episodes. ("I never know what he's going to do, and I love that," says Chenoweth.) There's also a piece on what it takes to create the colorful corpses Ned brings to life as well as the technical challenge of creating a computer-generated rhino, but the real magic of this show comes from the heart. --Stephanie Reid-Simons

Ray Harryhausen Collection (+ BD Live) (20 Million Miles to Earth, Earth vs. Flying Saucers, It Came from Beneath the Sea, 7th Voyage of Sinbad) [Blu-ray]

Ray Harryhausen Collection (+ BD Live) (20 Million Miles to Earth, Earth vs. Flying Saucers, It Came from Beneath the Sea, 7th Voyage of Sinbad) [Blu-ray] Review

This is a great set of movies that have never looked better.
I really am grateful for the colorized versions of these classic
sci fi movies from the age of stop motion animation mixed with live people. These movies were always alot of fun to watch and now they look really good with fine remastering. Although this is not going to look like a more recent movie looks on blu ray. As the previous reviewers said it is not a good thing that the previously available '20 million
miles to earth" is on this set too. As many of us bought that one already; a different movie should have been included. Among the films here the weakest is 'it came from beneath the sea" but that doesn't mean that it's a bad movie at all. These movies were top notch for their day and still remain works of art due to the masterful animation techniques of Ray Harryhausen. You don't have to be from the past to enjoy earlier movies with their non computerized effects as these movies were top notch
sci fi flicks from their era. If you can relate to this fact and not act like a snob who complains about the not realistic effects by todays standards you can sit back and let the fun begin.

Ray Harryhausen Collection (+ BD Live) (20 Million Miles to Earth, Earth vs. Flying Saucers, It Came from Beneath the Sea, 7th Voyage of Sinbad) [Blu-ray] Overview

20 Million Miles to Earth
When an American spaceship crash-lands off the coast of Sicily, a rescue team discovers that the crew has brought back a gelatinous mass that soon hatches and evolves into a strange bi-ped creature which increases in size rapidly. Soon 20-feet tall, the creature rampages through Rome before being destroyed as it seeks refuge in the Colosseum.

The 7th Voyage of Sinbad
It's an incredible cinematic adventure as the legendary Sinbad sets off on a dangerous journey to the mysterious Island of Colossus. His quest is to break the spell cast over his beloved princess by a diabolical magician. But before he can save her, Sinbad must battle an awesome collection of mythical monsters, the man-eating Cyclops, a saber-wielding skeleton, a ferocious two-headed bird called the Roc and a fire-breathing dragon. Starring Kerwin Mathews, Kathryn Grant, Torin Thatcher and highlighted by the stunning visual effects mastery of Ray Harryhausen. Now in a pristine, hi-definition transfer that captures the magic of Harryhausen's "eye-popping" special effects in dazzling Technicolor.

It Came from Beneath the Sea
A giant stop-motion-animated octopus (with six arms) attacks San Francisco. A pair of scientists and a nuclear sub captain try to stop it before it tears down the Golden Gate Bridge.

Earth vs. the Flying Saucers While driving through the desert with his wife Carol Marvin to a military base to send the eleventh rocket to the orbit of Earth for helping the exploration of the outer space in the Operation Sky Hook, Dr. Russell A. Marvin and Carol see a flying saucer and accidentally records a message in their tape recorder. Once in the base, Dr. Russell is informed by his father-in-law and general that the ten first satellites had mysteriously felt on Earth. When Dr. Russell decodes the message, he encounters the aliens that ask him to schedule a meeting with the leaders of Earth in Washington in 56 days with the intention to invade Earth without panicking the population. Dr. Russell develops an anti-magnetic weapon that becomes that last hope of human race against the hostile aliens.
