Easy Rider [Blu-ray]
Easy Rider [Blu-ray] Review
Dennis Hopper's recent passing was the final straw in a decades-old interest in seeing this film. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was blown away by this film. We all know the story - a couple of hippie bikers ride out on a west-to-east cross-country tour to retire in Florida after a lucrative drug deal. Along the way, they run into about every permutation of hippie life in the 1960s - commune livers, idealist back-to-earthers, heavy druggers, free-lovers and the like. And they also run into a not-so-nice slice of "regular" America as well. Racists, hippy-haters, long-hair loathers, corrupt cops, prostitutes and swamp dwellers round out what passes for normal in the movie's vision of America.
What amazed me about the film is that it worked as an insightful allegory of the path of the hippy movement - while the hippy movement was in full swing. The film was shot in early 1968 - before the assassinations of MLK and Bobby, the Chicago riots and the election of Richard Nixon had soured the counterculture. So it was wild to see the film suggest the fatuity of the movement, its self-contradictions (back to Nature + smoke/drink/pill-pop your brains out) and its eventual rejection by society at large.
Great performances by the stars. Peter Fonda was the suave and mellow side of the youth culture. Decked in a leather jacket emblazoned with an American flag, he was the naïve intellectual, trying everything and finding everything to be interesting and acceptable. Dennis Hopper was the movement's unthinking, manic side - just looking for the next high, the next lay, the next thrill. Jack Nicholson was the film's tragic, realistic voice. With one world in the straight world and one in the wild world of Fonda and Hopper, he was able to see dangers that the other two were oblivious to.
The 35th anniversary edition is one of the very few movies whose "making of" segments were worth watching. Using interviews with Fonda, Hopper and others, it tells the story of the disarray of filming the movie and the struggle to get it on screen. Hopper's original cut came in at a mind-bending 3-1/2 hours long. Luckily, wiser hands wrested editorial control from him and gave us the masterpiece we have now.
"Easy Rider" - a great film, a fine period piece and an extraordinary commentary on a lost generation of seekers and dreamers.
Easy Rider [Blu-ray] Overview
Academy Award winner Jack Nicholson (Best Actor, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, 1975) stars with Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper (who also directs) in this unconventional classic which Time Magazine hails as "one of the ten most important pictures of the decade." Experience the real, uncensored '60s counterculture in this compelling mixture of drugs, sex, and armchair politics. In the role that catapulted him to stardom, Jack Nicholson portrays an alcoholic attorney who hooks up with two part-time, drug-dealing motorcyclists (Fonda and Hopper) in search of their "American Dream." Heading from California to New Orleans, they sample the highs and lows of America the beautiful in a stoned-out quest for life's true meaning. Nominated for an Academy Award (1969) for Best Screenplay (written by Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Terry Southern), Easy Rider continues to touch a chord with audiences of all ages.
Easy Rider [Blu-ray] Specifications
This box-office hit from 1969 is an important pioneer of the American independent cinema movement, and a generational touchstone to boot. Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper play hippie motorcyclists crossing the Southwest and encountering a crazy quilt of good and bad people. Jack Nicholson turns up in a significant role as an attorney who joins their quest for awhile and articulates society's problem with freedom as Fonda's and Hopper's characters embody it. Hopper directed, essentially bringing the no-frills filmmaking methods of legendary, drive-in movie producer Roger Corman (The Little Shop of Horrors) to a serious feature for the mainstream. The film can't help but look a bit dated now (a psychedelic sequence toward the end particularly doesn't hold up well), but it retains its original power, sense of daring, and epochal impact. --Tom Keogh

From A Place Of Darkness [Blu-ray]
From A Place Of Darkness [Blu-ray] Review
This is a fascinating sci-fi fast-moving and chilling thriller. Every moment takes a turn and you never know where you will end up.
From A Place Of Darkness [Blu-ray] Overview
There can be a fine line between good and evil. Documentary filmmaker, Miles Cody, ends up crossing that line when he becomes obsessed with his subject: the King of Snuff Films and delves into a world of nudity, forbidden sex and...VIOLENT CLIMAXES. Miles soon discovers the ghosts of those films have returned to warn him...or lure him into...a place of darkness. A disturbingly erotic thriller about taboo sex...and murder.

The House Bunny (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray]
The House Bunny (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray] Review
I bought this film for my wife, as it seemed to position itself as a chick flick (I assumed there would be enough content to keep my interest as we watched it). As it was, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is smart, funny, and a little deeper than its title might suggest. The blu-ray image was superb - as good as any I have seen. The premise of the film revolves around a Playboy bunny leaving the mansion and becoming the House Mother to a small group of apparently helpless and unpopular girls. If they don't get more pledges to their house soon, then their house is history. Enter the House Bunny, who gives them a makeover. So far, so predictable. However, this is where the film turns into something more interesting, as the house girls turn increasingly bitchy and our heroine is summoned back to the mansion to fulfil her dream of being a Playmate. Will she leave her house to follow her own dreams and, if she does, will they get the pledges they need? Watch it and find out. Oh, and my wife would never forgive me if I didn't mention the love story that is also integral to the film - the will she or won't she routine. The film left me with the intended feel good factor and a deeper appreciation of all things Playboy - Heff is a lucky guy - but this is a chick flick so I probably can't say that.
The House Bunny (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray] Overview
Ex-Playboy playmate takes job as sorority house mom.
The House Bunny (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray] Specifications
"I'm an expert in parties and boys. I'm a Bunny! Men write to me from prison--sometimes in their own blood!" So declares ex-Playboy Bunny Shelley, tossed out of the Mansion by a rival for her advanced age (27--"59 in bunny years," she's told). As played by the utterly fearless and appealing Anna Faris, Shelley becomes an unlikely post-feminist heroine, who finds a great use for her not-too-considerable expertise: being sexy. With nowhere else to live, Shelley finds herself as the house mother for a dying sorority, the Zetas, who are the audience for the rallying cry above. And the slightly misfit sisters, though wary, end up giving Shelley a sisterhood she could never have built back at the Grotto. To help build up the sorority, Shelley gives the young women her own peculiar tutorials in charm school--helping them raise their campus profile and recruit new pledges in the process. "When I'm done, every girl on campus will want to pledge Zeta!" Ignore her at your peril, girls. If the formula is a bit predictable, the pace is lively and the cast, headed by the wide-eyed Faris, is aces. American Idol contestant Katharine McPhee is a natural on camera, as is Rumer Willis, daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis. The supporting cast includes the capable Colin Hanks and Beverly D'Angelo, and a bit too much screen time for the real-life Hugh Hefner, who maybe should have stayed on the set of The Girls Next Door. Still, Faris channels the cheerful, girly determination of Reese Witherspoon's Elle Woods--no surprise since The House Bunny was cowritten by Kirsten Smith, who wrote Legally Blonde. Fans of silly romances, hop to it.--A.T. Hurley

Riverworld [Blu-ray] Review
I enjoyed the film so freaking much. The first part of it was a bit weird, unusual, but when it got to the second part I understood how much I enjoy the movie. I didnt want to go anywhere else just to sit and wtch. In my opinion it is a different kind of a movie and the actors are great. I have no complains about nothing. It's a brilliant film. If you want to know it better then watch it yourself. i gave my opinion and I definitely don't care about haters of the movie. And I totally understand a guy who would give it a thouand stars. Im on his side. I just wonder whether there will be or possibly no second riverworld. I honestly think there will be no riverworld 2. But I so loved it. It's an amazing movie.

Splinter [Blu-ray]
Splinter [Blu-ray] Review
SPLINTER is an exciting new take on the NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD scenario, where a group of strangers are forced to defend themselves from an onslaught of deadly creatures by holing up in a remote gas station. The offender this round is a carnivorous fungus that spreads by forming deadly barbs that infect living hosts, bonding with them and turning them into bloodthirsty killers! These infected creatures are truly terrifying, retaining their human form but in twisted and mangled forms that use their broken and contorted limbs as weapons. In the spirit of John Carpenter's THE THING, Toby Wilkins infuses the film with adrenaline-pumping thrills and impressive creature designs to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. In addition to the painful bone-snapping and bloody special effects, SPLINTER also includes a nauseating amputation sequence that can't help but get a reaction. This is one of the few recent creature-features to put a unique twist on familiar genre conventions, with bloody results!

The Transporter [Blu-ray]
The Transporter [Blu-ray] Review
Movie - 4.0
The first time I saw Jason Statham was in The One. I certainly didn't think too much of him at the time because of his character's unstable British/Brooklyn hybrid accent and the lack of action he got in comparison to Jet Li and.. the other Jet Li, and I had no idea he'd transform into the kind of action star he turned out to be afterward. Then came The Transporter, a Eurasian concoction of film-making helmed by great French director Luc Besson and soon-to-be protégés Louis Leterrier and Pierre Morel and choreographed by long-time Hong Kong veteran Cory Yuen, who coincidentally worked with Li (in addition to at least half his other movies) and Statham (for the first time ever) in The One. Whoever came up with the idea to bring Yuen into these movies did a great job. Shallow and simple plot aside, The Transporter and its sequels have never been about the story, but about Frank Martin kicking butt and driving a fast car. The Transporter series is one of my favorite guilty pleasures of escapist entertainment because of the sheer style that accompanies the character of Frank Martin and his exotic adventures. He's calm, collected, where's a snazzy suit, performs some very elegant martial arts moves for a buff British guy, and looks cool doing it all at the same time. It's almost like James Bond and the whole "deadly and debonair gentleman" theme, but without all the espionage, gadgets, and actual attempt at developing a story. In fact, after watching this again just recently I have to say the action and driving sequences become more and more appreciable every time I see them. If not for the PG-13 rating, G.I. Joe-esque "laser bullets," and occasional moments of cheese and campiness, I'd probably be so bold as to consider this "quintessential" for action junkies. However, I think part of the overall fun is its B-movie-ness and its ability to not be taken as seriously as other films in the genre.
Video - 3.5
Presented by Fox in 1080p at an original aspect ratio of 2.35:1 using the now-outdated MPEG-2 codec The Transporter looks pretty decent, all things considered. Colors are vibrant with a reddish tint to skin tones, and film-grain has its fair share of screen time as well throughout a majority of the movie. Detail and textures are relatively fine, though close ups varied between "somewhat crisp" and "really smudgy." Perhaps more disc space or a more advanced video codec could've made for better sharpness and higher bit rates. Black levels and contrast are better than the SD-DVD, but again, being one of the initial BD releases before all the studios got the hang of encoding, much is left to be desired. Artifacts and debris are also present, though it's actually less than what I expected, especially in comparison to other transfers I've seen produced on more recent films.
Audio - 4.5
Although the video is just sub-par, the DTS-HD 5.1 track more than makes up for it. From the very beginning where Frank drives his BMW 735 around Paris we're immersed into the world of The Transporter with a very healthy dose of bass from Stanley Clarke's popping score and a mix of various car, crash, tumble, and clicking sound effects from the chase. Action sequences involving weaponry and fisticuffs do a good job sweeping between the high and low ends, with automatic weapons and crunching sounds being most prominent. Dialogue is clear and legible outside of all the thick accents from the actors and separation of music and sound effects is excellent. The only quality keeping me from calling this a reference track is the somewhat subdued LFE levels. They seem to be more accentuated by the music rather than the action itself, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it takes out just enough oomph to make this worth showcasing. Fortunately, though, the sequels fix that.
Extras - 1.0
Aside from trailers, there's only a commentary track featuring Statham and producer Steven Chasman. It would've been nice to see an interview by Luc Besson or maybe a vignette about the martial arts or driving choreography...
Overall - 3.5
The Transporter is full of testosterone and oozes cool all over the place. For me, it's also the beginning of what would become a pretty good action career for the actor formerly known as the character Bacon. He definitely has what it takes to be that sort of in-your-face, do-it-all action hero. And while the general opinion may be to call this a popcorn movie, I'd actually disagree and say pay more attention to the "craft" of the movie itself. The martial arts, stunt driving, music, and cinematography, while not part of a spectacular story, are actually very well-coordinated by some very talented people. With decent video quality and an excellent lossless track, action fans would do well to break Frank Martin's Rule #3 and take a look at this package.
The Transporter [Blu-ray] Overview
Frank Martin (Jason Statham) is the best as what he does: transporting dangerous or illegal goods with no questions asked. But his last shipment, a beautiful young woman kidnapped by international slave traders, brings deadly complications to his delivery plans. Now Frank must kick into overdrive in a nonstop action-packed fight to save his precious cargo - and his life.
The Transporter [Blu-ray] Specifications
Move over, Vin Diesel, because The Transporter, Hong Kong action veteran Corey Yuen's English-language directorial debut, is revving up to steal your thunder. As the other top-billed action star to emerge in 2002, British hunk Jason Statham--previously seen in Snatch, Ghosts of Mars, and The One--plays a hard-driving courier for well-heeled underworld clients. He follows simple rules: (1) Stick to the deal; (2) Don't ask names; and (3) Don't look in the packages he transports. All's well until he violates rule 3, discovering a Chinese beauty (Qi Shu) in the trunk of his tricked-out BMW, and foiling a deadly plot to smuggle Chinese slaves through the port of Marseilles. The first hour is ass-kickin' fun, and the stuntwork is impressive throughout, even as the plot degenerates into a predictable series of bone-breaking showdowns. Statham boasts an appealing combination of brains and brawn, suggesting the suave versatility of a promising career. Coproduced by action auteur Luc Besson and filmed on dazzling French locations, The Transporter is an action fan's delight. --Jeff Shannon

The Music Man [Blu-ray]
The Music Man [Blu-ray] Review
It seems that no other Broadway musical was ever transferred so intact to the screen with every facet of its production gleaming and gloriously theatrical in its staging. River City, Iowa, of course, looks no more realistic than the Land of Oz, but that's how it should be. It's satire, and thankfully director Morton DaCosta keeps it all in tip-top shape, preserved to play exactly as it did on stage, even with respect to the opening number aboard a train where all the salesmen are singing about a certain scoundrel posing as a professor of music.
Meredith Willson's music never sounded as good and is given expert singing and dancing from ROBERT PRESTON, SHIRLEY JONES, PAUL FORD and HERMIONE GINGOLD in the leads, all of whom are aided and abetted by some of the best singing and dancing you could ask for in a musical of this kind. Gingold is outrageously funny and Paul Ford as her husband, the Mayor of River City, is equally boisterous in a comic role. But it's Preston's show from start to finish with co-star Shirley Jones in fine vocal form as the skeptical librarian.
One of the most cleverly staged numbers is the "Marian, The Librarian" number that takes place in the town library where sliding poles and balconies become part of the intricately staged dance routine. All of the musical numbers are performed with professional charm by a talented group of actors/singers/dancers who are part of the River City citizenry.
Little Ron Howard, the boy with the lisp, who later went on to directorial fame, is a standout as Jones' little brother.
Summing up: Outstanding old-fashioned musical with its heart in the right place--Americana in the best tradition of the word.
Summing up: It has more charm than the law allows.

The Music Man [Blu-ray] Specifications
The Music Man was one of the last great movie musicals from any studio, and it proved to be that rarest of events: a Broadway show that was measurably improved by its transition to the screen. Robert Preston made his musical debut--both live and on film--as "Professor" Harold Hill, the upbeat charlatan who promises to teach a small-town boys band by the "think system." But it's the part Preston was born to play and the one for which he will always be best remembered. Composer Meredith Willson based The Music Man on his own small-town Midwestern boyhood, circa 1912, a quasi-mythical place where the old-maid librarian looks and sings like Shirley Jones. The boy himself is an adorable Ron Howard, lisp-singing "Gary, Indiana." Willson's entire score, featuring a combination of what are now standards, such as "Goodnight My Someone" and "Till There Was You" and show-specific numbers ("Trouble," "76 Trombones"), is never less than infectious. This dazzling special edition is also as bright and sunny as any 4th of July in Iowa could ever hope to be. --Robert Windeler

Wall-E (Three-Disc Special Edition + Digital Copy and BD Live) [Blu-ray]
Wall-E (Three-Disc Special Edition + Digital Copy and BD Live) [Blu-ray] Review
Wall-E,Disney's high grossing entry of 2008(released June/08),is a delightful look at our future(2805) whose protagonist just happens to be a little robotic trash compactor. On the surface it would seem to be something with only slight potential, but the magical folks at Pixar transform this seemingly mundane bot into something with feelings, something with dedication to his job and his charge(a cockroach!),endless determination and whose life we get caught up in and come to care about in short order. It is quite marvelous how it all unfolds.
The story takes place in 2805 and Earth is a deserted wasteland...waste,being the operative word. The entire population has long left earth(over a quarter of a million days ago!)and now lives on a huge spaceship;the Axiom.People, due largely to bone loss,no longer walk but fly around on hover chairs with their every whim and need catered to by a myriad of different bots.Every so many years the ship sends out probes to Earth to determine whether life has returned so THEY may return.
This is where our little rolling trash compactor by the name of Wall-E comes in.He lives in an old shipping-like container filled with many odds and ends he has collected over many years. He,along with his now non-functioning brethren, were left behind to clean up the Earth of all its' trash which forced the population to leave in the first place. He is still hard at it with a little cockroach for a companion when one of the Axioms life probes lands nearby. The ship comes and goes leaving behind a probe drone;think an egg with sleek wings! While the probe flits here and there seeking a sign of life Wall-E watches and falls in love. The probe isn't exactly discreet in its' search and is quick on the draw, disintegrating more than one object in its' way. This doesn't deter our love struck Wall-E however. When the probe(called Eve) finds life it shuts down, sends out an automatic beacon and is later picked up by the mother craft.Wall-E follows his lady love into space and back to the Axiom.
At the Axiom Eve delivers her precious cargo to the Captain but there is a conspiracy afoot. It seems an old message from the president relaying a message about Earth at one point being uninhabitable has been interpreted by the bots, who literally control just about every aspect of life aboard the ship now,as a directive to NEVER return. So they try and destroy the evidence.Between a love struck Wall-E trying to help his lady love and a now newly invigorated ships Captain who realizes they must go back, they eventually quash the robotic uprising and put the Axiom on a heading for Earth.
The story runs on many levels with its' obvious love story, its good against evil plot and a clear environmental message of how we must protect the Earth. The animation is visibly striking, rich in detail and life like;especially in scenes showing the vast wasteland that has become our planet.
Technically the film has been transferred beautifully and is in its original widescreen a/r.Extras abound in this three disc set and they include:A Digital copy,The Pixar Story,Deleted scenes, some "hilarious moments" from the movie,a look at the Buy N Large Corp,"Lots of Bots"which includes games, several making of featurettes,a close look at Wall-E's friends, two animated shorts:"Burn-E" and the theatrical short which accompanied the movie when first run,"Presto",audio commentary by the director,a tour of the universe by Wall-E and the sounds of Wall-E.It's an extra packed edition to be sure.
I do have one complaint about this three disc set however. The discs come in cardboard pull out sections;the left pull out has one disc in it(#1) and the right pull out has the other two discs, feathered over one another. When I saw this and started pulling them out to examine them I thought"Oh boy, here we go.I can see them all being scratched or scuffed".But I was pleasantly surprised to find they were fine. However taking them in and out(especially the 2nd and 3rd ones)I think will eventually cause scuffs. So for my own peace of mind I elected to put them into a separate double holding DVD snap case. This is positively awful thinking on Disney's part to be so cavalier in how they package these things.Of course it's more money for them if you have to get new ones.So beware my friends.
In conclusion this 3 DVD set of the Disney/Pixar 2008 smash Wall-E is a crowd pleaser from start to finish. The characters we see are fascinating to the nth degree and the plot moves at a good and steady pace. The animation by Pixar is top notch all the way through and is startlingly real especially in its' portrayal of Earth in the future. In this 3-disc set beware of the bad packaging that these discs are put into.If you can overcome this hurdle, sit back and relax and enjoy another wonderful adventure from the imaginative folks at Pixar studios.
Wall-E (Three-Disc Special Edition + Digital Copy and BD Live) [Blu-ray] Overview
The highly acclaimed director of Finding Nemo and the creative storytellers behind Cars and Ratatouille transport you to a galaxy not so far away for a new cosmic comedy adventure about a determined robot named Wall-E. After hundreds of lonely years of doing what he was built for, the curious and lovable Wall-E discovers a new purpose in life when he meets a sleek search robot named Eve. Join them and a hilarious cast of characters on a fantastic journey across the universe. Transport yourself to a fascinating new world with Disney-Pixar's latest adventure, now even more astonishing on DVD and loaded with bonus features, including the exclusive animated short film Burn-E. Wall-E is a film your family will want to enjoy over and over again.
Wall-E (Three-Disc Special Edition + Digital Copy and BD Live) [Blu-ray] Specifications
Pixar genius reigns in this funny romantic comedy, which stars a robot who says absolutely nothing for a full 25 minutes yet somehow completely transfixes and endears himself to the audience within the first few minutes of the film. As the last robot left on earth, Wall-E (voiced by Ben Burtt) is one small robot--with a big, big heart--who holds the future of earth and mankind squarely in the palm of his metal hand. He's outlasted all the "Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class" robots that were assigned some 700 years ago to clean up the environmental mess that man made of earth while man vacationed aboard the luxury spaceship Axiom. Wall-E has dutifully gone about his job compacting trash, the extreme solitude broken only by his pet cockroach, but he's developed some oddly human habits and ideas. When the Axiom sends its regularly scheduled robotic EVE probe (Elissa Knight) to earth, Wall-E is instantly smitten and proceeds to try to impress EVE with his collection of human memorabilia. EVE's directive compels her to bring Wall-E's newly collected plant sprout to the captain of the Axiom and Wall-E follows in hot pursuit. Suddenly, the human world is turned upside down and the Captain (Jeff Garlin) joins forces with Wall-E and a cast of other misfit robots to lead the now lethargic people back home to earth. Wall-E is a great family film with the most impressive aspect being the depth of emotion conveyed by a simple robot--a machine typically considered devoid of emotion, but made so absolutely touching by the magic of Pixar animation. Also well-worth admiring are the sweeping views from space, the creative yet disturbing vision of what strange luxuries a future space vacation might offer, and the innovative use of trash in a future cityscape. Underneath the slapstick comedy and touching love story is a poignant message about the folly of human greed and its potential effects on earth and the entire human race. Wall-E is preceded in theaters by the comical short Presto in which a magician's rabbit, unfed one too many times takes his revenge against the egotistical magician. Silence of the Lambs (W/Dvd) (Ws) [Blu-ray] Review
This is a great scary film with good acting from Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins.
this film won the 5 main oscars Best picture
Best director Johnathan Demme
Best screenplay
Best actor Anthony Hopkins
Best actress Jodie Foster
In conclusion this is one of my favorite film adaptions from a book.
this is about a woman redeaming herself. An FBI trainie named Clarice Starling [Foster] is scent by Jack Crawford [Scott Glenn] to study with an imprisoned phycopath called Hannibal Lecter [Hopkins] who gives her clues to solve the case on a serial killer known as Buffalo Bill [Ted Levine]. Who currently has kidnapped A senator's Daughter and Imprisoned her in a well. Then Crawford makes a faulse deal with Lecter a transfer to a prison eventualy senator Martin makes a real deal with the help of DR Chillton[Anthony Heald] who moves Lecter to Memphis with a profile on Bill and hot on his trail meanwhile Clarice finds clues ralated to buffalo bill.
Silence of the Lambs (W/Dvd) (Ws) [Blu-ray] Overview
Based on Thomas Harris's novel, this terrifying film by Jonathan Demme really only contains a couple of genuinely shocking moments (one involving an autopsy, the other a prison break). The rest of the film is a splatter-free visual and psychological descent into the hell of madness, redeemed astonishingly by an unlikely connection between a monster and a haunted young woman. Anthony Hopkins is extraordinary as the cannibalistic psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter, virtually entombed in a subterranean prison for the criminally insane. At the behest of the FBI, agent-in-training Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) approaches Lecter, requesting his insights into the identity and methods of a serial killer named Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine). In exchange, Lecter demands the right to penetrate Starling's most painful memories, creating a bizarre but palpable intimacy that liberates them both under separate but equally horrific circumstances. Demme, a filmmaker with a uniquely populist vision (Melvin and Howard, Something Wild), also spent his early years making pulp for Roger Corman (Caged Heat), and he hasn't forgotten the significance of tone, atmosphere, and the unsettling nature of a crudely effective close-up. Much of the film, in fact, consists of actors staring straight into the camera (usually from Clarice's point of view), making every bridge between one set of eyes to another seem terribly dangerous. --Tom Keogh

Shorts [Blu-ray]
Shorts [Blu-ray] Review
A fun kid flick from the SPY KIDS (et al) director. It's silly, goofy, fast-paced, visually bizarre, well-acted, and fun. It's as good as any kid flick out there, and better than lots (WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE? yuch.), but not in the same league as TOY STORY and their ilk.
I don't know why so many people over-criticize this movie. It ain't Fellini- it's a kids movie. It's *supposed* to be non-linear.
Lighten up. Enjoy it for what it is.

Shorts [Blu-ray] Specifications
A fantastical story, relayed in the form of short vignettes by director Robert Rodriguez, Shorts is the story of a magic wishing rock and kids' imaginations gone wild. The film plays a lot like the The Little Rascals (Our Gang) films from the 1920's-1940's: it's made up of short, comical episodes that focus on kids adventures and how imagination drives their play. When a magical rainbow rock falls from the sky and lands in the middle of tech-town Black Falls, a young boy Toe (Jimmy Bennett) discovers that the rock has the power to grant his every wish. The victim of constant bullying, Toe wishes for friends as unusual as himself and ends up with a posse of aliens who protect him while seriously complicating his life. As narrator, Toby quickly stops the film, explaining that his experience is really the middle of the story, and then rewinds repeatedly to relate various encounters between neighborhood kids and the magic rock. Each short is its own journey into a kid's imagination where wishes for everything from a treasure hunt, to a fortress guarded by crocodiles, a super smart baby with telepathic powers, and a booger monster grown from one boy's booger are immediately granted. These fantastical wishes wreak havoc on the entire Black Falls community: the children, the technology obsessed, disconnected Black Box employees, and the tyrannical Black Box boss Mr. Black (James Spader). In the end, the magic rock is a catalyst for change, encouraging kids and adults to work together and inspiring serious reflection regarding one's wishes, dreams, and goals. Rodriguez does a great job of portraying the wildness of kids' imaginations and viewers that delight in over-the-top ridiculousness and the overtly gross will laugh hysterically throughout the film. Unfortunately, those who demand restraint may find it overdone. (Ages 10 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Immortal [Blu-ray]
Immortal [Blu-ray] Review
I recommend this film for lovers of true science-fiction/futuristic tales-fans.The raw politics of a future society, mixed with a mythological timelessness, pushes one to accept and not querry the viewers conception the films purpose.
Immortal [Blu-ray] Overview
New York City, year 2095. A floating pyramid has emerged in the skies above Manhattan, inhabited by ancient Egyptian Gods. They have cast judgement down upon Horus (a falcon headed god), one of their own. With only seven days to preserve his immortality, he must find a human host body to inhabit, and search for a mate. In the city below, a beatiful young woman, Jill, with blue hair, blue tears and a power even unknown to her, wanders the city in search of her identity aided by a doctor who is fascinated by this mystery of nature. Reality in this world has a whole new meaning as bodies, voices and memories converge with Gods, mutants, mortals and extra terrestrials. Stunning visual effects meld with the poetic surrealism of comic-book creator Enki Bilal's fantastic epic story. A ground-breaking step into the future of film-making.
